Wang Yuling's acquaintance with Zhang Lingfu is not accidental. Wang Yuling was born in 1928 and came from a prominent family, but after the early death of his father, the family's fortune gradually declined. After experiencing the baptism of the Anti-Japanese War, Wang Yuling was famous for his peerless appearance in Changsha and became a well-known local figure. At the same time, Zhang Lingfu, as a military general, participated in the Battle of Changsha, and fate made them meet in the flames of war.
According to Wang Yuling's recollection, Zhang Lingfu once sought to be introduced by others on a blind date. Wang Yuling's family background and beauty attracted Zhang Lingfu's attention, although some people said that she was short-tempered, but this trait made Zhang Lingfu feel that she was different. Once met by chance in a barbershop, Wang Yuling glared at Zhang Lingfu directly, which aroused his interest, thus starting an unforgettable love story.
Although Wang Yuling's mother had reservations about this marriage, Wang Yuling firmly believed in Zhang Lingfu's self-motivation and quality, and finally persuaded her mother to enter the palace of marriage with Zhang Lingfu. However, happy times were short-lived. Just as he was preparing for the wedding, Zhang Lingfu received a promotion order from the commander of the Nanjing Garrison and urgently went to Nanjing.
On May 16, 1947, Zhang Lingfu died in battle at the age of 47, leaving behind 19-year-old Wang Yuling and a son less than 3 months old. Faced with the departure of her husband, Wang Yuling chose to face it strongly, leaving the mainland with her son and mother and going to Taiwan. Subsequently, she took her son to the United States to study alone, and through a work-study program, she obtained a degree in finance and accounting from New York University.
Life in the United States has not been easy, Wang Yuling has grown from a girl who relies on her family to an independent woman. She worked at American Airlines until her retirement and actively participated in the public welfare activities of the Chinese community to help the Chinese in the United States solve their life difficulties. In 2003, Wang Yuling returned to Shanghai and erected a tombstone for her husband Zhang Lingfu, expressing her nostalgia for her lost love.
In 2005, she was invited to return to Menglianggu to remember her husband's bravery. On October 9, 2021, Wang Yuling died of illness in Shanghai at the age of 93. Her life is full of legends, witnessing the vicissitudes of Chinese history, but also showing the tenacity of women.
