Farewell two songs

Du Mu

More than thirteen years old, cardamom tips in early February.

Spring breeze ten miles of Yangzhou Road, roll up the bead curtain is not as good.

Du Mu's "Two Farewell Songs" mentions "cardamom", and "cardamom tips in early February" are metaphors for flowers, describing women as petite and beautiful, like cardamom flowers that are budding in early February. Nowadays, everyone often uses "cardamom years" to describe thirteen or fourteen-year-old girls, referring to the youth of girls.

Which variety of cardamom did Du Mu mention?

There are four varieties of cardamom that we use today: nutmeg, grass cardamom, white cardamom and red cardamom. The four cardamom medicinal materials are produced in southeast China and Southeast Asia, among which white cardamom and nutmeg are mostly imported. In ancient times, the cardamom recorded in the Materia Medica was basically the fruit of today's galangal, because these two plants belong to the same family, and the efficacy is similar, it is not easy to distinguish, and there is still a habit of using galangal as cardamom in medicine.

Combined with the geographical location, dynasties, and seasons when Du Mu wrote his poems, combined with the flowering period of the four cardamoms and the time when they flowed into China, it is not difficult to deduce that the cardamom in Du Mu's poems refers to the traditional Chinese medicine - grass cardamom.

Grass cardamom

It has the function of strengthening the spleen and dampness, warming and practicing qi, especially "warm and dry", and is used for chest fullness, abdominal distension and cold pain, heating and vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, and lack of food and drink caused by cold and dampness blocking the spleen and stomach or weak spleen and stomach. There are as many as 18 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine preparations with cardamom, which mainly appear in the preparations for the treatment of stomach diseases such as stomach pain, cold diarrhea, qi stagnation and Zhongjiao, such as ginseng rebuilding pills, stomach strengthening tablets, and whitening pills.

Unilateral or prescription preparations related to grass cardamom can be used in gastroenterology, malignant gas, malaria, gynecology and other fields. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that cardamom also has many pharmacological activities such as protecting gastric mucosa, antitumor, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, and anti-sepsis.
