This precious cultural relic from the 12th year of the Tang Dynasty (777) was donated by Lin Xiao, Chen Qin and his wife, and the Jinmotang Calligraphy Research Foundation. The stele body is engraved with regular script on all sides, and the ring engraves the seal character "Xiuliang Wu Xing Taishou Liu Wen Changxi Pavilion Record", and the font and penmanship style engraved by the stele are consistent with Yan Zhenqing's genuine calligraphy style. It belongs to the work of Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy style in the fully mature stage. The inscription of "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument" was written by the Tang Dynasty calligrapher Ren Huzhou Tai Punctuality, which was in his mature period, and it was also a calligraphy work that he never appeared.
Lin Xiao is the chairman and collector of the Jinmotang Calligraphy Research Foundation. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Zhejiang University in 1984, and during his studies at Zhejiang University, he often went to Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts to audit, and since then he has become a lifelong hobby with art. Lin Xiao has devoted himself to collecting for more than 20 years, involving Western oil paintings, ancient paintings and calligraphy, seals, bronzes and other fields, especially for the Ming Dynasty calligraphy. In addition to collecting, he has also devoted himself to the study of art history, and has published a number of research papers, such as "Re-appraising Zhu Yunming by Note-taking Method", "New Evidence of Chen Chun and Wang Pet Inheriting Zhu Yunming", "The Unsolved Mystery of Song Ke", "Zhu Yunming and Huang Lin's Friendship and Examination", etc.
Founded in 2013 by Lin Xiao and Chen Qin, the Hong Kong Kinktang Calligraphy Research Foundation is dedicated to promoting academic research in the history of calligraphy and related fields, and sponsors some research projects and academic conferences.
In the twelfth year of the Tang Dynasty (777), the first summer (i.e., April) was established. At this time, it was Yan Zhenqing's last year of assassination in Huzhou. Four months after the monument was erected, he bid farewell to Huzhou and returned to Chang'an to serve as the secretary of the Criminal Department.
Xiting, in the sixteenth year of Liang Tianjian of the Southern Dynasty (517), Taishou Liu Yun was built on the Tiaoxi River in Huzhou, and it was the place where the literati Yan gathered. It is in the west of Wuxing County, so it is called Xiting. Liu Xi's "Interpretation of Names" cloud: "Pavilion, stop, and people stop gathering." "More than two hundred years later, the West Pavilion is in dilapidation. Li Qing, the prince of the royal family, served as the commander of Wucheng County (775~777) and asked Yan Zhenqing to repair the West Pavilion. The West Pavilion is a "Water Pavilion", which is a pavilion on the Wuting Bridge of Yangzhou Slender West Lake, which belongs to the "Bridge Pavilion". Success, Yan Zhenqing went to the table to observe Li Han in western Zhejiang, and the imperial court issued an edict to commend Li Qing. Yan Zhenqing personally wrote this book "Liang Wu Xing Taishou Liu Yun Xiting Ji" to praise Li Qing's virtue and politics. Tang Dynasty magistrates have always had the tradition of building pavilions, according to Professor Xia Yan's statistics, there are more than 30 kinds of "pavilion records" in the Tang Dynasty. Standing in the pavilion in the Tang Dynasty, the "Pavilion Record" monument is generally a round head. This is the case with the "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument".
Only the upper half of the stele remains. The residual height is 112~133 cm. It is about 95.5 cm wide and 40 cm thick. Professor Xue Longchun speculated that the original height of the whole monument was about 270 centimeters. "Xiu Xi Pavilion Monument" in the upper part of the stele Yang stele Yin seal "Xiu Liang Wu Xing Taishou / Liu Wen Chang Xi Pavilion Record". The West Pavilion stands on the Tiaoxi, the stele is late in the Northern Song Dynasty because the bridge pavilion collapsed, and the "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument" fell into the river, so that it disappeared into oblivion. The full text of the inscription can be found in the fifth volume of the "Yan Lu Gongji" compiled by later generations (Qing Sanchang Wuzhai series of books), the text is slightly different from the original stone of the inscription, according to Guo Yongbing's research, such as the seventh line of the inscription "the heart of the question" and the "Yan Lu Gongji" compilation is mistaken for "the heart of the intermittent connection" and so on. In September 2019, the Art and Archaeology Museum of Zhejiang University opened, Lin Xiao, Chen Qin and his wife and the calligraphy research foundation of Jinmotang donated and exhibited.
Yan Zhenqing has been in Huzhou for five years, and has worked with many scribes such as Jiaoran, Lu Yu, and Zhang Zhihe. In the old days, Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy was only one month later than the "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument", and the "Li Xuanjing Monument" standing in Jurong Maoshan was handed down. It is a pity that the stele was broken in the seventh year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1137), and the flint was broken in the third year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1524), and it was gradually dispersed. After 1949, there was no stone left.
Nowadays, "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument" is the only surviving inscription of Yan Zhenqing from the Huzhou period. Yan Zhenqing was 69 years old at the time, and his calligraphy reached the realm of old people. The inscription still uses the common family method of Lu Gongshu stele, and is engraved on all sides. With the pen round strength, the words support the full grid, strong, broad, classic, graceful, masculine and big, a faction of the temple weather. In addition to the endowment factor of Lu Gong's mind, there is also his practical consideration of trying to write a large book and be profound, avoiding the practical considerations of small inscriptions, inconvenient to observe, easy to wear, and difficult to preserve for a long time. In the first year of the Tang Dynasty (760), Yan Zhenqing wrote to Tang Suzong when he wrote the "Begging Imperial Book of the World Liberation Pond Tablet": "The book before the edge is slightly finer, and I am afraid that it will be unbearable for a long time.......
Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty once praised: "Yan Lu Gongshu is beautiful and alone, and he has changed the ancient method, such as Du Zimei's poems, Gree Tianzhong, and the romance since the Han, Wei, Jin, and Song dynasties." Summarize the characteristics of Lu Gongshu's "Xiongxiu", and speak highly of Lu Gongshu's innovation and informality. Wang Shu of the Qing Dynasty also analyzed the innovation of Lu Gong, saying: "Since the Wei and Jin dynasties, the writers have mostly taken a posture with show strength and taken the momentum from the side. "Judging from the "Xiuxi Pavilion Monument", it is not a lie.
