On January 6, 1951, Huang Yongyu held a solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Data map

In 1949, a young man of twenty-five years old with artistic talent and vigor bravely entered the Xiangjiang River and started a new course of life at the foot of the majestic Lion Rock. This brave and promising young man is Huang Yongyu (1924-2023). In the years that followed, he worked diligently at the foot of the Lion Rock to create a new world, thus forming a deep bond with Hong Kong and contributing to Hong Kong culture, which is worth remembering forever!

After Huang Yongyu arrived in Hong Kong, he worked as an art editor at Ta Kung Pao with his unique artistic genius. During his time in Hong Kong, he developed a lively and lively friendship with a number of Hong Kong cultural figures, including Mr. Chan Kwan Po (1898-1982). At that time, Chan was a Chair in the School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong and Director of the Fung Ping Shan Library. Huang Yongyu fell in love with him very much, and they had frequent contacts, and the two became old friends. Whether Huang Yongyu has a written recollection of this time, it is difficult to verify for the time being. Fortunately, Chen Junbao has the habit of writing a diary, and recorded all the interactions of the year, which has become a reliable document for recalling Huang Yongyu's Xiangjiang years today. Even if it's just a few words, it's intimate and touching to read. And Huang Yongyu's two notes, although the paper is not exquisite, and the writing is also very casual, but they retain the historical information of the year, and also reflect his lovely personality from one side.

In the following, the author takes the true record of "The Complete Diaries of Chen Junbao" (edited by Xie Rongluan, Commercial Press Hong Kong Limited, 2004) as a clue, and intersperses two letters written by Huang Yongyu to Chen Junbao, and the author adds some necessary explanations as appropriate.

November 4, 1949: Cover Huang Yongyu's letter, about woodcuts. Huang lives at No. 23 Wah Avenue.

There is also a little story about Jiuhua Trail. Jiuhua Trail is on the side of the Kowloon Zhuzhijiao Mountain, with many wooden houses, thorns and difficult roads, Huang Yongyu laughingly called it "Dog Climbing Path" to explain its difficult behavior. The hardships of living here can be imagined.

November 25, 1949: The Hong Kong and Kowloon Art Circles Charity Exhibition opened today.

At that time, the Chinese People's Liberation Army quickly moved south to liberate all parts of Guangdong. Hong Kong's patriotic compatriots responded enthusiastically, and the art world also sold the labor army with a charity exhibition, and Huang Yongyu even participated in the creation of "Labor Army Map" for the charity sale. On the 25th, Chen Junbao did not have time to attend, and only arrived on the 27th, and Huang Yongyu also impromptu drew a sketch for Chen Junbao, adding a good story to the charity sale scene. This sketch also bears witness to the deep friendship between the two.

Portrait of Chen Junbao painted by Huang Yongyu.

May 26, 1952: Huang Yongyu asked me to go to his art exhibition, and asked me to talk early.

June 3, 1952: Huang Yongyu was invited to dinner, and Marcel, Qixian, and Lingfeng were invited to accompany him, and the banquet was not dispersed until about 8 o'clock. Yongyu brought her own paintings to me.

June 10, 1952: At dinner, Huang Yongyu arrived to give me a Song porcelain bowl. He said that because the porcelain was too thin to carry, it should be kept with me, and I said, "I'll keep it for you." He came with his wife, and I kept them for dinner, which was really "far from tasteless", and the soldiers couldn't buy good things in a hurry, so they only drank a few glasses of red wine. This time, Yongyu went to Beijing to prepare to teach at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

29 November 1952: Afternoon visit to Wong Wing Yuk on Hung Hom Valley Road. And behold their little ones, who are full moon, and are strong. Yongyu and Chen Ji are preparing to open a photography exhibition.

The diary quoted above on June 10, 1952 describes Huang Yongyu's preparation to return to Beijing to teach, and on November 29, the diary describes Huang Yongyu's child being full moon. Combining the two diaries, it can be inferred that the following letter from Huang Yongyu was also written in the same year. The full text is as follows:

Mr. Chan: I sent a letter the day before yesterday, I don't know if I received it? It is quite laborious to go to Beijing, individuals go to Beijing, it is not as convenient as the group, and Guangzhou can only handle the certificate to Guangzhou, Beijing friends do not know that I have not returned, I have known recently, and I promised to send the certificate directly, hoping to leave recently. I'm busy because I have a baby, so I'm free to visit you. You have two sweaters at my place, if you need them urgently, and the weather is cold, do you want to return them to someone else to take them first? If you have any appointments, please call the Ta Kung Pao Editorial Department at 33912 Liu Pengru or Yan Qingshu's second brother, and I will go to deliver the manuscript every morning.

I learned afterwards that it was not so easy to get from Hong Kong to Beijing. Yan Qingshu (1919-1981), Huang Yongyu mistakenly wrote it as "Yan Guangshu" for a while.

December 4, 1952: At 4:30 p.m., Mr. Yongyu Kai Ai came to tea talk, Ai Neng spoke very fluent Chinese, talked very happily, and left at 6 o'clock. Yongyu also brought Lao Zhang's child, who is very cute and smart.

January 31, 1953: De Yongyuxin, talk about the opening of Qi Baishi Painting Exhibition.

4 February 1953: Letter to Huang Yongyu, informing him of the general situation of Qi Baishi's works in Hong Kong. March 27, 1953: Letter to Huang Yongyu.

April 7, 1953: De Yongyu's letter, saying that they had "testified" and decided to leave on the evening of the 10th, so he immediately replied to his letter and asked them to come to dinner on the evening of the 9th.

The day before, Huang Yongyu and Zhang Meixi sent a letter to Chen Junbao, informing them of the date of their trip to the north:

Chen Fuzi: The day before yesterday, we received a permit from the Beijing work organ, and we decided to leave Macao for Beijing via Guangzhou on the evening of 10 July. The time is very urgent, and we have to take care of chores, if you have nothing special to go out from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the 9th, we are ready to bring the children to the house to say goodbye. Please be well! Please say hello to my wife on my behalf! Yongyu and Meixi will knock together on April 6

Huang Yongyu and Zhang Meixi sent a letter to Chen Junbao.

On the afternoon of April 9, Huang Yongyu and his wife and son (Heiman) came to Chen's house to say goodbye, Chen Junbao stayed for dinner, and the guests and hosts dispersed happily. The following diary records the last traces of Huang Yongyu's years in Hong Kong:

April 9, 1953: I came home earlier than usual this afternoon because I had made an appointment with Mr. and Mrs. Yongyu for dinner. At about 4:40 they came, and found Chen Ji to come with them, and the black man also came, and he was quite lively. I will leave them for dinner, although Yongyu will also go to the Liuguo Hotel, because a colleague from Ta Kung Pao will take care of him. As a result, they did not leave until seven o'clock.

Wong spent more than three years at the foot of the Lion Rock, making important contributions to Hong Kong's arts and culture, and leaving a good memory for local friends.

Chen Junbao's relationship with Huang Yongyu was not interrupted because Huang Yongyu returned to Beijing, and it continued for a long time after that.

Huang Yongyu is versatile, and one of his many talents is woodblock printmaking. He collaborated with another printmaker, Li Liudan (who also worked as an art editor at Ta Kung Pao), on a print called "Picture of the Labor Army", which is a work of great historical significance. The print was later collected by the collector Ngo Dinh Chiet. In order to enrich its collection and commemorative value, Wu Dinh Jie asked Chen Junbao to write a long poem for "Labor Army Map" to enhance the commemorative significance. "Title Huang Yongyu, Li Liudan's 'Labor Army Map'", see Chen Junbao's diary on May 17, 1955, the full poem is as follows:

In April 1949, the Red Army crossed the river to Chuyue. The red flag was reinserted all over the south of the Yangtze River, and the evil atmosphere was swept away by the snake and rat hole. Once the city of Wuyang was restored, the reactionary group was exhausted. The Long March is thousands of miles away, and the fox and rabbit are gone. Looking at the morning sun on Jinggang Mountain, the red light is brilliant and vigorous. In the twenty years of hard work, the army was built and the liberation was successful. The righteous man returned home to ask about the devastation, and the white-headed wild old man died of grief. Turn over the children and remember to pull the clothes, and the word "tower" is left with the inscription to hide the broken pillar. Who will take the dry bones in prison? The strong coward's hooves are still angry! At this time, they are seeing each other again, and they are full of joys and sorrows. It happened that Guan He fulfilled his dream soul, and Xi Shang was a soldier with a strict axe. The pot pulp is welcomed, and the support is not allowed to rest. It is more urgent to march to the border, leaving no trouble in the future. Where did the wolf run, and the remnants entered the sea and even the hu. "The Red Army is not afraid of difficult expeditions" and is fighting hard in the middle of the attack. Millions of athletes are waiting to carry out the revolution. There are countless songs and tears, and I want to make a difference.

The two artists, Huang and Liu, used their superb skills to solidify the spectacular, lively and agile scenes on the plates with carving knives, while Chen Junbao's inscription poems complemented them with rhythmic and magnificent words, enhancing the cultural connotation and historical value of this work. They have made the best use of their talents and strengths, and together they have created a piece of art with genuine feelings and subtle techniques, leaving a glorious page for Hong Kong's Chinese culture, which is commendable.

Huang Yongyu and Li Liudan collaborated on the printmaking "Labor Army".

Until December 15, 1961, Chen Junbao published two seven-character quatrains written for Li Liudan's solo exhibition, in which he did not forget to mention his old friend Huang Yongyu:

The printmaker is known as Huang Yongyu, and now he also knows Li Liudan. If you are looking for the style of sparse density, it is better to see Maban than Xiongwen. (Part 1)

The scenery of the South Island has been since every year, and the ladder has been broadcast. Miasma sea gum smoke palm leaf rain, always rely on the king into the psalms. (Part 2)

On June 13, 2023, Mr. Huang Yongyu passed away in Beijing at the age of 99.
