The first generation Audi S8 (D2)

Audi introduced the Audi S8 4.2 quattro model to the European market in 1996. The car followed the naming convention of other high-performance Audi "S" models, such as the S6, derived from the Audi A6. In some markets, such as the UK, the Audi S8 is only available with an automatic transmission.

The first generation Audi S8 (D2)

Audi cleverly differentiates the S8 from the A8 on the outside, with solid aluminium mirror housings, chrome belt lines and lower front grille trim, polished twin exhaust pipes, and a refined "S8" badge. It is equipped with 14-way electrically adjustable and heated sports front seats with memory function and heated rear seats. The standard alloy wheels are 18-inch cast aluminum alloy "Avus" six-spoke wheels. After the mid-1999 facelift, 20-inch polished nine-spoke RS wheels became an option. In 2002, 18-inch nine-spoke RS wheels became standard on the model.

The first-generation Audi S8 (D2) engine

The D2 Series S8 is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 with a 335 hp upgraded engine with four valves per cylinder. From the end of 1999, Audi increased its design to 5 valves per cylinder, and the power was also increased to 355 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Since its introduction in 1996, a six-speed manual transmission has been fitted as standard on models for the European market. A sporty recalibrated version of the ZF 5HP24 five-speed electronic automatic transmission, released a year later, features a "Dynamic Shift Program" (DSP) feature and is the only transmission available on most other markets.

Anatomy of the first-generation Audi S8 (D2).

The sports suspension has been retuned to lower by 20mm, the spring rate has also increased by 30%, and the shock absorbers have increased compression damping by 40%. Speed-sensitive "servo-electronic" power steering is also standard.

The braking system uses Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and radially ventilated front brake discs. Since 2002, the upgraded Bosch 5.7 electronic stability system has been standard.

This generation of the S8 includes subtle details to distinguish it from the related A8 models. The trapezoidal "single-frame" grille features the characteristic vertical pillar details of the Audi "S model", which are highlighted on the chrome surface. The "S8" badge is posted on the front and rear of the vehicle, while the "V10" badge is posted on each of the front wings above the side repeater indicators.

The second-generation Audi S8 (D3) has an upturned spoiler at the rear

The rear boot lid contains a delicate rear spoiler, and the rear features four chrome-plated oval exhaust tailpipes. Adaptive xenon plus high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps include static turn signals and "rotating" dynamic turn signals. The daytime running lights are made up of five light-emitting diodes (LEDs) integrated into a shamrock-designed reflector that is integrated into the main headlamp housing.

Second-generation Audi S8 (D3) V10 engine

The D3 Series S8 is powered by a 5.2-liter all-aluminum alloy four-valve V10 petrol engine. This engine was Audi's first and is often mistakenly referred to as a derivative of the 5.0-liter V10 engine installed on the first-generation Lamborghini. The 5.2-litre V10 in this generation S8 is based on Audi's 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine. The second-generation Lamborghini Gallardo and its successor, the Lamborghini Huracán, are powered by the 5.2-liter engine of the Audi R8.

Second-generation Audi S8 (D3) ZF 6HP26-A61 six-speed electronic automatic transmission

The ZF 6HP26-A61 six-speed electronic automatic transmission is the only sport-optimized transmission with a "Dynamic Shift Program" (DSP) and "Sport" modes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The output is transmitted through Audi's four-wheel-drive fourth-generation all-wheel drive system, initially using a Torsen T-1 50:50 dynamic center differential, and from the 2007 to 2008 model years, using a Torsen T-3 asymmetrical dynamic center differential. The "default" torque distribution is 40% to the front axle and 60% to the rear axle. If road conditions change, the purely mechanical differential responds without delay, transferring up to 85 percent of the power to the rear wheels and up to 65 percent to the front wheels.

The second-generation Audi S8 (D3) chassis

The top speed of this generation S8 is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Tests have shown that the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is 5.1 seconds with 98# RON unleaded gasoline. The performance of this generation S8 is similar to that of Audi's top-of-the-line A8 L W12 model, although the W12 model is more expensive, with more torque and a longer wheelbase. But compared to the A8 L W12 model, the S8 has sportier mechanical features like a stiffer suspension system, larger wheels, and ceramic brakes. The shorter wheelbase and 10-cylinder engine save weight for better handling, but the Audi S8 still lags behind the A8 L W12 in acceleration time to 100 km/h.

The second-generation Audi S8 (D3) pays attention to the suspension system

The Audi S8 model, like the A8 model, has a multi-link suspension layout front and rear with pressurized air springs. However, for the S8 model, the spring-to-shock ratio is significantly stronger, while the suspension brackets have also been redesigned.

The second-generation Audi S8 (D3) braking system

The braking system consists of brake discs that are radially ventilated around the perimeter. The brake discs at the front have two-piston calipers painted in gloss black and single-piston sliding calipers at the rear, coupled to an electromechanical parking brake. Bosch ESP 5.7 (later upgraded to Bosch ESP 8.0) electronic stability control system with ABS, brake assist and electronic braking system. Available as an option, "Audi Ceramic" carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite brakes with radially ventilated and floating SGL carbon discs with anthracite grey painted twelve-piston fixed Brembo monobloc alloy calipers. Standard alloy wheels consist of 20-inch alloy wheels.
