Myth Fava beans contain toxic substances, and eating them raw can cause "fava bean disease"?

Truth: This statement is very loose, and for most ordinary people who do not have this disease, eating broad beans in moderation does not cause health problems, so there is no need to worry.

But about 5% of the world's population suffers from an inherited enzyme deficiency – glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. People who lack this enzyme in the body will be unable to be processed in time because the oxidizing components in the broad bean can not be processed in time, resulting in oxidative hemolysis of red blood cells, and patients will have symptoms such as fever and jaundice, and in severe cases, coma, shock and even organ failure, which will be life-threatening. This disease, also known as "fava bean disease", can be caused by fava beans, so such patients should not eat fava beans. In addition, if the baby eats broad beans for the first time, he must control the amount, observe whether there are any adverse reactions, and send him to the hospital immediately if there is any abnormality.
