For many people, everything is so new and perfect when they have just moved into a new house.
But as time goes by, those "ideas" in renovation begin to show their fox tails, and you have to face reality: some things are really just useless.
Today, this list I'm going to share is a lesson I learned first-hand in my first home, if you're planning your second home, or just want to give your home a makeover, then these pitfalls, take a good look, you can completely avoid them.
1. Do not install matte bricks
When I renovated for the first time, I was also fascinated by the high-end sense of matte bricks, thinking that this brick surface is smooth and delicate, the color is soft, and it is so classy. But it didn't take long for me to find out the problem.
First of all, the surface of the matte brick is simply a stain collector. A little bit of dust and water stains can leave traces on it, which is especially obvious. Especially in the kitchen and bathroom, where it is easy to get dirty, matte tiles are a nightmare.
Besides, the reflectivity of matte bricks is not good, and the house always looks dark and not bright enough. Home is a place to relax, and the mood is heavy when you face the dark ground all day long.
Finally, the abrasion resistance of matte bricks is also an issue. There are more walks around the house, and scratches are easy to appear on the brick surface, and as time goes by, those marks become more and more obvious, and the beauty is greatly reduced.
2. Do not install a suspended TV cabinet
When I first started looking at the design of the suspended TV cabinet, I thought that this thing is quite modern and can save space, how nice it is. As a result, I found out that it was all about asking for trouble.
The TV cabinet hangs in mid-air, and its stability depends on the support of those few screws and the wall. Over time, the screws may loosen and the supports may become deformed.
Sometimes, if you accidentally touch it, the TV cabinet will start to sway, and I will panic in my heart, for fear that one day it will suddenly fall.
Secondly, don't look at the suspended TV cabinet to save space, but in fact, it has particularly high requirements for the layout of the wires. The wires have to be well hidden, otherwise the clumps of wires will be exposed, and it will be called an ugly one.
3. Do not install invisible drying racks
When it comes to invisible drying racks, I really have a lot to say. When this thing was first installed, it looked quite foreign, the wall was flat and neat, and it didn't take up space at all, so it felt quite space-saving. But when it comes to using it, it's hard to put into words.
First of all, the installation of invisible drying racks is a big project. You have to find a professional master to measure the size, positioning, installation, a little carelessness, it may lead to the shelf is not stable, the use of shaky, the heart of the bottomless.
And, once it's installed, it's a lot of effort to adjust the position or disassemble it.
The durability of invisible drying racks is also an issue.
This thing often has to be retracted, and those mechanical parts are easy to wear out and may need to be repaired or replaced in a short time.
Moreover, once you encounter wet weather, there are more clothes to dry, and the moisture on the shelves is not easy to dry, and it may rust after a long time.
4. Do not install a half-wall bathroom
The first time I renovated it, I thought the design of the half-wall bathroom was very fashionable, and the sense of space was also strong, and it looked transparent and bright. But after I lived there for a year, I realized the inconvenience behind it.
First, there is the issue of privacy. A half-wall design means that your bathroom is only half partitioned, which can be awkward in practice, especially when guests come to your home. I washed inside, and the people outside walked around, and my heart was not steady.
Moreover, the sound insulation effect is not good, and the sound of water is easy to transmit to the living room, and it also affects others to watch TV.
Secondly, because of the large wall opening, the water vapor is more likely to spread to other areas, and the risk of moisture on the wall and furniture increases.
And over time, after things are placed, the table is very messy, and it can be seen at a glance, which affects the image of the home.
5. Do not install glass cabinet doors
I started using glass doors because I wanted to show off my beautiful tableware, collectibles, and face.
But I didn't expect it to be particularly prone to fingerprints and dust. Every time I opened the cabinet door, the grease and dust on my hands were printed on the glass, and it was clearly visible.
The key is that it is also troublesome to clean, you have to use a special glass cleaner, and you have to wipe it carefully for fear of leaving scratches.
In this way, you have to take the time to take care of it often, otherwise the glass door will become a stain on the home.
The security of glass doors is also an issue.
If you have children or pets at home, running around and accidentally hitting the glass door, it is a safety hazard.
In addition, once the glass door is hit or the temperature changes too much, it may burst, which is a safety issue that cannot be ignored.
6. Do not install a large coffee table in the living room
The big coffee table, although it looks magnificent, but the practicality is really not very good.
First of all, the large coffee table really takes up space. The living room was supposed to be a place to relax, and everyone moved around freely, but as soon as a large coffee table was placed there, the activity space immediately shrank.
Especially if there are children at home, running around, it is easy to bump into the coffee table, and the potential safety hazards cannot be ignored.
And the storage function of the large coffee table is actually quite limited.
You may think that you can put a lot of things now, but in fact, the little space under the coffee table can't put much of it, and it's not easy to access.
Many times, things on the coffee table pile up more and more, and eventually it becomes a pile of clutter.
7. Do not install a door to the top wardrobe
The door-to-top design sounds appealing, after all, it looks neat and atmospheric. But in fact, this kind of wardrobe has a lot of problems to use.
First of all, the door panel is so high, and after a long time, it is affected by gravity and is easy to deform. Once deformed, the door will not be easy to open, and if it is not closed tightly, the clothes in the wardrobe will get wet.
Besides, a door-to-top wardrobe is also quite laborious to install. Precise measurements are required, and the slightest deviation can cause the door to scrape to the top or cause problems after a short period of use.
Also, the use of the internal space of this wardrobe is actually not very reasonable. Because the door is so high, the space on the upper level of the wardrobe is not very convenient to take things, and it often becomes a place to stack items that are not commonly used.
Moreover, if the partition inside the wardrobe is not adjustable, it is less adaptable for storing different types of clothes.
8. Do not install a rock slab integrated basin
At first, many people were fascinated by the smooth surface and seamless design of the slate basin, and felt that with it, the bathroom became luxurious. But after staying for a long time, you will find that this thing is actually quite squeamish.
First of all, the cleaning and maintenance of the rock slab integrated basin is a big problem. Although the surface is smooth, those subtle seams and corners are not easy to clean.
Secondly, the bottom of the rock slab integrated basin is not integrally formed, but glued process, once subjected to a large impact or uneven pressure, it is easy to fall to the bottom.
9. Do not install invisible baseboards
When I first heard about the invisible baseboard, it felt quite novel, the wall looked clean and neat, there was no protruding corners and corners like the traditional baseboard, and the overall feeling was simple and atmospheric. But it turns out to be really time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly.
The installation of the invisible baseboard requires the chisel of the wall, which is not a trivial matter, and it is necessary to ensure that the depth and width of the wall groove are just right, otherwise the installation may lead to an awkward gap between the wall and the floor, or it may not be installed at all.
Workers had to be careful not to damage the wall structure, and the dust and noise generated were also a problem.
As a result, the renovation period has to be extended, and the cost has also risen, because in addition to the labor cost, the cost of repairing the wall in the later stage must be calculated.
In short, the decoration is not as novel as possible, and blindly following the trend sometimes brings a lot of trouble. Remember, home is for living, not for exhibitions.
When decorating, those seemingly fashionable designs may not be suitable for everyone, and may not stand the test of time. Practicality is the core of decoration, it is related to whether every day of your future life is comfortable and convenient.
