Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a report on the revenue of mainland telecommunications business in the first quarter. The report shows that in the first quarter, the overall operation of the communications industry was stable. Telecom business revenue has risen steadily, cloud computing and other emerging services have played a greater driving role, the construction of new infrastructure such as 5G and gigabit optical networks has been continuously promoted, and the scale of network connection users has continued to expand, and the total revenue of telecommunications services in mainland China has increased by 13.4% year-on-year.

Overall operation

Telecom business revenue increased steadily. In the first quarter, the total revenue of telecommunications business reached 443.7 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%, and the growth rate increased by 0.2 percentage points from January to February. The total volume of telecommunication services at constant prices in the previous year increased by 13.4% year-on-year.

Revenue from fixed Internet broadband business grew steadily. In the first quarter, the three basic telecommunications companies completed Internet broadband business revenue of 66.19 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.1%, accounting for 14.9% of telecom business revenue, accounting for an increase of 0.1 percentage points year-on-year, driving the growth of telecom business revenue by 0.9 percentage points.

Mobile data traffic revenue fell slightly. In the first quarter, the three basic telecommunications companies completed mobile data traffic business revenue of 159.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%, accounting for 36% of telecom business revenue.

Double-digit growth in emerging business revenue. In the first quarter, the three basic telecommunications companies actively developed emerging businesses such as IPTV, Internet data centers, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, and achieved a total business income of 117.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.2%, accounting for 26.5% of the telecommunications business revenue, driving the growth of telecommunication business revenue by 3 percentage points. Among them, cloud computing and big data revenue increased by 17.4% and 37.3% year-on-year, respectively, and Internet of Things business revenue increased by 14.3% year-on-year.

Voice business revenue continued to decline. In the first quarter, the three basic telecom companies completed fixed voice and mobile voice business revenue of 4.47 billion yuan and 26.7 billion yuan, down 6.3% and 4.5% year-on-year respectively, accounting for 7% of telecom business revenue, accounting for 0.7 percentage points year-on-year.

Development of telecommunications users

The number of fixed broadband access users has grown steadily, and the number of gigabit users has continued to expand. As of the end of March, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users of the three basic telecommunications enterprises reached 647 million, a net increase of 10.89 million from the end of the previous year. Among them, there were 612 million fixed Internet broadband access users with access rates of 100 Mbps and above, accounting for 94.5% of the total number of users, and 177 million fixed Internet broadband access users with access rates of 1,000 Mbps and above, a net increase of 14.1 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 27.4% of the total number of users, an increase of 1.7 percentage points from the end of the previous year.

The scale of mobile phone users has increased steadily, with 5G users accounting for nearly half of the total. As of the end of March, the total number of mobile phone subscribers of the three basic telecommunications companies and China Radio and Television reached 1.755 billion, a net increase of 11.24 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 874 million, a net increase of 51.57 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 49.8% of mobile phone users, an increase of 3.2 percentage points compared with the end of the previous year.

Cellular IoT users are growing rapidly, and IPTV (Internet Television) users are increasing steadily. As of the end of March, the three basic telecommunications companies had developed 2.414 billion cellular IoT end users, a net increase of 81.35 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 57.9% of the number of mobile network terminal connections (including mobile phone users and cellular IoT end users). The total number of IPTV subscribers reached 407 million, a net increase of 5.513 million over the end of the previous year.

Telecom service usage

Mobile Internet traffic grew rapidly, and the DOU value rebounded to a high level in March. In the first quarter, the cumulative mobile Internet traffic reached 76.38 billion GB, a year-on-year increase of 14.3%, and the growth rate increased by 0.7 percentage points year-on-year. As of the end of March, the number of mobile Internet users reached 1.533 billion, a net increase of 8.381 million over the end of the previous year. In March, the average mobile Internet access traffic (DOU) per household reached 18.08 GB/user-month, a year-on-year increase of 6.7%, and an increase of 1.13GB/user-month over the same period last year.

The volume of mobile phone calls and text messages declined, and the revenue of mobile SMS business increased slightly. In the first quarter, the duration of outbound calls on mobile phones reached 527.1 billion minutes, down 4.9% year-on-year, and the duration of calls on fixed phones reached 17.76 billion minutes, down 5.6% year-on-year. In the first quarter, the volume of mobile SMS business decreased by 0.9% year-on-year, and the revenue of mobile SMS business increased by 5% year-on-year.

Communication capability

The total length of fiber optic cable lines has steadily increased. As of the end of March, the total length of optical cable lines in the country reached 65.58 million kilometers, a net increase of 1.26 million kilometers over the end of the previous year. Among them, access network optical cables, local network relay optical cables and long-distance optical cable lines accounted for 62.4%, 35.8% and 1.8% respectively, and the proportion of local network relay optical cables increased by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year.

The construction of gigabit fiber broadband network is progressing steadily. As of the end of March, the number of Internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.153 billion, a net increase of 17.32 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of optical fiber access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.113 billion, a net increase of 18.69 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 96.5% of the Internet broadband access ports. As of the end of March, the number of 10G PON ports with gigabit network service capabilities reached 24.56 million, a net increase of 1.536 million from the end of the previous year.

5G base stations account for more than one-third of the total. As of the end of March, the total number of mobile phone base stations in mainland China reached 11.9 million, a net increase of 281,000 over the end of the previous year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations reached 3.647 million, a net increase of 270,000 over the end of the previous year, accounting for 30.6% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared with January and February.

Regional developments

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has developed rapidly in gigabit users. As of the end of March, the penetration rates of fixed broadband access users of 1,000 Mbps and above in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions were 28.6%, 27.6%, 27.3% and 18.4%, respectively. The penetration rates of broadband access users with access rates of 1,000 Mbps and above in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta region were 29.8% and 27.1% respectively, an increase of 1.2 and 0.7 percentage points respectively from January to February.

All regions are actively promoting the construction and application of 5G. As of the end of March, the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions of 5G base stations reached 1.647 million, 807,000, 974,000 and 220,000 respectively, accounting for 31.9%, 31.3%, 28.7% and 28.6% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region, and 5G mobile phone users reached 381.49 million, 206.9 million, 227.12 million and 58.03 million respectively, accounting for 50.2%, 50.3% and 49.2% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region respectively. 47.4%。 As of the end of March, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta region reached 346,000 and 721,000 5G base stations respectively, accounting for 33.2% and 32.6% of the total number of mobile phone base stations in the region, and 5G mobile phone users reached 73.98 million and 158.94 million respectively, accounting for 49.7% of the total number of mobile phone users in the region.

Northeast China leads the growth rate of mobile Internet access traffic. In the first quarter, mobile Internet access traffic in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions reached 32.26 billion GB, 17.95 billion GB, 22.12 billion GB and 4.05 billion GB, respectively, up 10.4%, 19.8%, 14.7% and 21% year-on-year. Mobile Internet access traffic in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Delta reached 5.71 billion GB and 13.31 billion GB, respectively, a year-on-year increase of 15.8% and 7.7%. In the eight provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, Hainan, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Hunan and Guizhou, the average mobile Internet access traffic (DOU) per household exceeded 20 GB per household per month in March, and the difference between the highest and lowest DOU values in each province was 16 GB per household per month, an increase of 0.6 GB per household per month over the same period last year.
