Automatic license plate recognition is a pattern recognition technology that uses dynamic video or static images of vehicles to automatically identify license plate numbers and license plate colors. The system needs to have a high processing speed and an excellent algorithm to realize image acquisition and processing without losing frames. In order to perform license plate recognition, the following basic steps are required:

1. License plate positioning

In the natural environment, the background of the car image is complex and the lighting is uneven, and how to accurately determine the license plate area in the natural background is the key to the whole recognition process. The vertical projection method has a good effect on the character segmentation in the car image in the complex environment.

3. License plate character recognition

The main methods are based on template matching algorithm and artificial neural network algorithm. Based on the template matching algorithm, the segmented characters are first binary and their size is scaled to the size of the template in the character database, and then all the templates are matched, and the best match is selected as the result. There are two algorithms based on artificial neural networks: one is to extract the features of the characters first, and then use the obtained features to train the neural network allocator; Another method is to directly input the image into the network, and the network will automatically realize feature extraction until the recognition result is achieved.

In practical applications, the recognition rate of the license plate recognition system is also closely related to the quality of the license plate and the quality of the shooting. The quality of the license will be affected by various factors, such as rust, defacement, paint peeling, font fading, license plate obscured, license plate tilting, bright reflection, multi-license plate, fake license plate, etc.; The actual shooting process can also be affected by factors such as ambient brightness, shooting method, vehicle speed, and so on. These influencing factors reduce the recognition rate of license plate recognition to varying degrees, which is also the difficulty and challenge of the license plate recognition system.
