That night, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in Beijing and went straight to the Lao Sichuan restaurant to taste Sichuan cuisine and taste the Sichuan cuisine she had in mind. According to the embassy staff, she proposed before leaving: "I want to eat Sichuan food!" After careful investigation, the embassy staff finally selected the Laochuan Office Restaurant in Dongcheng District.
Yellen chose to dine in the lobby. Yang Rongliang, the person in charge of the Laochuan Office Guest House, led her to talk about Sichuan as the land of abundance and the hometown of giant pandas, located in western China, and introduced Sanxingdui culture, Song Dynasty porcelain, and Wuliangye and other famous wines to her in front of the display cabinet in the hall. Yellen listened attentively and happily, asked with interest from time to time, gladly accepted the gift, and gave back a medal engraved with her name on it.
Yellen chose home-cooked Sichuan dishes such as back pot meat, boiled beef, mapo tofu, northern Sichuan jelly, dandan noodles, Sichuan cold noodles, Zhongshui dumplings, and panda glutinous rice balls, and ate very happily. Chef Li Qiang introduced her to classic Sichuan dishes such as back-pot pork and mapo tofu.
Sichuan cuisine, as the cuisine with the widest mass base among the eight major cuisines in China, was promoted in Washington, New York and other places in the United States as a "messenger" of reform and opening up in the early 80s of the 20th century. At present, Sichuan cuisine has become a popular local cuisine in the United States. Yellen was full of praise for the dishes at the restaurant, and at the end of the dinner, she heartily praised: "The dishes are really amazing, and I hope to come back again!"
On April 7, the media visited the Laochuan Office restaurant, and Yang Rongliang, executive director and general manager of Beijing Chuanjingban Guest House Co., Ltd., said that he presented Shu embroidery to Yellen at that time, and Yellen gave him a U.S. Treasury Department medal in return. Yang Rongliang said that he believes that this commemorative medal will become a witness to Sino-US friendship.
It is understood that the Laochuan Office Restaurant is located in Dongzongbu Hutong, Jianguomen, Dongcheng District, and is named after the guest house of the Sichuan Provincial People's Government Office in Beijing. Later, the "Sichuan Longzhuo Tree Hotel" near Xiaohongmen outside Beijing's Third Ring Road became the "Xinchuan Ban Restaurant", and diners called the restaurant in Jianguomen Dongzongbu Hutong "Laochuan Ban Restaurant".
