In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, Italy has 56 universities in 577 subjects, ranking seventh in the world.
According to the Italian Tgcom24 network and Ansa news agency, the QS World University Rankings by Subject are compiled annually to help students screen and locate leading universities in a specific subject area.
The World University Rankings by Subject 2024 includes more than 1,500 universities from 96 countries and regions around the world, divided into five disciplines: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management, covering 55 disciplines.
In terms of the number of majors on the list, the United States ranks first with 3,039 majors from 213 universities. In addition, American universities lead 32 disciplines, occupying an absolute advantage, of which Harvard University ranks first among 19 disciplines, and MIT ranks second. The UK has 103 universities with 1,569 subjects in the list, with universities leading the way in 16 subjects, ranking second.
Chinese mainland has 101 universities with 882 majors in the list, ranking third. This is followed by Germany and Australia.
Italy is ranked seventh in the world and second in the European Union, with 577 subjects from 56 universities, 47 more than last year.

The University of Milan is ranked first in Italy in three disciplines. It is ranked 80th in the world for Medicine, 33rd in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, and 34th in Veterinary Medicine.
Politecnico di Milano is ranked 7th in the world for the disciplines of Art & Design, Architecture & Built Environment.
In this ranking, the University of Rome, the University of Bologna and the University of Padua have 47, 46 and 37 majors respectively, making it the largest number of Italian universities on the list. It is followed by the University of Milan and the Federico II University of Naples.
Looking at the overall results, 45% of Italian universities remained stable in the rankings, 19% improved and 24% declined. The University of Rome improved the most, moving up 21% in the rankings. Italy's Luiss University grew by 17% to be ranked first in Italy and 19th in the world for Politics and International Studies.
