Toronto homeowners have made a list of 18 fines, exploiting legal loopholes, and targeting new immigrants and international students!

With the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment now at $2,471, it's really getting harder and harder to find accommodations that are reasonably priced and don't have serious drawbacks or completely invade personal privacy.

Although living with roommates is one of the only options available to some renters, a trending post on Reddit reminds us why living with strangers can sometimes be a complete nightmare.

In the post, one prospective tenant explained that while they had recently found an affordable place to live in Toronto, the landlord had presented them with a long list of headaches.

Netizen r/SlumlordsCanada wrote: "This is a list of the rules that the landlord gave me when I went to check the apartment. It is an apartment with 3 rooms, and the landlord lives in one of the rooms but does not share the space with any tenants. This means that the landlord or his children do not share any kitchen or bathroom with the tenant. Each room has its own bathroom and kitchen. ”

But the list is packed with 18 rules and fines for violations.

The list first designates the time between 11:15 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. as quiet times.

"You can go home whenever you want, but don't knock or slam on the door, don't play music or talk, don't shower, cook or wash dishes after 11:15 p.m. If you don't return home, a monthly fee of $35 CAD will be charged. Please follow this rule. The landlord wrote.

Talking about household tasks, the landlord explained that each tenant conducts their own household cleaning tasks on designated areas, such as bathrooms, hallways, or kitchens, on a monthly schedule, noting that "failure to follow this rule may result in an additional $35 in rent." ”

Landlords also ask tenants to stay in the kitchen while cooking and not leave while the stove or oven is on, or they "may be evicted."

The living space also has a strict one-guest per room policy, and guests are not allowed to stay overnight (at least without written permission).

The landlord went on to list a list of other confusing rules, including banning the use of gym equipment, smoking, incense, and burning candles, among others

If a tenant forgets to lock all exterior doors, it can result in an additional $35 per month for the tenant.

The list also stipulates that tenants can only shower once a day for no more than 15 minutes in total, spend a maximum of 60 minutes in the kitchen, and have no hot water for washing dishes.

The landlord also wrote: "The owner has the right to inspect or show your room with 24 hours' notice. ”

As expected, dozens of Reddit users gathered in the comments section to discuss the list.

"That's what I'm living with. Trust me, the rules don't end there. Whoever rents this place must be prepared to be micromanaged to death. I mean, how else could '15 minutes in the shower and 60 minutes in the kitchen' be enforced with essentially no stalker behavior?" asked netizen mybluntside.

"Also, I find it interesting that Rule 7 states that you only accept "boarder" status, not "tenant", even if it is explained in the detailed description that it was you who visited the place, and you are not actually sharing a kitchen/bathroom with the landlord. That is, legally, you are a tenant. ”

"Some of them are just common courtesy. I think when I write it like this, it seems very overwhelming. Apparently he had a bad experience. However, it is ridiculous to limit the time and duration of bathing," said another user.

I'm willing to bet that his target "tenants" are newcomers and international students who don't understand LTB laws or even question his rules. One user replied.
