The iPhone 16 has not been assembled yet, and Apple seems to be already ordering accessories for the iPhone 17 series~

According to the Economic Daily, Apple has ordered a large number of capacitive button components from Taiwanese suppliers that will supposedly be used in the upcoming iPhone 16 series or next year's iPhone 17 series.

The iPhone will completely eliminate the physical buttons!

According to the report, ASE Investment Control Semiconductors won the order, which includes system package (SIP) modules that will be used to integrate capacitive components with two haptic engine motors, one on each side of the iPhone.

Apple will replace the existing physical buttons on both sides of the iPhone 15 with a capacitive version, which will provide haptic feedback to iPhone 16 users. The latter type of button is able to detect pressure and simulate the pressure sensation of a physical button by generating vibrations through a haptic (or Taptic) engine, similar to the pressure-sensitive Home button on models like the iPhone 7/8/SE2.

As early as last year, it was revealed that the iPhone 15 would be switched to a new capacitive button design, which was later canceled due to technical difficulties that could not be solved. And with this year's iPhone 16, there are similar rumors.

What is certain, though, is that Apple has ordered these buttons from ASE Investment Control in preparation for future production plans. Whether it will be used in the iPhone 16 series is still unknown.

According to the report, Apple needs at least two system-in-package modules to integrate related components such as capacitive buttons and Taptic Engine motors to remove physical buttons such as the volume buttons and power buttons that have been used for years in the iPhone. The relevant system-in-package modules are exclusively undertaken by ASE Investment Control.

However, at this point in time, the design of the iPhone 16 series has already been finalized, and it is more likely that it will be equipped with fully mechanical buttons.

Also, a "capture button" that Apple will add on all iPhone 16 models should also be mechanical and not capacitive, but it will be able to respond to pressure and touch.

Including the report also mentioned that the capacitive components will enter the mass production stage in the third quarter of this year, which is unusually late compared to Apple's typical initial production run of the iPhone, so the order is likely to be for next year's iPhone 17 series, not the upcoming iPhone 16 models this year.

At present, the American version of the iPhone series has eliminated the physical card slot, using the eSIM card design, and it is not impossible to completely eliminate the physical buttons on the iPhone 17 Pro.
