Baidu may provide AI capabilities for Apple's iPhone 16, and more details will be exposed

Today's "Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily" exclusively reported that Baidu will provide AI functions for Apple products and systems such as the national version of the iPhone 16, and it is expected to adopt API interface billing. Apple has also approached Ali to negotiate with another domestic large-scale model company.

Baidu may also not be Apple's only partner, with media reports last week that a number of overseas tech giants, including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, have approached Apple to negotiate the introduction of generative AI technology on the iPhone.

However, the "Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily" pointed out that overseas iPhones will use Apple's own large models. The reason for Chinese mainland's adoption of Baidu's large model may be to quickly solve the compliance problem of AI in the Chinese market.

Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned Apple's current use of AI during his trip to Shanghai last week, and reconfirmed that he will make more information about Apple's AI public this year.

Apple's ambiguous approach to generative AI

Compared with leading technology companies such as Microsoft and Google, Apple, which has not yet launched a chatbot, can be said to be "one step slower" in AI. Judging from the fact that Apple is discussing AI technology cooperation with a number of third-party technology companies, Apple may be "moderately interested" in developing generative AI technology.

Tech journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple will offer an AI chatbot in its system to satisfy consumers, but the company itself may be "less interested".

There are many more benefits to adopting third-party technology. The partnership with Baidu will allow Apple's AI assistant to be quickly made available in China. Microsoft's Copilot has only recently opened up some Office features to Microsoft 365 enterprise users in mainland China, and most online features are not yet available.

And by adopting third-party technology, Apple itself does not have to bear too many moral and privacy responsibilities, as well as the high cost of AI cloud models.

However, before the news of the talks with Google broke, Apple engineers published a paper online revealing some details of MM1, an AI large language model that Apple is developing. It is reported that MM1 appears to be similar to other large language models such as Gemini in terms of design and complexity. MM1 also has the potential to provide technical support for chatbots.

A related paper exemplifies MM1's ability to read and reason: MM1 looks at a sun-dappled restaurant table with pictures of several beer bottles and menus, and when asked "how much do people pay for the beer on the table", MM1 reads out the price of the menu and calculates the price of the beer.

Mark Gurman also reported that Apple has also been testing a large model codenamed Ajax and a chatbot called Apple GPT, though people familiar with the matter say these technologies are inferior to Google and other competitors' tools. At the moment, it is unclear how MM1 relates to Ajax and Apple GPT.

Sources point out that Apple's own development model prefers to run offline locally. Darwin AI, an AI startup it acquired some time ago, is also focused on making AI systems smaller and faster.

However, the current local generative AI technology is difficult to undertake the heavy image and text generation, which may be why Apple wants to choose to cooperate with a third-party company with a more mature AI cloud model to launch a more complete AI chatbot, even if it may not be Apple's ultimate goal.

Apple's different AI strategy

Apple's "latecomer" on generative AI, and the consistently disappointing performance of its voice assistant Siri, make it easy to think that it is ignoring AI. But in fact, Apple has been secretly working on AI and has launched specific features on its products.

In an interview in China, Cook said that AI is already being used in many aspects of Apple products, such as fall detection on the Apple Watch and predictive text input on the iPhone.

The "Siri Suggestions" feature introduced by Apple on iOS 9 to provide app suggestions, schedules, and emails automatically suggests based on scenarios is actually a very early AI and machine learning feature on Apple's system.

In addition, photo face recognition, long-press quick cutout, Spotlight text search and so on on iOS are not "big", but they are all very useful features, all of which are realized by using AI technology.

Apple's attitude towards AI is actually very "conservative". Apple reportedly spends a lot of time discussing how to think about AI, and is also very careful about the relationship between AI learning and privacy — which may be why Apple is more obsessed with running AI locally, expecting a better experience and more protection of user data and privacy. Even when announcing machine learning-related system functions, avoid using terms such as "AI".

Perhaps for Apple, AI should be gradually embedded in the product "silently", rather than as a chatbot that is independent and focused on intelligent learning technology.

But whether it's due to market competition or consumer demand, Apple needs to quickly integrate system-level chatbot technology into next-generation systems, and I am afraid it will no longer be as carefully polished as Vision Pro. As a result, in order to roll out the available generative AI features as quickly as possible, Apple had to work with third parties.

Calling the M3 MacBook Air "the best consumer AI notebook" may also reflect a certain shift in Apple's attitude towards AI, and it has begun to face up to the market's response to its AI technology and products. This year's WWDC may also see more of Apple's thinking about AI, and may be able to change its current posture as a "follower" in the AI field.

Perhaps the evolution of Apple's generative AI will resemble Apple's own mapping app: relying on Google Maps at first, then using its own development, which may have been bad at first, but will get better and better (and China has always been the source of domestic data).
