Ningxia Helan stone is used to make inkstones, known as "Shuofang treasure". Helan inkstone has the characteristics of easy ink without damage, and the remaining ink is covered without drying or mildew for many days and maintaining the ink color. In 2011, Ningxia Helan inkstone production skills were recorded in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Walking into Yinchuan Cultural City, under the antique building, an old man with silver hair "jingled" in the sun, carving a piece of Helan stone, he is Yan Linlin, a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor who has studied Helan inkstone carving skills for more than 50 years.
Yan Linlin was born in a family of inkstones, and his ancestors began to engage in inkstone making during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. In 1973, he entered the Helan Stone Carving Factory in Yinchuan City and studied Helan stone carving skills from his father Yan Zijiang.
In order to create a beautiful inkstone, Yan Linlin tried his best to learn art, calligraphy, carving and other knowledge through various channels to improve his inkstone making skills.
Yan Forest said that inkstone makers must not only have excellent skills, but also have profound cultural accomplishments, so as to internalize in their hearts and externalize them in their actions when carving. Only by being calm and calm can we concentrate on meticulous craftsmanship and produce excellent works.
Walking into Yan Forest's studio, Helan inkstones with different themes and shapes are displayed in it, showing the beauty of nature and art in every square inch.
Yan Forest said that the two colors of Helan stone brown purple and bean green cover each other, and are often accompanied by natural patterns such as jade belts, cloud patterns, eyebrows, stone eyes, and silver lines. One side of Helan inkstone, to go through the phase stone selection, design, inkstone, preliminary carving, fine carving, polishing, glazing and other processes, will appear in front of the user's eyes. When making, it is necessary to make the stone inkstone, follow the nature, explore the connotation, and design and carve it according to the shape and color of the stone.
Over the years, Yan Forest has insisted on hand-making inkstones, mainly carved with beautiful colors, and designed a variety of characteristic Helan inkstones such as moonlight on the lotus pond and a hundred schools of thought, forming a simple and subtle style with vivid charm in the carving inheritance.
Yan Forest poured his life's work into the production, inheritance and promotion of Helan inkstone. He opened the course of Helan inkstone making skills to colleges and universities, and taught more people to learn the carving skills of Helan inkstone.
