Dunkirk is a port city in northern France. It is bordered by the Strait of Dover (Pas-de-Calais).
At the beginning of the 4th century, it was a fishing village. At the beginning of the 11th century, missionaries built a church in the village and named it "Dunkirk". In the 16th and 17th centuries, wars were frequent. Three wars were badly damaged.
In May 1940, British troops and part of the French army were repulsed by the Germans and withdrew to Britain. In September 1944, the Allies captured it, and three-quarters of the houses were destroyed.
