The main vision problems of kindergarten children are astigmatism and farsightedness

From April 2023 to the present, the Party Branch of the Child Health Management Center of Hunan Provincial Children's Hospital has organized a special action called "Love Eye Care Doll Class" (vision screening for children aged 3-6) by creating the "Child Growth and Health Action" party building brand public welfare activity.

In this operation, medical staff gave up their daily rest time and used three professional children's binocular vision screening devices and a self-developed campus physical examination system to conduct early screening for 6,545 preschool children between the ages of 2 and 7 in 22 kindergartens in Changsha.

There were 5,259 boys and 1,286 girls. The screening scope covered 2,535 people in Wangcheng District, 2,069 people in Yuhua District, 759 people in Changsha County, 633 people in Tianxin District and 549 people in Kaifu District.

The age distribution of screening was as follows: 16 people aged 2-3 years, 344 people aged 3-4 years, 1718 people aged 4-5 years, 2063 people aged 5-6 years, and 2404 people aged 6 years and above. The center uses a vision screening platform to provide timely feedback on abnormal results and remind parents to pay attention to protecting their children's eye health.

The comprehensive screening data analysis showed that there were 593 cases with abnormal visual development (9.11%), including 478 boys (7.30% of the total number of screenings, accounting for 80.60% of the total number of detections) and 115 girls (accounting for 1.76% of the total number of screenings, accounting for 19.40% of the total number of detections).

The higher detection rate in boys may be related to the higher number of boys in kindergartens and the use of eye health behaviors in boys' lives. Among the types of visual abnormalities detected, 428 patients (72.18%) had astigmatism, 72 patients (12.14%) had problems with astigmatism or anisometropia, 46 patients (7.76%) had myopia, 20 patients (3.37%) had abnormal eye alignment, 20 patients had anisometropia (3.37%), and 7 patients had different pupil sizes (1.18%).

In terms of geographical distribution, there were 239 people in Wangcheng District (accounting for 9.43% of the number of participants in the district), 133 people in Yuhua District (accounting for 6.43% of the number of participants in the district), 97 people in Kaifu District (accounting for 17.67% of the number of participants in the district), 65 people in Tianxin District (accounting for 10.27% of the number of participants in the district), and 59 people in Changsha County (accounting for 7.77% of the number of participants in the district). In terms of age distribution, there were 28 people in the age group of 3-4 years, 127 people in the age group of 4-5 years old, 171 people in the age group of 5-6 years old, and 267 people in the age group of 6 years and above.

Protect children's eye health and achieve "three musts"

With the rise of digital lifestyles, children and adolescents face unprecedented threats to their vision. According to the monitoring data released by the National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention in March, the overall myopia rate of children and adolescents in mainland China will be 51.9% in 2022, and the situation of myopia in children and adolescents is grim.

The Hunan Provincial Children's Hospital's Child Health Management Center found that 10% of kindergarten children in kindergarten classes had vision problems after screening 6,545 kindergarten children over the past year. In addition, there are many children who are found to have vision problems in the nursery class, but parents have not taken their children to the hospital for medical treatment.

Li Qi, director of the Child Health Management Center, said that behind this situation is that parents do not have enough awareness of their children's vision health, and it is easy to miss the opportunity for early intervention.

He called for eye care and vision examinations for infants and young children to be carried out as soon as possible in order to further reduce the detection rate of abnormal vision, and to implement regular vision screening in kindergartens. It is also hoped that social forces can give attention and support to jointly promote children's vision protection and ensure the healthy growth of children.

"Many vision abnormalities are congenital, and children grow up unaware of their vision problems, and parents often don't notice them. In this regard, Cai Zili, deputy director and deputy chief physician of the Child Health Management Center, who participated in the screening organization, pointed out that for the vision problems of kindergarten children, especially astigmatism, farsightedness and myopia, parents should carry out vision monitoring and screening in time so as to detect and deal with vision problems as soon as possible. She recommends:

1. Have regular medical checkups. Parents should pay special attention to their children's annual health check-ups, according to the latest guidelines, from birth to 6 years old, at least 11 health check-ups at professional child health management centers, including vision monitoring and screening.

2. Soak up the sun. Children under 2 years old should avoid contact with electronic screens, and children aged 2-5 years old should not exceed half an hour of screen time a day, the less the better.

3. Intervene as early as possible. Parents should pay more attention to their children's eye posture in life, pay attention to their children's behavior and habits, and go to the ophthalmology department of a professional children's hospital for diagnosis and systematic intervention as soon as possible when they find that there are squinting, blinking, rubbing, frowning, tilting head, squinting, etc.
