Most of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region will enter the peak season of willow catkins in mid-April
Hu Xiao, chief meteorological analyst of China Weather Network, said that temperature is the primary factor that determines the start of willow catkins. Generally, only the average temperature exceeds 0 °C to promote the development of poplars, starting from January each year, when the average temperature exceeds 0 °C and the total temperature value reaches 480 °C, a region of poplar catkins may enter the first flight period. After entering the first flight period, factors such as light, humidity and wind speed will affect the flying intensity, and the weather conditions with wind strength of 2 to 3 and relative humidity less than 40% are conducive to the flying of catkins.
From late February to early March this year, due to the continuous low temperature, the growth and development of poplars and willows in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region was slower than that of the same period in normal years. Since mid-March, the temperature in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has been significantly higher than normal, the flower bud growth and flowering duration of poplar willow trees have been shortened, and the growth and development process of poplar tomentosa and willow has been significantly accelerated.
At the beginning of April, the above-mentioned areas warmed up rapidly, and the maximum temperature in many places in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei exceeded 25 °C, which also made the annual "April snow" kick off. Overall, this year, poplar catkins and catkins in most areas of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei are 3 to 5 days later than usual.
Judging from the 2024 poplar catkins warning map, as of now, most of Henan, southern Shandong, southern Hebei and other places have entered the peak flying period; central Hebei, Beijing-Tianjin, and eastern Shandong will enter the peak flying period in mid-April; the Shandong Peninsula and central Shanxi will enter the peak flying period slightly later, in late April; and the northern part of Shanxi and northern Hebei will not enter the peak flying period until late April.
Among them, this year's poplar catkins in Beijing will be divided into three stages: April 12 to 18 ushered in the first wave of the peak flying period, mainly from the white poplar; around the end of April, the European and American poplar and poplar will enter the peak flying period, and at the same time the catkins peak flying period opens; in mid-May, the European and American poplars in the mountainous areas enter the full flying period.
It is expected that from April 8th to 9th, under the influence of a weak cold air, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and other places may have a slight cooling and weak precipitation, which will play a certain role in inhibiting the flying of poplar catkins. However, around the 11th, with the cold air moving away, most areas of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shandong, and Henan are dominated by sunny and hot weather, and the temperature rises rapidly, and the maximum temperature returns to 25 °C or above, which is conducive to the spread of flying flotsam in the above areas, and it is necessary to pay attention to protection when going out.

The catkins in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region are about to enter the peak flying period, and 10 o'clock to 16 o'clock is the most vigorous time of the day, and outdoor activities should be avoided as much as possible during this period.
