90's New Year's Catch: Looking for the flavor of the year in memory

The flavor of the 90s

It was the eleventh day of the lunar month in 1995, and there was still some time before the Chinese New Year, so my father and I got up early, and I rode my bicycle with my father to the town to catch the New Year's fair. At that time, I was still a young man, and I was full of infinite expectations for the Chinese New Year.

Once in town, we parked our bikes in a small alley next to the bazaar and walked into the bazaar. The market is crowded with people and lively. The father was holding a plastic woven bag and greeting acquaintances as he walked.

We first came to a stall selling firecrackers, and my father bought some firecrackers, some of which were red and some were thunder, ready to be released during the Chinese New Year. I saw a kind of firecracker called "two kicks" on the stall and was very interested, so my father bought me a few and asked me to try them.

Next, we came to a candy stall with a variety of sweets, and my father bought several kinds of dough fruits such as ovens and fried ginger. We came to a stall selling meat, pork, mutton, beef, and so on. My father bought some pork and prepared it to go home for stir-frying and making dumplings.

Finally, we came to a stall selling Spring Festival couplets, there are all kinds of Spring Festival couplets, there are paper, cloth, flannel and so on. I saw a kind of Spring Festival couplets called "door gods", on which were painted two mighty door gods, which were very beautiful, so my father bought me a pair. We bought some other New Year's goods, such as melon seeds, peanuts, red dates, and so on.

After the New Year's fair, we returned with a full load. Back at home, my mother had already prepared lunch, and our family sat around the dining table, eating a hearty lunch, enjoying the joy of reunion. This lunch is simple, but it is full of home.

Now, it's 2024, and many years have passed since that time. However, whenever I recall the taste of the New Year's fair in that era, my heart is always full of emotion and nostalgia. At that time, although life was simple, people were full of enthusiasm and hope. Now, with the change of times, people's lifestyles and values are constantly changing, but those good memories will remain in my heart forever.
