The resolution, which was intended to admit Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, was ultimately failed due to a veto by the United States. It is understood that Palestine is still a "permanent observer state" of the United Nations and enjoys the status of participating in all the activities of the organization, except that it cannot vote on draft resolutions and decisions in its principal organs and organs. Palestine had submitted an application to the United Nations for membership since 2011, but it was not approved at that time. Now, 13 years later, Palestine's desire to become a full member of the United Nations is still frustrated, and it is clear that the United States and Israel have been stumbling behind it for more than a decade.
What is the reason why the United States rejects Palestine as a full member of the United Nations? According to the United States, the Palestinian state does not yet have the ability to govern the country, and even the United States has questioned whether Palestine meets the membership status stipulated in the UN Charter, implying that whether Palestine is "peace-loving" is still a question. In response to these two reasons of the US side, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations and ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, directly criticized the United States by name in his explanatory remarks. Ambassador Fu Cong first pointed out that China is very disappointed by the US veto. Against the backdrop of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it is more urgent than ever to admit Palestine as a full Member of the United Nations. By admitting the United Nations as a full Member State, Palestine would be able to enjoy its equal status with Israel, which would certainly help to create conditions for the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. In this regard, Ambassador Fu Cong stressed at the Security Council that all countries that sincerely support the two-state solution should not oppose Palestine's formal accession to the United Nations. However, the US veto once again shows that as the biggest supporter behind Israel, its position has long been the same as Israel's, and it has become more and more explicit in rejecting the "two-state solution." As the world's largest power and one of the "five permanent members" of the Security Council, the United States should really listen to the voice of the international community, and as a member of the United Nations, together with other member states, fulfill its international responsibilities, support Resolution 2728, and achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.
