as a traditional custom
Set off fireworks
It is an indispensable way to celebrate during the Chinese New Year
But in recent days
There have been a number of direct or indirect cases
Accidents in which people are injured by setting off fireworks
In one night, 16 patients were injured by firecrackers
The doctor sighed: Two of them may have their eyeballs removed
On Chinese New Year's Eve, the emergency department of the Second Hospital of Zhejiang University successively received 16 patients directly or indirectly injured by fireworks, the youngest of whom was 14 years old. Two of the young adults were seriously injured and may need to have their eyeballs removed.
A Huzhou man was injured in the right eye by fireworks, and the CT scan showed no obvious laceration. According to the family: "He set off a relatively powerful firework, and before he could run away after lighting the fire, the fireworks exploded in his eyes." After cutting open his conjunctiva, the doctor found four small holes near the cornea, and in addition, he blew a 3-4 cm deep "hole" in the inner canthus of his lower eyelid (between the eye and the nose), which was completely charred and covered with gunpowder and mud.
Before the operation, only the patient with photosensitive vision is left, and there may be risks such as eye inflammation, continuous breakage, and infection, and the eyeball may not be saved.
Another uncle from Dongyang, Zhejiang, was completely invisible in his right eye when he was sent to the hospital: the eyeball was bleeding actively, and the rupture was cracked all the way to the posterior pole, making it difficult to suture. The surgery took more than four hours, but there is a high probability of a follow-up enucleation.
Fireworks are easy to get injured, and there are not a few people who are injured by mistake every year. A 14-year-old girl in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, was injured by fireworks while walking on the road, but fortunately only the eyelashes were burnt, there was some sediment and dirt in the conjunctival sac, and a large break in the conjunctiva.
Urgent reminder: once the eye is injured
Do not open your eyes for examination
In recent years, children have reportedly accounted for 15%-20% of all fireworks injuries. Ninety-two per cent of juveniles under the age of 15 who are injured by fireworks are injured without adult supervision. Of all injuries, 41% were due to the abuse/misuse of fireworks, 35% to ignition failure, and 22% to hand-held firecrackers. The most susceptible to being injured by fireworks is the hands, accounting for more than 70%, followed by the face, limbs, and eyes.
Once you are injured by fireworks, do not open your eyes for examination, do not rub your eyes, squeeze your eyes hard, and do not rinse your eyes or apply ointment by yourself to prevent the sticky contents in your eyes from flowing out and aggravating your condition. Cover your eyes with clean gauze and a towel before seeking medical attention immediately.
If the hand is injured, immediately rinse the wound with tap water, or soak the hand wound in cold water with a water temperature of 15 °C-20 °C until the pain is no longer severe (generally about 0.5 hours-1 hour), if there is a lot of bleeding, immediately press the wound with clean gauze soaked in cold water and a towel to stop the bleeding and seek medical attention in time.
