How are people reading in 2023?

The overall reading rate is steadily rising! Digital reading is the key

In 2023, the comprehensive reading rate of mainland adult citizens in various media, including books, newspapers, periodicals and digital publications, will be 81.9%, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from 81.8% in 2022.

The book reading rate was 59.8%, unchanged from 59.8% in 2022;

The newspaper reading rate was 23.1%, down 0.4 percentage points from 23.5% in 2022;

The journal reading rate was 17.5%, down 0.2 percentage points from 17.7% in 2022.

The contact rate of digital reading methods (online reading on computer, mobile phone, e-reader, iPad, etc.) was 80.3%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from 80.1% in 2022.

The average number of paper books read per capita is 4.75, and it is 23.38 minutes per day!

In 2023, the per capita reading of paper books by mainland adults will be 4.75, slightly lower than the 4.78 books in 2022.

The average person reads paper books for 23.38 minutes per day, an increase of 0.25 minutes from 23.13 minutes in 2022.

Although the number of paper books read per capita is lower than the 4.78 books read in 2022, the reading time has increased, compared to 21.05 minutes per person per day in 2021, which is a significant increase.

The average number of paper newspapers read per capita was 13.34 issues, a decrease of 1.42 issues (copies) from 14.76 issues (copies) in 2022. The average number of paper journals read per capita was 1.89 issues, slightly higher than the 1.88 issues in 2022. The average daily reading time of books and newspapers was 31.47 minutes.

E-books, mobile phones, ...... Digital reading is deeply rooted in life

In 2023, the average number of e-books read by mainland adults will be 3.40, up from 3.33 in 2022. 12.3% read 10 or more paper books per year, and 9.9% read 10 or more e-books per year. Nearly 1 in 10 people read more than 10 e-books a year.

Mobile phone, computer, etc

In 2023, 78.3% of adult citizens read on mobile phones, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 77.8% in 2022.

70.6% of the adult citizens read online through computers, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from 71.5% in 2022, and 25.3% of the adult citizens read on e-readers, a decrease of 1.5 percentage points from 26.8% in 2022.

22.5% of adult citizens use iPads (tablets) for reading, an increase of 1.2 percentage points from 21.3% in 2022.

4.4% of adult citizens read through video lectures.

More than one-third of the people "listen to books", and video storytelling is popular

An investigation of the listening habits of adult citizens found that more than one-third of the mainland's citizens had the habit of listening to books in 2023. In terms of the listening situation of adult citizens, 36.3% of adult citizens said that they would read by listening to books in 2023, up from 35.5% in 2022. Thereinto:

23.4% of people use the "mobile audio app platform" to listen to books;

14.1% of people choose to listen to books through "WeChat official account or mini program";

9.5% of people choose to listen to books through "smart speakers";

7.8% and 6.1% of people chose to listen to books through "radio" and "audio readers or audio readers", respectively.

Among the minors aged 0-17, 33.1% said that they had read by listening to books in the past year.

Have you been staring at the electronic display screen for more time than the Chinese average?

Among the digital media, the average adult citizen spends the most time on mobile phones per day.

In 2023, the average daily mobile phone contact time of mainland adult citizens will be 106.52 minutes, an increase of 1.29 minutes from 105.23 minutes in 2022.

The average daily reading time per capita was 65.14 minutes through the computer network, a decrease of 1.44 minutes from 66.58 minutes in 2022.

The average daily reading time of e-readers is 10.33 minutes, slightly lower than the 10.65 minutes in 2022;

The average person spends 9.11 minutes reading on iPads (tablets) per day, up from 8.79 minutes in 2022.

The average person spends more than three hours a day reading all kinds of numbers.

Book Month, Book Market...... People are getting more engaged

In 2023, 74.1% of mainland adults will be aware of the national reading brand campaign, an increase of 0.4 percentage points from 73.7% in 2022. "Local Reading Month" has the greatest influence, and the proportion of "local characteristic reading festivals (such as college students' reading festivals, institutional reading festivals, etc.)", "local large-scale book fairs, book market activities" and "urban reading lecture halls" is relatively high.

Public libraries have the highest level of user satisfaction

In 2023, 53.4% of adult urban residents in mainland China were aware of the existence of at least one public reading service facility, such as a public library, community reading room/community bookstore/urban library, newspaper and periodical columns, bookstores, and picture book libraries, near the streets where they live, an increase of 0.9 percentage points from 52.5% in 2022. Among them, more than 42.8% of urban residents said that there was a bookstore near the street where they lived, and 31.6% said that there was a public library near the street where they lived.

From the perspective of the use of various public reading service facilities, among the adult urban residents in mainland China in 2023:

More than one-third (35.9%) said they had used a bookstore;

15.5% said they had used a public library;

13.2% and 10.7% of the respondents reported that they had used the Community Reading Room/Community Book House/City Study Room and newspaper columns, respectively.

Another 4.8% said that they had used a picture book museum.

Among the urban adult residents who have used the above public reading service facilities, the satisfaction of public libraries is the highest.

The reading rate of children aged 9-13 is close to 100%.

In 2023, the reading rate of minors aged 0-17 in mainland China will be 86.2%, an increase of 2.0 percentage points from 84.2% in 2022. The contact rate of digital reading methods was 74.7%, an increase of 1.3 percentage points from 73.4% in 2022. The number of books read per capita was 11.39, an increase of 0.25 from 11.14 in 2022. Read paper books for 35.69 minutes a day.

In 2023, 73.8% of children aged 0-8 will read books, 99.4% will read books for children aged 9-13, and 90.7% will read books for children aged 14-17.

From the perspective of the number of books read by minors, adolescents aged 14-17 read the most extracurricular books per capita, with a relatively large increase over the previous year.

In 2023, 13.71 extracurricular books will be read by teenagers aged 14-17 in mainland China, 10.71 books per child aged 0-8, and 10.43 books per child aged 9-13.

When did the National Reading Survey begin?

Since 1999, the National Reading Survey organized and implemented by the China Academy of Press and Publication has been carried out 21 times.

The 21st National Reading Survey was launched in August 2023 and collected samples from 173 cities across the country, covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, with a total of 1.58 million samples recovered, of which 74.9% were samples of adults aged 18 and above, 25.1% of the total samples were samples of minors aged 0-17, and the ratio of urban and rural samples was 3.6:1. According to the survey, the mainland population is 1.329 billion, of which 57.2% are urban residents and 42.8% are rural residents.
