The beginning and end of the shooting
On the evening of 30 June 1985, the leaders of the military department, who had just finished their command work, came to the military canteen to prepare a meal, and they were army commander Zhang Zhijian, deputy army commander Tong Zhuo, chief of staff Su Rongsheng, and political department directors Huang Xin and Liu Chuanpeng, as well as a group of guards.
Several people sat down around a round table in the cafeteria, preparing to discuss the war situation while eating as usual, because it was less than a month after the "211 Heights" incident, and everyone's mood was extremely heavy.
A few people were eating and analyzing their views on the next battle, and just as everyone was talking, a burst of gunfire suddenly came from nowhere.
Everyone subconsciously thought that an enemy had infiltrated the military region, and they scattered and fled in all directions, because the matter happened in a hurry, and everyone could only rely on experience and instinct to cover it.
Among them, Huang Xin, director of the Political Department, was escorted by guard Hou Weidong and hid in a wooden house next to the canteen. There were two rounds of gunfire, and then someone was heard shouting "Get out of the way, get out of the way......", Huang Xin looked out of the window of the wooden house and found that the shooter was nowhere to be found.
The commander was shot in the right arm, but fortunately he did not hurt the bones, and Director Liu Chuanpeng was shot five times because his position was facing the gunman, but he did not hurt the vital point.
The most seriously wounded was a soldier surnamed Yu, who was shot twice, both of which hit the vital point, and his spleen and kidneys were pierced, blood flowed all over the ground, and he was already in a state of shock on the spot.
Chief of Staff Su Rongsheng was not injured because he dodged in time and hid under the table.
After the shooting occurred suddenly, and after the gunmen fled, the organization was worried that the enemy would take the opportunity to provoke an incident, so Deputy Army Commander Tong and Chief of Staff Su Rongsheng, who were not injured, quickly threw themselves into the front-line combat command, so the heavy task of finding the real culprit of the shooting case was handed over to Huang Xin, director of the Political Department.
Director Huang Xin was ordered to quickly gather his thoughts, and he immediately called an emergency meeting of the relevant personnel to determine the identity and whereabouts of the gunman.
Fortunately, after the meeting was held, the identity of the murderer was quickly determined, and it turned out that when the gunman was shooting, there was a female soldier of the communications company, Kong Hong, who happened to witness the whole process of his shooting, and Kong Hong pointed out that the person who fired the shot was not an enemy who had sneaked in from outside, but a soldier named Wang Zhongqiu from the cooking squad of the military region.
Subsequently, Director Huang Xin sent people to look for Wang Zhongqiu, but they were not found, and at the same time, everyone also found that Wang Zhongqiu's submachine gun disappeared with him, and under all kinds of evidence, it is not difficult to confirm that Wang Zhongqiu is indeed the real murderer of the shooting.
In order to arrest Wang Zhongqiu as soon as possible, Huang Xin put forward two ideas: One is to analyze the direction in which Wang Zhongqiu may flee according to the connection of several locations where he last appeared, and the other is to judge his traces according to the ballistic traces left by bullets.
Everyone analyzed the clues in detail, but did not get an effective direction, and finally found the clues from the words of the commander of the guard company.
It turned out that after the shooting, he rushed out as soon as possible, and almost all the people at that time were running in the direction of the small cafeteria, and only one ran in the opposite direction with a submachine gun against the flow of people, so he immediately judged that this person was different, so he did not hesitate to chase after him.
However, when he chased him near a soldier's residence, he suddenly disappeared, and when he looked around, he could not find any sign of the gunman, so he had to return the same way. Hearing this, Huang Xin asked him to think carefully about whether there was anything around him where he could hide people.
The commander of the guard company suddenly remembered that there was a water storage tank near there, and Wang Zhongqiu was probably hiding there.
After listening to the inference of the commander of the guard company, Huang Xin decided to immediately send someone to stick to the water storage tank and observe whether anyone appeared at all times. On the other hand, in order to prevent Wang Zhongqiu from fleeing to other places, notices were posted in various parts of the military region, and at the same time, security patrols were stepped up, so that Wang Zhongqiu must be arrested and brought to justice in the shortest possible time.
Until the early morning of the next day, the guard company began to check the water storage tank, and finally found Wang Zhongqiu, who had been at the bottom of the pond, according to the inspection, Wang Zhongqiu's cause of death was detonated and died, and the time of death was about nine o'clock the night before.
At this point, the murderer of the shooting has been caught.
At the same time, because of the tense military situation, Commander Zhang, who was slightly injured, returned to his command post after a simple bandage, and Director Liu Chuanpeng was out of danger after rescue, and only the soldier was less than because the injury was too serious when he was sent to the rescue, and finally the rescue was ineffective and died.
Although Wang Zhongqiu has committed suicide and his body has been recovered, why he attacked the head of his military region with a gun is still the biggest puzzle in everyone's hearts.
Some people think that Wang Zhongqiu has betrayed the country and is a spy planted by the enemy in our army, while others believe that it was because of the improper command of the upper leaders and the heavy casualties, which caused dissatisfaction among the soldiers, so Wang Zhongqiu took a risk...... Unfounded rumors like these abound.
In order to stabilize the morale of the army and find out the real reason for the shooting, Huang Xin led people to further examine the items left behind by Wang Zhongqiu, and finally found the truth of the matter.
"211 Heights" incident
Everything has to go back to more than a month ago, when the war against Vietnam, the 211 heights located in the Lao Son front theater were once the military heights occupied by the 1st Army, and later the 67th Army took over after the change of defense.
Thirteen days later, the Vietnamese army launched a fierce attack on the 211 Heights, and the 211 Heights were reoccupied by the Vietnamese troops in a situation where the enemy was strong and we were weak.
At the subsequent operational command meeting, Zheng Guangchen, commander of the 199th Division of the 67th Army, suggested not attacking for the time being, because the troops had just changed their defenses and were not familiar with the situation of the enemy's troops and positions, and the military and strategic significance of the 211 Heights was not very significant, so it was necessary to preserve its strength first, and wait until the right time to win with one blow.
However, Zheng Guangchen's proposal was not only not adopted, but was reprimanded by Su Rongsheng, the chief of staff of the 67th Army at the time, who thought that he was "afraid of war", "wavering" and "not firm".
Su Rongsheng is the son of the founding general Su Yu, and he has also had a lot of brilliant achievements before, he is very disdainful of Zheng Guangchen's behavior of "growing the morale of others and destroying his own prestige", so in a fit of anger, he sued the army commander, and then Zheng Guangchen was relieved of command, and Su Rongsheng jumped the rank to obtain the command of the 595th Regiment of the 199th Division.
On June 1, 1985, under the command of Su Rongsheng, the 595 Regiment began to counterattack on the 211 Heights, after the battle began, the condescending Vietnamese army carried out a fierce artillery attack on the soldiers of the 595 Regiment, the battle was particularly tragic, the 595 Regiment was almost completely defeated, and the deputy commander of the 1st Company, Jia Ke, was even hung on the stone by the enemy to demonstrate.
The battle for the 211 Heights lasted ten days, and the commander Su Rongsheng issued an order to "recapture the 211 Heights at all costs", and in the end, the 565th Regiment ended the battle with 2 battalions being crushed, the regimental company structure was completely disrupted, and the 3rd company of the reserve team ended the battle at little cost.
More than 120 commandos lost their lives, and countless wounded soldiers wailed on the battlefield, and this tragic result made the whole division of the 199th Division angry with the commander of the 67th Army, so a large number of cadres and soldiers jointly filed a complaint to the headquarters of the Central Military Commission, accusing the chief of staff of the 67th Army of not listening to the opinions of the troops and talking on paper, resulting in a serious defeat in the first battle of the troops.
The headquarters sent people to investigate the situation many times, and finally determined that the commander at that time had made a mistake in judgment, resulting in the defeat of the 67th Army in the first battle and heavy losses, and restored Zheng Guangchen's command.
The truth about the shooting
After the "211 Incident" passed, the morale of the 67th Army was still fluctuating, and Wang Zhongqiu was in it, so he naturally inevitably suffered some influences.
Wang Zhongqiu came from an ordinary background, and unlike many soldiers who enlisted in the army with faith, his original purpose in joining the army was only to get rid of poverty. However, after letting him enter the army, seeing the wounded coming and going, his heart was greatly impacted, and seeing that it was difficult to get ahead, and he might face the danger of losing his life, Wang Zhongqiu's temper became more and more irritable.
Later, because of the urgency of the military situation, there were fewer and fewer letters sent from his hometown, and he even had the idea of suicide, until after his "211 incident", the military region was once in a rumor, and there were more private rumors, Wang Zhongqiu listened to a lot of gossip, he thought that he was about to be sent to the front line to fight, and he would definitely die at that time, so he put all the fault on the leaders of the 67th Army.
So, on the evening of June 30, Wang Zhongqiu, who had fallen into extreme paranoia, pointed his submachine gun at the leaders of the 67th Army who came to eat in the canteen. In his notes, he wrote: "The reason why so many units of the whole army did not come to the front line is that the leaders of the 67th Army were so happy that they took the initiative to ask the Central Military Commission to go to the battlefield, and my fate today is completely caused by the leadership of the army......
It is reported that Wang Zhongqiu had already taken sick leave that morning, prepared a farewell letter, and even before dinner, he went to the cafeteria to see how many sets of dishes and chopsticks were set up on the table where the leaders were eating, which showed that he was ready to shoot the head of the military region at that time.
Wang Zhongqiu's tragedy is ultimately due to his own personality, he was originally to get ahead when he joined the army, but when he really faced the threat of death, he would only hide back, and even when he thought he was cornered, he chose to put all the fault on others, which is sad and pitiful!
Follow-up development
After the shooting, Huang Xin, director of the Political Department, peeled back the cocoon and finally restored the truth of the matter, and as an eyewitness, he recorded everything that happened that day, and then compiled it into a report and reported it to the superiors.
However, because the impact of this incident was extremely bad, the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of State Security, and the Jinan Military Region sent important personnel to the 67th Army to learn more about the causes of the incident.
In order to clear up the rumors and prevent the incident of Wang Zhongqiu from repeating itself, the 67th Army began to organize and discuss the beginning and end of the Laoshan Heights Battle fiasco round after round, so that every soldier could understand the specific situation and the subsequent punishment and reward issues, especially for the surviving soldiers of the 595th Regiment, and gave more psychological condolences.
On September 8, three months after the shooting, Yuan Ming, deputy commander of the reconnaissance company of the 199th Division, and He Guangming, deputy instructor, led a 17-member commando team to launch a daytime surprise attack on the 211 heights.
In the end, the 211 heights were reoccupied at the cost of two minor injuries, but later due to the retaliatory shelling of the Vietnamese army, Yuan Ming was finally blinded in his left eye, and two squad leaders died.
The command of the 199th Division was returned to Zheng Guangchen, and Su Rongsheng also stopped his career for many years due to his misjudgment and improper command, which also became an important reason for his rapid decline in reputation.
Both the "211 Heights" incident and the subsequent Wang Zhongqiu shooting case tell us that even in war, political work is equally important, and if the army's morale is weakened, it will be self-defeating, and the stability of the army's morale is the key to achieving the final victory.
