Dong Wenyuan, a professor at Southwest Forestry University, has been committed to the research, scientific and technological teaching and poverty alleviation of rare and endangered plants for 31 years, and has explored and summarized key technologies such as the transformation of natural forests and the cultivation of plantations.
In Xisha Village, Mujiao Town, a wooden structure with local characteristics has been renovated into the "Daguan Xiaozhu Science and Technology Courtyard", which is the place where Professor Dong Wenyuan lived for more than 10 years when he was first engaged in the research of Xiaozhu, and the brown and yellow wooden wall shows the whole process of Dong Wenyuan's research on Xiaozhu in Daguan County for more than 30 years. Here, the author met Dong Wenyuan, who is known as "Professor Xiaozhu" by the local people, and now at the age of 62, he is still in good spirits, and his eyes are still permeated with shrewdness and wisdom.
In 1993, Dong Wenyuan, who was in his first year, was selected by Southwest Forestry College (the predecessor of the current Southwest Forestry University) to Daguan County as the deputy county magistrate of science and technology. The current situation of poverty and backwardness in the local area has inspired him to use what he has learned to find a path suitable for local development. During his research in Mupole Town, Dong Wenyuan had the opportunity to get acquainted with Xiaozhu, which is commonly known as Luohan bamboo by the locals.
Dong Wenyuan consulted all the information about the bamboo and learned that although it has outstanding ecological and economic advantages, there is still a gap in the research on its biology, ecology and cultivation mechanism. In order to find out the growth habits and distribution and development of bamboo, Dong Wenyuan began a journey of looking for bamboo over mountains and mountains, eating and sleeping in the open, and dreamed of "bamboo".
At the beginning of the research, Dong Wenyuan had no scientific research funds, and the field investigation was all supported by his meager salary, he ate and lived in the mountains, drank mountain spring water when he was thirsty, and burned potatoes to satisfy his hunger when he was hungry......
Starting from scratch, Dong Wenyuan has presided over and completed more than 10 scientific research projects such as the China-Europe Biodiversity Conservation Project (ECBP) "Research on Biodiversity Conservation Technology and Demonstration Base Construction of Natural Bamboo Forests", and the National Forestry Public Welfare Industry Scientific Research Project "Research on Conservation and Restoration Technology of Rare and Endangered Bamboo Forests". He has published more than 30 papers, 8 national project identification achievements, 1 national invention patent, and 1 local standard, which has filled the gap in the research of bamboo and laid the theoretical and practical foundation for the protection, cultivation and industrialization of bamboo resources in Daguan County, and enhanced the cultural confidence, scientific and technological confidence, talent confidence and resource confidence of the development of bamboo industry in Daguan County.
Dong Wenyuan introduced: "For more than 30 years, we have cooperated deeply with Daguan County in the study of the ecological characteristics and cultivation mechanism of bamboo, and after the completion of basic research, we have developed to applied research, and we have also made breakthroughs in biodiversity conservation, improved seed selection, container seedling, and ecologically efficient cultivation technology." ”
With the implementation of Professor Dong Wenyuan's scientific and technological achievements, Daguan's bamboo industry has gradually developed and achieved a leap in quantity and quality. In November 2018, Daguan County was awarded the title of "Hometown of Chinese Bamboo Shoots" by the Chinese Forestry Society, becoming the first county in the country to promote the industrialization of this rare and protected bamboo species, successively applying for the certification of 364,000 acres of organic bamboo shoot bases, "Daguan Xiao Bamboo Shoots" was certified by the National Geographical Indication Product, and has the only "one county, one industry" bamboo shoot industry characteristic county in Yunnan Province, the only bamboo shoot green food industry base county and many other laurels.
Since 2017, Dong Wenyuan has led the team to provide technology and patents for Daguan County free of charge in various ways such as substitute training, on-site training, and door-to-door guidance, carried out 92 training sessions, trained more than 20,000 bamboo farmers, selected and trained 186 local talents in the bamboo industry, and left a technical team that will never leave for rural revitalization 31, with an area of 8,600 acres, 10 "science and technology bamboo parks" and 4 "science and technology courtyards" led by new business entities have been built, forming a network system of scientific and technological services and talent training, and transforming the research results of Xiaozhu into a grid, organized and sustainable transformation into farmers' ability to get rich.
Seeing that the bamboo in Dong Wenyuan's base has improved its quality and increased its efficiency, the villagers have come to learn from him the planting and management techniques of the bamboo. In this way, driven by his demonstration, the villagers of ten miles and eight townships have planted bamboo, and have achieved poverty alleviation, income increase, development and prosperity. With the efficient use of bamboo shoots and bamboo, the output value of bamboo is increasing exponentially.
"After the technical guidance of Mr. Dong in our cooperatives over the years, the quality of seedlings, planting, bamboo shoots and bamboo materials has improved greatly, and the income has increased year by year. Up to now, Daguan County has 208,300 acres of natural bamboo forests and 810,000 acres of artificial bamboo forests, accounting for more than 70% of the total bamboo resources in the world, and a total of 173,000 people share the dividends of the bamboo industry. In 2023, the county's bamboo shoot output will be 38,900 tons, with a total output value of nearly 2 billion yuan. The per capita annual income of bamboo shoots is more than 8,000 yuan, and the highest is more than 50,000 yuan.

In 2018, he was awarded the National Advanced Individual in Targeted Poverty Alleviation with Science and Technology, in 2018 and 2019, he was continuously commended as an advanced worker in poverty alleviation in Yunnan Province, in 2021, he was commended as the 23rd Advanced Worker in Yunnan Province, in 2022, he was awarded the title of "The Most Beautiful Forestry and Grass Science and Technology Promoter" by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and in 2023, he was awarded the honorary title of "The Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker" in Zhaotong City.
