Polyphthalamide (PPA) is a high-performance polyamide that continues to expand in the global market
Polyphthalamide, abbreviated as PPA, is a semi-aromatic polyamide, which belongs to thermoplastic resin, and the product has two kinds of semi-crystalline PPA and amorphous PPA, and the proportion of amorphous PPA application is relatively high. The preparation of polyphthalamide is made from terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid, or by polymerization of phthalamide monomer.
Polyphthalamide has the characteristics of high hardness, high strength, high flexural modulus, high creep resistance, good dimensional stability, good fatigue resistance, high melting point, high glass transition temperature, good heat resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, low density, etc., its strength is higher than that of steel, and it can still maintain excellent tensile strength, creep resistance, dimensional stability under high temperature conditions, can resist acid and alkali, organic solvent erosion, and has better comprehensive performance compared with aliphatic polyamide.
Polyphthalamides can be reinforced to make composite materials, such as glass fibers for glass fiber reinforced polyphthalamides, and can be blended with aliphatic polyamides, such as polyphenylene ethers to create reinforced polyphthalamide/polyphenylene ether compositions to further improve product performance. With excellent performance, polyphthalamide can replace nylon 6, nylon 66, polyphenylene sulfide PPS, polyetheretherketone PEEK, die-casting alloys, etc. in some applications.
Polyphthalamide can be used in a wide range of downstream applications, in the automotive field, it can be used to manufacture transmission system components, high-temperature connector housings, fuel pipelines, fuel shut-off valves, coolant pumps, coolant pipes, headlights, etc.; in the field of electronic and electrical, it can be used as an insulating material, can be used to manufacture surface mount devices, switching components, connectors, wire and cable protective sleeves, etc.; in addition, it can also manufacture oil pipelines, aircraft parts and structural parts, medical catheters, household fan impeller gears, toothbrush bristles, sports equipment, etc.
According to the "2024-2029 China Polyphthalamide (PPA) Industry Market In-depth Research and Development Prospect Forecast Report" released by the Xinsijie Industry Research Center, the demand for high-performance polyphthalamide applications is rising in the context of the development of automotive lightweight. In 2023, the global polyphthalamide market size will be about 11.32 billion yuan, and it is expected that the global polyphthalamide market will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.8% from 2023 to 2029, and the global polyphthalamide market size is expected to reach 16.80 billion yuan by 2029.
Industry analysts said that globally, polyphthalamide manufacturers mainly include DuPont (Dupont) of the United States, Arkema (France), BASF (BASF) (Germany), Evonik (Germany), AKRO-PLASTIC (Germany), EMS Grivory (Switzerland), Solvay (Belgium), SABIC, Mitsui Chemicals (Mitsui Chemicals) of Japan, China Zhejiang Xinhecheng Special Materials Co., Ltd., etc. In the early days, the mainland polyphthalamide market was monopolized by foreign enterprises, and with the support of national policies, NHU completed the construction of the polyphthalamide pilot plant in 2014, breaking the monopoly pattern of market imports.
