Cherish groundwater resources and protect a healthy ecological environment. On April 13, the first National Conference on Groundwater Resources and Ecological Environment was held in Wuhan. More than 1,200 representatives from many domestic universities, research institutes and related industry units attended the meeting, including 7 academicians and more than 100 national high-level talents, which was an academic feast in the field of groundwater science in mainland China.
In the context of global climate change and the increasingly strong impact of human activities, the sustainable and safe supply of groundwater resources, groundwater and ecological environmental protection are major challenges facing human society today. The conference lasted for two days, and 24 sub-venues were set up in many fields, such as groundwater resources and ecological environment, causes of groundwater quality, groundwater and human health, groundwater-surface water interaction, pollution control and restoration technology, and new technologies and methods of groundwater research.

In recent years, the academic achievements and international influence in the field of groundwater science in mainland China have been increasing day by day. At the opening ceremony, Academician Wang Yanxin, Chairman of the Conference and President of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), delivered a speech, expressing his heartfelt thanks to the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the China Geological Survey for their care and guidance, as well as the support of experts and scholars, organizers and co-organizers in the field of groundwater science across the country.
He said that the conference was a "big military parade" in the field of groundwater science in the mainland. As the first school in China to carry out the cultivation of high-level talents in hydrogeology, Geosciences University has formed an interdisciplinary education and scientific and technological innovation system of "water-soil-gas-life-environment". Wang Yanxin hopes that this conference can fully embody the purpose of "innovation, cooperation, leapfrogging and forward-looking", promote the integration of innovation in the field of groundwater science and science and education industry, and promote academic exchanges and cooperation.

At the opening ceremony, Academician Yuan Daoxian of the Institute of Karst Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Academician Wang Jiyang of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Academician Lin Xueyu of Jilin University delivered video speeches respectively. Academician Yuan Daoxian said that groundwater, as one of the most important freshwater resources on the earth, is facing unprecedented pressure and challenges. How to scientifically and rationally utilize and protect groundwater resources has become an important topic before us. He hoped that the experts and scholars attending the conference would have extensive exchanges and discussions at the conference, so as to provide new inspiration for the protection of groundwater resources and the construction of the ecological environment in the mainland and even the whole country.
Academician Wang Jiyang said that groundwater and surface water are inseparable, and the entire earth's hydrosphere is a whole, and the two must not be separated when carrying out scientific research, especially from the perspective of ecological environment. At the same time, when studying groundwater or surface water, in addition to geophysics and geochemistry, it should also be carried out from underground microbiology. He also said that when studying issues related to groundwater science, it is also necessary to integrate them with major national projects.
Academician Lin Xueyu said that the successful convening of the first National Conference on Groundwater Resources and Ecological Environment will further promote the innovation and development of groundwater science in the mainland, further promote the process of integration of science, education, industry, academia, research and application, and make first-class contributions to protecting the ecological environment, promoting green development, and promoting the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. She also said that in the development of groundwater science, there is an urgent need to cultivate high-quality comprehensive talents with a global vision and multidisciplinary background. "As the main body of innovation, young scientific and technological workers are the new force to promote the development of disciplines and scientific and technological innovation, and they are the new quality of productivity. Academician Lin Xueyu said that she suggested that organizations at all levels should pay more attention to the cultivation of young talents, especially to support outstanding young talents with scientific potential.

During the conference, Academician Wu Fengchang of the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, Academician Peng Jianbing of Chang'an University, Professor Zheng Chunmiao of Ningbo Oriental University of Technology, Professor Xu Tianfu of Jilin University, and Researcher Pang Zhonghe of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences successively made keynote speeches at the conference, which were brilliant and enthusiastic. The sub-venues of the conference also carried out 484 reports, 42 posters, groundwater environmental monitoring, simulation and remediation and related instrument and equipment companies participated in the exhibition, and held academic activities such as academic paper exhibitions, special reports for graduate students and young scholars, fund lectures, and seminars on the development strategy of the frontier of disciplines.
