The foreign names of those seedlings were too awkward, Zhang Gong invited the literati with poetry and books to live in the vineyard, drink wine and eat meat in large bowls, and the interested literati looked at each other and communicated with the grape seedlings of different shapes, and one by one poetic and catchy names came out: Cabernet Sauvignon, Snake Sauvignon Franc, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Guirenxiang, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer...... These seedlings, which have Chinese names, have gradually adapted to China's water and soil, and have spread their branches and leaves in the rich land of Yantai.
For more than 130 years, generations of horticulturists have devoted their bodies and minds to the vineyard. They look at the vines in the wind, as if they are watching their children grow up, they listen to the sound of the seedlings growing, and they feel the mellow wine flowing gently. In order to produce the best grapes, they spend their days with the seedlings, improving the old varieties and crossing the new ones, changing the soil, fertilizing the plants and rows, and adjusting the plant spacing and row spacing to give the grapes plenty of sunlight and moisture.
With the expansion of the wine industry, the grape planting area has increased from 1,000 acres, 10,000 acres to hundreds of thousands of acres. The original owners of the land became the protagonists of the vineyard management, and they received both the transfer fee for the land and a remuneration for their labor, and everyone was satisfied, and everyone was happy. Wine is magical, and wine is not only magical, it's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. It is the winemakers who concoct this wonderful thing, they have a quest in their hearts, a magic method in their hands, and the people of the wine city regard these mysterious people as immortals.
The one with a thick brown beard was the first winemaker Babao, who was the vice-consul of the Austro-Hungarian Consulate in Yantai. In order to produce high-quality wines, he took advantage of his superiority as a Westerner, took the lead in introducing grape varieties from Europe, purchased Western brewing equipment, implemented modern brewing technology, and made suggestions for the construction of underground wine cellars, and finally made China's first bottle of wine and the first bottle of brandy in Changyu. Eighteen years later, he left his post and returned to China, but his spirit of innovation and quality has been passed down from generation to generation among winemakers. Succeeding Babao as Changyu's second winemaker was Zhang Zizhang, the nephew of Zhang Bishi, a scholar who studied both China and the West, and made the only flavored wine in China to date, Vermouth, which won a gold medal at the Panama Expo. The third-generation winemaker, Badistoch, came to Changyu from Italy with a grand piano, and with the accompaniment of music, he poetically made the first bottle of dry red wine in China, Changyu Cabernet. Later, Zhu Mei, Chen Puxian, etc., all of them were extraordinary.
Drinking is a good thing for ordinary people, but it is a boring errand for winemakers. They should not eat too much, lest they have a peculiar taste; they should not eat spicy food, so as not to lose their sensitivity; they should taste wine dozens of times a day to find the right ratio; and every year they should drink thousands of types of wine, and choose the best among them.
The current chief winemaker of Changyu is Li Jiming. He was a doctor, a professor, not tall and thin, but with a lofty mind and wise and bright eyes. It is he who has taken the lead in organizing and building a first-class winemaker team in China, and it is he who has devoted his talents and made a lot of innovative and forward-looking efforts in the winemaking process, so that the quality of Changyu liquor can be from the middle end to the high-end, and from the high-end to the peak.
There is also a winemaker named Zhang Baochun who is as famous as Li Jiming. Her name is thunderous and poetic, but she didn't have a chance to meet. I saw a picture of her tasting wine: in front of an oak barrel, dressed in a smart coffee-colored overalls, holding a goblet in her hand, intently smelling brandy, elegant and dignified. She devoted herself to the study of brandy from a young age, dedicating her youth and beauty to Changyu's winemaking career, becoming the chief master of brandy in China. In recent years, she has led the formulation of a new national standard for brandy with the Keya team, and proposed the standard grade of "Winery Brandy" for the first time in the world, leading the high-quality development of China's brandy and making Yantai brandy fragrant to the world.
These winemakers, living in reality and in the imagination of the people of the wine city, are ordinary people and mysterious wine saints who are skillful in blending fine wine. In fact, they are not preparing a wonderful life for the people of Jiucheng and the world!
