Behind its abundance and prosperity, the ease of life in the world and the pursuit of noble quality will meet you through the millennium with the special exhibition of "Man Tingfang - Life in the Song Dynasty in Gold and Silverware" at Chengdu Museum.
From January 26 to April 15, 2024, the new exhibition will be open to the public free of charge in the temporary exhibition hall on the third floor of our museum. The exhibition is sponsored by Chengdu Museum, Yi County Cultural Relics Depository and Yi County Museum, and jointly organized by Sichuan Museum, Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, and Pengzhou Museum, bringing together more than 120 pieces / sets of gold and silver artifacts unearthed from the cellar of Dabeicheng in Yi County, Hebei Province and the gold and silver artifacts unearthed in Sichuan represented by the gold and silver ware of the Song Dynasty in Pengzhou.
Yi County, located in Baoding City, Hebei Province, was the capital of Yan during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, with a long history. In 1986, a number of Song Dynasty cellar gold and silver ware were unearthed in Dabeicheng, Yixian County, which has a huge quantity, complex categories, exquisite texture, and both Song and Liao styles, which is very rare.
Pengzhou, located in Sichuan Province, was the land of Shu in ancient times and was known as "Little Chengdu". In 1993, the largest Song Dynasty gold and silver cellar in southwest China was discovered so far, and its exquisite craftsmanship and elegant shape represent the highest level of gold and silver craftsmanship in the Song Dynasty.
One south and one north, although the artifacts of the two places are different, they jointly present the superb level of gold and silver craftsmanship and shape characteristics of the two Song dynasties, highlighting the fashion and aesthetic interest of life in the Song Dynasty. The exhibition outlines the elegance of the times with gold and silver, allowing regional cultural characteristics to prove and learn from each other in the magnificent and long Chinese civilization, and playing a cultural resonance from the depths of the national spirit in Chengdu, in the deep winter.

During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the ancients had mastered the technique of casting gold, and gold and silverware began to show its light. In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, gold and silver were decorated with bronze, and in the Han and Tang dynasties, with the prosperity of the empire and the high development of productive forces, the casting of gold and silver ware has been greatly developed, and the engraved silk is extremely magnificent. With the beautiful style and craftsmanship of the Song Dynasty, gold and silverware became popular among the people. From the court to the people, from the utensils of life to the hairpin ring jewelry, all kinds of states in the world are condensed on it, and it is frozen to this day.
In this exhibition, the first unit, "The Green Jade Case: Banquet and Drinking Life on the Table", is introduced from the elegant and beautifully decorated bowls, cups, cups and plates on the Song people's tables, reflecting the abundance of daily life. Chrysanthemum golden bowls, gardenia flower bowls, lotus-shaped silver cups, melon-shaped marigolds and other flowers, fruit-shaped utensils, placed on the table, such as flowers in full bloom, is the Song Dynasty people's preference for nature, the pursuit of naïve aesthetic embodiment;

Song Dynasty clothing, slim and fit, elegant and exquisite. Nearly 100 pieces of jewelry are buried in the cellar on the bank of Yishui, and the golden light flows, reflecting the pursuit of beauty and life by people thousands of years ago. In the second unit of the exhibition, "Nian Nujiao - The Golden Jade Pearl in the Makeup", hairpins, hairpins, buckles, belts, tails, earrings, ...... Or the shape is simple, or the decoration is exquisite, there are not only jade peacock peony gilt silver hairpins, plum blossom pattern gilt silver comb, gold wrapping and other women's makeup things, but also peach-shaped gilt silver belt, birds and lychee gold crown ornaments and other men's wear products. The fluttering clothes of the high-ranking families are gradually moving away with the dust and smoke of history, leaving these gold and silver ornaments, revealing the delicate and diverse appearances of life.

In the 100 years after the "Lanyuan Alliance", the Song-Liao border "gave birth and multiplied, cattle and sheep were wild, and the people who wore white did not know how to fight", and the people of Song and Liao were able to enjoy living in peace, and the cultural exchanges between ethnic groups became more and more profound. In the third section of the exhibition, "Fixing the Storm - Exchanges and Mutual Integration between Ethnic Groups", the gold and silver objects used as currency such as the Fuzhou Tongtianjie silver collar and the Yingzhou military treasury silver collar were exhibited as important media for political, economic and trade exchanges between the Song and Liao countries, and became an empirical evidence of the border trade and ethnic exchanges between the Song and Liao provinces. The sword-ring-style double phoenix pattern gold ornaments and crystal gourd beads have witnessed the interaction and integration of multiple cultures of Chinese civilization with the spread of Buddhism.
