Those common oral health care "pits" (3)

Friends who have read the article in the last magazine should know that the teeth that should be washed must be washed, and there must be no ambiguity. On the other hand, since teeth cleaning is so important and so powerful - even dental calculus is not a problem, is it possible that when we usually brush our teeth, we can "lie flat" a little?

To prevent dental disease, self-care is more important

To maintain oral health, there is no doubt that scientific and appropriate health care measures are necessary. Among them, brushing, rinsing, flossing, etc. are all self-care, while teeth cleaning is professional health care.

While professional health care is often more effective than self-care, there is no doubt that professional health care cannot be carried out as a daily health care modality.

The current recommended frequency of scaling is semi-annual to once a year. In such a long time interval, if you can't insist on perfect self-care, it is tantamount to "raising a tiger for trouble".

In fact, self-care is a very, very critical part of disease prevention, treatment and recovery. Everyone is primarily responsible for their own physical health, including dental health. Based on this, many periodontitis patients receive the first advice from the doctor after visiting the doctor is to learn to brush their teeth first! and even the dental practice in some areas requires the dentist to start formal periodontal treatment only after the patient has really mastered the brushing skills. This shows how important it is to master self-care skills.

Self-care measures also have priorities

As mentioned earlier, there are many self-care measures, including but not limited to brushing, rinsing, and flossing.

First of all, brushing your teeth is the most basic self-care measure, but there are still many people who can't do it well. The reason for this is nothing more than a negative attitude, slackness, or not mastering the correct brushing skills.

Although there are many ways to brush your teeth from a professional point of view, there are two main methods recommended on a daily basis, namely the modified BASS brushing method and the circular brushing method. The former is suitable for adults, especially periodontitis, while the latter is mainly used in children.

The main movements of the modified BASS brushing method are horizontal fluttering (at the junction of the teeth and gingiva) and brushing (lips/cheeks and tongue/palate of the teeth), while the main movements of the circular brushing method are to draw arcs on the lips/cheeks and tongue/palate/surface of the teeth, which has the advantage of being easy for children to master.

Secondly, flossing is a beneficial and necessary complement to brushing, and it is mainly responsible for cleaning the areas that the toothbrush can't reach, the adjacent areas of the teeth, and should also be used as a daily self-care measure. Unfortunately, because flossing is harder than brushing, many people have so far "shunned" flossing. The essentials of flossing are not complicated, mainly to complete the two actions of "slipping" (entering between the teeth) and "scraping" (cleaning the adjacent surfaces of the teeth).

In addition, gargling (here only refers to the use of mouthwash) is not recommended as a daily health care measure, for the following two reasons: first, for people with oral health, mouthwash itself is not essential, brushing and flossing can fully meet daily health care needs;

Although it can reduce the inflammation of the gums to a certain extent, its ability to remove plaque is relatively limited, and it should still be used as an adjunct to brushing and flossing. In other words, if you don't brush and floss your teeth properly, relying on a dental irrigator alone will not solve the problem of plaque control at the root.

The use of electric toothbrushes is a controversial topic. The author believes that the premise of proper brushing must be to learn how to brush your teeth. Although the high cleaning efficiency of an electric toothbrush can make up for the lack of brushing to a certain extent, if you can't brush your teeth, many hygienic dead spots will not be eliminated by the blessing of an electric toothbrush. After all, electric toothbrushes have a limited ability to change the position and direction of the bristles, so it's more reliable to adjust the bristles manually.
