On January 30th, Italian brand Campagnolo unveiled an improved version of the Bora WTO range, all of which feature a wider 23mm inner rim width. And a series of smaller details have been incorporated to reduce weight, with the lightest Bora Ultra WTO 35 wheelset reportedly weighing 1,285 grams. The series will have six wheelsets: Bora Ultra WTO 35, 45 and 60, as well as Bora WTO 35, 45 and 60.
The main unifying point between the Bora WTO and Ultra WTO ranges is the new C23 carbon rim shape, which has an internal rim width of 23mm. The carbon construction of the two series differs, with Campagnolo claiming that the Ultra WTO rims weigh 420 grams per set, while the WTO rims weigh 550 grams per set. According to Campagnolo, the wider rim "guarantees a larger surface where the tires are in contact with the ground, which is good for aerodynamics and trajectory control."
Campagnolo sticks to hook rims and supports tubeless and clincher tires. The rim is teardrop-shaped (when combined with tires), which Campagnolo says is aerodynamically optimised to accommodate "wide gravel tires and thinner road tires" from 25 to 48mm. Campagnolo specifically recommends using 28 to 35mm tires on Bora wheels.
Bora Ultra WTO borrows a lot of the technology from Hyperon Ultra wheels and goes beyond a single connection. The wheels are finished with Campagnolo's HULC (Handmade Ultralight Carbon Fiber) layup and C-LUX (Campagnolo Deluxe) finish.
The HULC structure orients the carbon fiber at a specific angle as it is laid out in the mold. The C-LUX finish gives the wheels a particularly smooth, mirror-like appearance that does not require painting.
Campagnolo continues to use its G3 lacing, in which seven sets of three-spoke strips are tied together at a 2:1 ratio. Campagnolo says the unique layout improves load-carrying capacity, minimizes weight, and reduces vibration and rim deformation.
The front hub shell is made of carbon fiber, a material that Campagnolo says can reduce weight and improve overall performance.
Both hubs rotate on Campagnolo's CULT (Ceramic Extreme Technology) ceramic bearings and are compatible with Center Lock disc brake rotors.
They also use Campagnolo's N3W Light hub, which first appeared on the Hyperon Ultra. It is claimed that excess material is removed from the traditional N3W hub, which improves the responsiveness of the wheels.
The Bora Ultra WTO features Aero Mo-Mag technology to improve aerodynamics. The oversized aluminum spoke joints are hidden inside the rim and can be operated from the outside using proprietary tools to adjust the wheel.
The Bora WTO wheelset uses technology from the Bora Ultra WTO lineup, but ditches the hidden spoke joints, HULC layups, and C-LUX rim finish.
The Bora WTO hub is made of aluminum and uses USB (Super Smooth Bearings), which still features ceramic balls but has a more traditional outer and inner rings. Bora WTO also uses a standard N3W base instead of an N3W Light.
While the wheels continue to use the G3 spoke lacing pattern, there are eight pairs of three-spoked instead of seven.
