Scroll of the First Snow of the River Journey, Painting by Zhao Gan of the Southern Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties, ink and color on silk (25.9x376.5 cm), annotated, Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei

The volume of "The First Snow of the River Travel" was painted by Zhao Gan in the Southern Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties. The scroll depicts the life of the fishermen seen on the riverside in the south, when the snow is falling, and the harmony and diligence of the common people's activities can still be seen in the gloom. The whole canvas is stained with light ink and stained on the silk floor, and then sprinkled with white powder for snow.

The frontispiece has an inscription by Li Yu, the queen of the Southern Tang Dynasty: The first snow of the Southern Tang Dynasty in the early snow of the river, the state of Zhao Gan, a student of the Southern Tang Dynasty. This volume is now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

"The First Snow of the River" is a painting that pays equal attention to landscape figures, and it is also a very early silk landscape painting in the hand-me-down works.

The painter Zhao Gan, a native of Jiangning, Jiangsu, was a student of the Academy of Painting during the reign of Empress Li of the Southern Tang Dynasty. Since he was a child, he grew up in the south of the Yangtze River, so most of the landscapes he painted are Jiangnan scenes, and he is especially good at scenery.

In this handscroll, the artist uses the curved Huanglu embankment to construct a vast river surface. In the painting, the cold and snow are falling, and the fishermen by the river continue to work against the wind and snow in order to make a living, and they are extremely hard. The tourists walking on the shore also braved the cold and snow to hurry, and the people and donkeys all carried a face that was difficult to walk in the bitter cold, and the painter reflected the freezing river sky in the painting through the expressions of the characters.

The whole canvas is stained with light ink and stained on the silk floor, and then sprinkled with white powder for snow. The dead trees in the cold forest are all used with a center round pen, which is very powerful. The trunk of the tree is dyed with a dry pen, and it has its own yin and yang to the back. The reed flowers painted are wrapped in ochre ink, and they are made of one stroke, which is very creative. The hillocks and the foot of the slope are also painted in pieces of light ink without wrinkles. There are gold, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty collection seals on this plate, which proves that this volume is a fine product that has been handed down.

The first snow of the river

In the painting, there are various details about the life of the fishermen between the banks of the Shuizhu River, from rowing, Zhang Gu, and even cooking. The vivid expressions of the figures, and even their shrinking postures, add to the imagination of the situation in the painting.

The depiction of the rocky surface in the painting is a kind of dyeing and halo treatment that does not have a specific method, which is similar to the rocky surface in the "Deep Mountain Chess Club" unearthed from the Liao tomb of the Five Dynasties, which should be a style characteristic before the Northern Song Dynasty. In this way, there is no specific method, and there is a similar phenomenon in the description of the texture of the tree, and even the treatment of the tail end of the branch does not have the influence of the claw-like branch of the Northern Song Dynasty Li Guo crab. These tree methods and the rustic techniques of rocks can show that this work was completed no later than the Northern Song Dynasty.

In terms of the title of the painting, the painting depicts the hard work of fishermen in the cold and early snow, which is a kind of genre painting, which is used to present the social feelings. At the end of this painting, there is a record of the joint submission of eleven ministers of the Kuizhang Pavilion in the second year of the Tianli calendar (1329), which is the work submitted by the ministers for the emperor's governance after the establishment of the Kuizhang Pavilion by Yuan Wenzong.

The painting academies of the Southern Tang Dynasty and Later Shu were the important towns of the painting world before the establishment of the Song Dynasty, and they were also the main force of court painting in the Northern Song Dynasty. Zhao Gan served in the Southern Tang Dynasty Painting Academy, and the inscription at the beginning of this volume is said to be the handwriting of the later master Li Yu, which increases the importance of this work in the history of painting. The activities of fishermen seen on a winter trip to the riverside are the subject of this volume. This was originally a "genre painting" used by the emperor to observe the folk customs, but Zhao Gan deliberately depicted various fisherman shapes and fishing methods in the painting, and used details such as a boy with a shrunken body and a donkey walking against the wind to create a more realistic visual effect.
