The expansion of the structure determines the distance between these counterweights and the local landscape, which will eventually occupy the entire pavilion.

The Espina gazebo is the product of the synergy of different elements that interact to achieve a structural and visual balance. The project is a gazebo with no clear functional definition and its sole purpose is to provide shade and direct the eye to the horizon. Covering an area of only 21 square meters, the Espina Pavilion offers a 360-degree panoramic view that connects visitors with the landscape of the mountains.

Located on the top of a hill on a ranch in Santiago de Querétaro, the project consists of a lightweight roof supported by a concrete base and a metal frame structure. This frame structure serves a dual purpose – on the one hand, it delimits the floor area and, on the other hand, extends in the form of a cantilever to the west façade. The cantilever is supported by a gabion mesh and anchored with a cable on the opposite side.

Considering the topography of the site and the restricted access conditions (only four-wheeled vehicles and horses were allowed to enter), the architects decided to pour concrete on the site. Steel was chosen because it is easy to assemble in the field and can be used in modular components. On the other hand, these gabions are built from local stone that is mined while laying foundations. The expansion of the structure determines the distance between these counterweights and the local landscape, which will eventually occupy the entire pavilion.

The design integrates Espina as a multifunctional space between two concrete bases, which elevates above the vegetation and extends from north to south, providing horizontal views to the east and west while capturing sunrise and sunset.
