Young breast cancer in mainland China is defined as a patient who is 35 years of age or younger when breast cancer is first diagnosed. The risk of recurrence was 1.7 times higher in patients younger than 35 years of age at initial diagnosis compared with those older than 35 years of age.
Studies have also shown that the probability of distant metastasis in breast cancer patients is much higher than that of local recurrence, regardless of the surgical method used, and has become the most important reason for treatment failure. What is the reason why young breast cancer is more aggressive and malignant and has a worse prognosis than older breast cancer?
This is closely related to the presence of insulin-like growth factor in the breast gland of young patients, and high levels of this factor are independent risk factors for the development of breast cancer in premenopausal women. In other words, the higher the level of insulin-like growth factor, the faster the tumor cells will grow.
So what can we learn about a factor that sounds so complex? What can it help us with our diet?
In 2022, a top international academic journal Cell published a report on the longevity of dietary regimens that lower insulin-like growth factors and can also indirectly prevent the occurrence of tumors. This diet is known as periodic fasting.
A cyclical fasting diet is a low-calorie, low-protein, low-sugar, and high-fat diet based on plant-based foods. Studies in clinical subjects have shown that receiving cyclical fasting for 3~5 days per month can reduce the level of insulin-like growth factor in the body, and another study has shown that cyclical fasting diet can shorten the treatment period of breast cancer patients. Here, we recommend a diet regimen that is similar to periodic fasting, but better to adhere to:
1. The staple food is mainly non-refined carbohydrates. Unrefined food refers to food that has not undergone excessive human processing, and basically retains the "intact and original" appearance of the food. Such foods include coarse grains such as corn and wheat, as well as red beans and sweet potatoes. The corresponding is refined food, that is, food that has been artificially processed, such as polished rice, flour, white flour and its derivative foods, such as bread and biscuits.
The main reason for advocating the consumption of non-refined foods is that they are rich in dietary fiber, which is not easily digested by the human body, so it stays in the gastrointestinal tract for a long time, and it is easier to maintain blood sugar stability. And non-refined foods retain a more complete set of nutrients. It is recommended to have 200~300 grams of cereals and 50~100 grams of potatoes per day.
2. A small but sufficient amount of protein. Recommended for "seafood + vegetarian" mode. At the top of the protein pyramid is plant-based protein, which includes legumes such as soybeans and nuts, followed by fish, eggs and milk.
3. The source of fat is mainly plant-based. Fat here mainly refers to unsaturated fatty acids, mainly derived from vegetable oils and fish, such as sunflower oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, etc., to eat more, but the intake does not exceed 30 grams, that is, the amount of half an egg. And saturated fatty acids, the main source is mammals, should be eaten less.
