General Liu Zhen, the founding general of the People's Republic of China, recalled the siege of Huaiyin City

In that year, the news about the liberation of Huaiyin was published in the "Northern Jiangsu Daily".

In 1945, when our army's technology and equipment were at an inferior's advantage, due to the firm and correct implementation of Chairman Mao's strategy and tactics, it conquered the enemy's heavily defended Huaiyin City in one fell swoop. This battle was a successful precedent for the Third Division of the New Fourth Army in northern Jiangsu to shift from a long-term guerrilla war to a large-scale offensive battle. The revolutionary spirit of all the commanders and fighters who participated in the war at that time was not afraid of fatigue and sacrifice is exactly what we want to inherit and carry forward today.

One

On August 21, 1945, in the areas of Jiangba, Sanhe and Gaoliangjian on the east bank of Hongze Lake, the autumn was crisp and the sun was shining. In the villages, gongs and drums are clanging, and joyful songs are loud and loud. Although the commanders and fighters of our Third Division had gone on a five-day long march, as soon as they arrived at the resting place and saw the men, women, and children who welcomed them, they put down their backpacks, put aside their fatigue, and joined the local people in singing and dancing to warmly celebrate one major victory after another won by our army and people in northern Jiangsu after the Japanese invaders announced their surrender.

Several responsible comrades of our division headquarters were gathering around to discuss how to implement the Central China Bureau's order on cutting off the enemy's and puppet ties between Nanjing and Bengbu on the Jinpu Road, conquering the enemy's and puppet strongholds along the line, expanding the results of the battle to the south, and cooperating with the fraternal troops to attack Nanjing. It has also been learned that Li Xianzhou, an anti-communist general of the Kuomintang, is also leading his troops eastward in a vain attempt to deal with the stubbornness of northern Jiangsu and disrupt our liberated areas.

Decide on the work policy according to the actual situation. The division headquarters immediately reported to the higher authorities the situation of all parties facing the division, and put forward a proposal to first return to the division to resolve the stubborn enemy in Lianghuai and other places, consolidate and expand the liberated areas in northern Jiangsu, bring the two regions of central and northern Jiangsu together, and relieve worries about the rear, so that our army in northern Jiangsu can conduct large-scale mobile operations. Chairman Mao and the Yan'an General Headquarters quickly agreed to this suggestion and instructed our Third Division: "Quickly occupy the cities along the canal and the Kushichang River, so that the central Jiangsu, northern Jiangsu, Huaibei, and Huainan will be united." Commander Chen Yi, who was in Yan'an, also telegraphed to us: "The entire area east of Jinpu Road, north of the Yangtze River, south of Longhai Road, and on both sides of the canal should be divided into one piece, and all cities and towns should be occupied and all areas should be liberated." "

The instructions of Chairman Mao, the Central Military Commission, and the military chiefs have given us great encouragement. At an urgently convened meeting of the division's party committee, division commander and political commissar Huang Kecheng pointed out: "The Kuomintang must fight for every inch of our territory and gain every inch of profit, and we must follow the instructions of Chairman Mao and Commander Chen Yi and engage in a-for-tat confrontation with them! Isn't Li Xianzhou vigorously trying to support those puppet troops who have changed the name of the 'national army'? Well, for the time being, we will not confront Li Xianzhou head-on, but use a fierce iron fist to smash these 'black dogs' and 'two emperors' to pieces, so that Li Xianzhou, the anti-communist 'commander,' will not be able to gain anything. After careful discussions, the division headquarters made a specific plan to return to the division to first annihilate the remnants of the stubborn hypocrisy in northern Jiangsu. After reporting to the higher authorities for approval, the division's party committee decided: I (then commander of the Huai Naval Region, deputy commander of the 3rd Division, and commander of the 10th Brigade) will lead my subordinate to change the rear team of the division into the front team, and immediately return to the division, first capture Huaiyin City, a strategic point in northern Jiangsu, and destroy the defending enemy Pan Ganchen. After this decision was issued, the vast number of commanders and fighters applauded that there would be no need to run any more and that there would be a battle soon. In particular, the commanders and fighters of the new second regiment of Huaihai District, who acted together with the main force, were even more ecstatic. On the one hand, they were happy that they had another opportunity to fight and exercise, and on the other hand, they quickly killed the big traitor Pan Ganchen, which could relieve the pain of their hometown fathers and elders.

Two

At dawn on August 26, we marched north along the Hongze Lake embankment. The sound of horses' hooves was accompanied by the neat and powerful footsteps of the warriors, like a low and rapid war drum echoing in the ears. The dawn of dawn shone on the cheeks of the warriors, all of them were like little tigers, majestic and mighty. Both the commanders and the combatants were eager to grow wings and fly to Huaiyin City and smash the enemy in Huaiyin City with one punch.

Huaiyin is a historical city, the political, economic and cultural center of northern Jiangsu, a water and land transportation hub, and a strategic location. After the fall of Nanjing-Shanghai at the end of 1937, the Kuomintang Jiangsu Provincial Government moved here. In February 1939, the Kuomintang handed it over to the Japanese invaders without firing a single bullet, and from then on, it became an important place for the Japanese invaders to camp their troops and a cancer nailed to the base in northern Jiangsu. Over the past six years and more, we have "swept away" the enemy in our Huainan, Huaibei, northern Jiangsu, and central Soviet base areas, and used this as the center of our dredging. The 70,000 residents of the city were in dire straits, and hundreds of miles of innocent people were tragically ravaged. Ten days earlier, the Japanese emperor had announced his unconditional surrender, and the Japanese Nanbo Brigade had withdrawn to Haizhou. Now it is garrisoned by the 28th Division of the puppet army. The enemy counted more than 7,000 people from three regiments of the regular army, and more than 2,000 people from the Huaiyin Security Regiment and the Standing Brigade. After receiving the number of "28th Division of the Sixth Army of the National Revolutionary Army" given by Chiang Kai-shek, the puppet leader Pan Ganchen quickly carried out reorganization, and gathered the main force in the city to strengthen the defense: a large number of fortifications were built on the city wall, artillery towers were built around the city and on the city gates, bunkers were built at the main intersections in the city, deer and barbed wire fences were set up between the moat and the city wall, and the reactionary districts and township armed forces were cobbled together on the periphery of the city, and satellite strongholds were built to form a city wall defense that was more than ten miles long. We clearly expected that the attack on Huaiyin City would be an extremely difficult battle that had never been done before. Since the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, we have used a large number of guerrilla warfare and movement warfare. This is the first time for a fortified fortification above the county seat. However, we firmly believe that with the guidance of Chairman Mao's strategic and tactical thinking on the people's war, the heroic and resourceful fighting spirit of the vast number of commanders and fighters, and the all-out support of the local party and the masses in northern Jiangsu, we can win this battle with complete certainty. In order to ensure victory in this battle, through repeated research, it was determined that two steps should be taken:

The first step is to quickly sweep away the peripheral enemies, press forward step by step, and tightly surround the city;

The second step is to find out the situation, correctly establish the direction of the main attack and assist, choose a breakthrough, and use effective means to break through the strong fortifications and divide and annihilate the enemy in the city.

In the midst of the rapid advance, a dense burst of gunfire suddenly came from the northeast. Scouts report: The 4th Advance Detachment of our 10th Brigade has advanced to the Gaosheng Bridge, 5 kilometers south of Huaiyin City, and has engaged the enemy. I looked at my watch, and it was 6 o'clock in the morning of the 27th, and the gunfire became a stimulant for the rapid advance of the brigade.

The troops advanced in the morning mist, and the gunfire in front was sparse and indispensable. After 13 o'clock, four more detachments reported that after engaging fire with the enemy in the morning, they quickly eliminated the defenders of Gaosheng Bridge. Two battalions of the enemy were defended in the city, and they went out of the city to counterattack. After a fierce charge, the enemy was repulsed. Now I am rushing to the front line of Fujiazhuang, Jinjiaping, Liujiazhuang, and Wangjia Ancestral Hall!

In the battle to clear the enemy on the periphery, news of victory in the sweep of enemy satellite strongholds was constantly received. In particular, the main force of a detachment bravely repelled the enemy's three frantic counterattacks outside the West Gate, entered the gate of Xicheng, and by the evening of the 31st, I had swept away dozens of satellite strongholds such as Yangzhuang, Wangying, Xiba, and Wharf, tightened the encirclement, and trapped the enemy in a lonely city. The Huai'an and Liandong Guard Regiments, which served as reinforcements, also successfully eliminated the enemy at Banzha and cut off Huai'an's access to defend the enemy's reinforcements.

Under the leadership of the "Huaiyin Counteroffensive Committee," more than 50,000 people carrying flags of various colors that were "all for the victory of the front" and "all for the attack of the main force" rushed to Huaiyin from all directions, poured into the line of fire with bullets and bullets, and together with the main force and the local corps, constituted a sea of people's war.

Three

In order to give Pan Ganchen a chance to repent, I issued an ultimatum to him to lay down his arms and surrender. However, Pan Ganchen not only had no remorse, but barked "We are the victory of the curve to save the country". And threatened: Huaiyin city defense is "impregnable", let your New Fourth Army grow three heads and six arms, and don't want to fly into the city!

Pan Ganchen's arrogant and stubborn posture has further aroused the high fighting spirit of the vast number of our commanders and fighters.

In the past few days, letters of war and determination have flown like snowflakes in front of commanders at all levels. The slogan of "Open Huaiyin City, capture Pan Ganchen alive, and eliminate harm for the people of northern Jiangsu!" reverberated in the hearts of every commander and fighter.

We have mastered the enemy's troop disposition: the east gate is defended by the enemy's 111th Regiment, the south gate and its vicinity are defended by the enemy's 109th and 1st-0th regiments, the west gate is defended by the enemy's standing brigade, the north gate is defended by the enemy's security regiment, and the enemy's division headquarters is located in the Daotai Yamen on the east side of North Street. After conducting on-the-spot surveys by commanders at all levels, conducting accurate understanding of the enemy's situation and terrain, and meticulous analysis and study, we unanimously agreed that there were many houses on Huajie outside the east gate, which was convenient for us to engage the enemy in concealment; the south gate and west gate were open and low-lying, and the enemy defenders inside the city were relatively strong; the north gate was close to the canal, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack; and there were some buildings in the southeast and northwest corners of the city that could be used. Therefore, we decided on the following arrangements: with the east gate as the main direction of attack, with four detachments and two detachments; the south gate as the auxiliary direction, with the division's special service regiment and one detachment in charge; and one unit in the southeast and northwest of the city, with cameras breaking into the city in order to divide the enemy and annihilate each one.

Immediately after the specific arrangements were issued, we inspected the pre-war preparations of the various units.

On the position at the east gate, the commanders and fighters of the four detachments and the second detachment of the 10 th Brigade, which were responsible for the main attack, were in full swing. We and Peng Jingao, the leader of the four detachments, were in the hidden place of a bungalow, and saw several soldiers intently counting the layers of bricks on the city wall from the bottom up, and then measured the thickness of a city wall brick, and added the caulking between the layers of city wall bricks. In this situation, we couldn't help but praise in our hearts: "Haha, comrades, you have calculated the height of the city wall so accurately, it seems that you can use a long ladder to climb the city wall more certainly!"

Hearing our praise, an old soldier smiled and said, "Chief, the enemy has a foreign gun blockade. We'll have an earthen machine to deal with! This is also called going back and forth ---for-tat!"

On the battlefield, there was a burst of joyful laughter.

At the top of the staircase of a building, a dozen machine-gun firing pads made of bamboo, wood, and sacks of earth were about to be built, more than two meters above the city walls.

On the north side of the east gate, 16 cadres and soldiers and more than 60 former migrant workers fought in concealment for two days and nights, and the 55-meter-long tunnel dug was completed. A large coffin containing 500 catties of black and yellow explosives has been quietly sent through the tunnel to the enemy's artillery tower at the base of the city wall.

A soldier who was twisting the fuse whispered and said, "This big coffin has bloomed, but there is a good time to see!"

In order to make it easier for our troops to cross the river and attack the city, the former migrant workers of the Huaihai branch braved the rain day and night to dig a 30-mile waterway from Huaiyin to Huai'an, and were leading the water out of the moat.

In the command post of the special service regiment of the South Gate Foreign Division, regiment commander Zheng Guiqing was holding a meeting of cadres at and above the squad leader level to study and determine the combat grouping of commandos, red flag bearers, and demomen. A heated discussion began, and a young man with a Guanyun accent said categorically: "Please rest assured, the chief, we will definitely support Chairman Mao's victory and success in the Chongqing negotiations with the practical action of opening Huaiyin City!"

Zheng Guiqing told me: That young man is the newly promoted squad leader of the fifth squad of the Seventh Company, Xu Jiabiao, the combat hero of Funing, and the sharp knife squad that has just been determined is his squad. I nodded and said, "With such an iron warrior as a striker, we can break through even the hardest city!"

Near the positions at the west gate and the north gate, the soldiers and migrant workers of the Huaihai New Second Regiment, the Sheyang Guard Regiment, and the Huaiyin Guard Regiment were rushing to make a large number of pontoon bridges and ladders for climbing the city. The people who participated in the production were sweating and happy.

From field observations and a large number of reports, we know that all kinds of siege preparations are carried out day and night.

On the basis of ideological mobilization and material preparations, various units also selected similar terrain in connection with specific combat methods, conducted repeated drills and training for imminent combat, and sent small units to attack and harass the enemy many times at night, creating the false impression that we were attacking the city at night and causing the enemy to create a false impression.

The powerful political offensive unfolded even more violently as the siege was ready. The besieging troops used the principle of ship-mounted pulleys to raise huge moving placards in the firing line around the city walls. Propaganda slogans against the enemy, such as "Lay down your arms and return to the embrace of the people!" and "Stop working for Pan Ganchen!" were displayed in front of the enemy's eyes one by one like a foreign film. All around the city, all kinds of loudspeakers shouted one after another, and bags of propaganda materials with bows, arrows, and kites flew into the city one after another.

On the eve of the general offensive, our command once again issued an ultimatum to Pan Ganchen in the city on behalf of the party, government, military and people of northern Jiangsu, urging him to lay down his arms and surrender to the people. However, the stubborn Pan Ganchen not only refused to surrender, but also shot Zhang Laohan, who delivered a letter to him for me, in a frenzy. Our besieging soldiers and civilians are all filled with righteous indignation. "Swear to open Huaiyin City and resolutely destroy Pan Ganchen!" This steel oath, like the roar of thunder, roared outside the city wall, like a raging fire, burning in the chest of every commander and fighter!

Four

At dawn on the 6th of September, the overcast sky was drizzling. The cannons of our army hidden around Huaiyin City roared in unison, and even the earthen cannons of the brave Wang Fengshan of the Huaihai militia also made a loud rumbling sound on the position outside the north gate.

We walked out of the command post and came to the artillery position outside the east gate. I saw that the artillery gate of the fourth detachment and the second detachment was bombarding the east gate tower with heavy artillery fire. In the flash, we vaguely saw that the turrets erected on both sides of the city gate tower, like a vicious wild dog sticking out two sharp teeth, tightly blocked the way of our army's advance. "Destroy it, and we must not allow this vicious dog to block the way of our army's advance during the general attack!" the artillerymen calmly and quickly opened fire one cannon after another. I saw the broken bricks and tiles, with the billowing smoke, rising into the sky.

The enemy, thinking that we were about to enter the city, also bombarded the outside of the city with their cannons.

Is the general offensive really about to begin?

The enemy always makes miscalculations. Since the siege of the city, the enemy is most worried about our surprise attack and siege at night, and every night, they will increase their posts and guard strictly, and lighting equipment is also placed in many areas, especially at dawn and dusk, and the security is even stricter. On the contrary, during the day, especially around two o'clock in the afternoon, there is some slackness. In view of this important situation, the command decided to put the general attack at two o'clock in the afternoon, and the cunning enemy did not expect that we would have to pick them up in broad daylight.

In order to continue to confuse the enemy, throughout the morning our artillery fire was sometimes tight, sometimes loose, sometimes sparse, sometimes dense. The enemy waited for a long time, but did not see any other action from us, and slowly relaxed. However, it is precisely at such a moment that the time for the general offensive is approaching!

We saw through the binoculars: The commanders and fighters of my assault mission were all like cannonballs that were about to be discharged, and as soon as the signal for the general attack sounded, they immediately rushed out!

"Ring ring, ring!" Suddenly, the phone on the table rang urgently! After listening to it, it turned out to be a report from Zheng Guiqing, the head of the South Gate Position: Because the trolley carrying explosives was destroyed by the enemy in the process of advancing, the target was discovered by the enemy and requested to launch an attack in advance. After a little research, we agreed with him.

At this time, the defenders of the south gate were like wild beasts, shouting and shooting wildly, and guns and grenades poured down next to stones and bricks. The first batch of the sharp knife squad rushed up and fell, and the second batch went up and fell again. The battle is fierce!

At this time, "Boom!" There was a loud bang, shaking the whole city. The four detachments that attacked the east gate succeeded in the weight blasting in the northeast corner of the city!

We see through the telescope that billowing smoke rises from the center of the earth into the sky.

The machine guns on the various positions roared like a flash flood, and the loud sound of the charge horn rolled in the sound of gunfire.

All commandos, red flag bearers, bombardiers, and demomen leaped forward one by one, striving to be the first to plant the red flag in Huaiyin City!

In the command post, news of the victorious advance of the troops was constantly coming.

In the northeast corner of the city, an enemy artillery tower was blown up into the sky, and a gap of more than seven meters wide was blown open in the city wall, and a platoon of defending the enemy was all buried under the city wall. Zeng Jialiang, the leader of the second company and the fifth squad of the first battalion of our four detachments, held high the red flag, followed the ladder, like a flying arrow full of bows, and shot towards the city, and the first bright red flag suddenly fluttered high at the east gate. At the same time, there was also squad leader Zhang of the second class of the fourth company who climbed the city wall.

The brave men of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Fourth Detachment, in the loud sound of the trumpet of the charge, surged towards the breach like a huge wave and rolled up to the head of the city! The enemy guarding near the gate of the city frantically counterattacked, and the dense bullets swept over like raindrops, in a vain attempt to stop our troops from breaking into the city.

A counterattack will not save them from defeat. Under the leadership of company commander Zhang Changyi, all the heroes of the fourth company of our second battalion broke into the city in only five minutes, and the grenades like hail flew towards the enemy group one after another, blowing up the enemy's flesh and blood and corpses everywhere. The enemy's counterattack was repulsed. Zhang Changyi led his whole company of soldiers, braved the fierce guns and bullets of the surrounding enemies, desperately plunged into the back street of Watergate, and rushed westward!

They swept away the enemy all the way like a whirlwind, and the puppet security regiment that tried to resist was also beaten by them to the ground, and corpses were scattered everywhere. The enemy guarding the intersection of West Avenue raised their hands and surrendered, except for a few who were so frightened that they rushed to the puppet division headquarters.

Then, Zhang Changyi led his comrades-in-arms, guided by a barber who was familiar with the situation, and rushed straight to the headquarters of the puppet 28th Division......

At the same time as the four detachments broke through the northeast city wall, the artillery of the detachment under the command of the detachment leader Wang Fengyu opened fire fiercely, and quickly blasted open a section of the city wall in the southeast of the city, and the assault team poured into the city like a tide.

On the position at the south gate, the enemy's firepower was too fierce, and Song Chuanhai, the commander of the third battalion of the special service regiment, died honorably. The main forces of the regiment quickly joined the breakthrough of one team and rushed forward in depth together.

The siege troops of the West Gate were the Huaihai New Second Regiment and the Sheyang Guard Regiment. After they launched a charge, the commander of the fifth company of the second battalion of the sharp knife company of the Sheyang Guard Regiment died, and the second platoon commander Li Yunlong immediately acted as the commander, quickly cleared the breakthrough and left the enemy, rushed into the enemy's training battalion headquarters, and captured alive the commander of the enemy's training battalion, "Zhao Laohu." At the same time, he urged one of the enemy's trumpeters and forced him to confess the enemy's trumpet. Li Yunlong, a young man who had once served as a trumpeter, had seized the enemy's trumpet, held his head high, puffed out his cheeks, and blew the enemy's rallying trumpet! The sound of the trumpet gathered the scattered "tiger battalions." In this way, all the officers and men of the training battalion, known as the "Tiger Battalion," were taken prisoner.

After the general attack was launched, the Huaiyin Guard Regiment, which was responsible for attacking the North Gate, a commando team composed of more than a dozen Communist Party members, skillfully evaded the enemy's machine gun fire and rushed to the North Gate Tower by virtue of the piles and piers of the North Gate Canal Bridge that had been burned by the enemy. The first ladder was interrupted by the enemy, and a second ladder was erected. Braving the enemy's firepower, they bravely climbed the tower, eliminated the defenders on the tower, and cooperated with the main force to encircle and annihilate the enemy in the west of the city.

The four detachments that bravely rushed to the depth and killed the rapid development of the four detachments came with good news: "The enemy's division headquarters has been destroyed, and the division commander Pan Ganchen has been killed on the battlefield. "It turned out that when Zhang Changyi, the commander of the first battalion and the second company of the fourth detachment, rushed to the enemy division headquarters with his soldiers, other brother companies also arrived one after another. Seeing that the situation was not good, the enemy sentry hurriedly fired a shot into the air, pulled out his legs and ran back. A hundred and ten puppet troops rushed out of it, and when they saw our army rushing towards them, they hurried down and set up two machine guns at the door to shoot at us. The second squad leader of the fourth company threw two grenades violently, blowing up the enemy machine gunners. The platoon leader took advantage of the situation to lead the assault group to break through the gate.

Zhang Changyi and a soldier rushed into a house, only to see a fat-headed, big-eared guy throwing a tantrum over the phone. The barber immediately recognized him as Pan Ganchen. Zhang Changyi raised his gun and shouted: "Pan Ganchen, raise your hands!" Pan Ganchen removed his hand from the telephone and was about to pull out his gun to resist, when Zhang Changyi pulled the trigger with his hand, and a bullet ended his dog's life! This traitor, whose hands were stained with the blood of the people of northern Jiangsu, finally came to a deserved end.

At the same moment, in another room of the enemy's division headquarters, Liu Zilin, deputy of the fourth company of the fourth detachment, grabbed Liu Shaokun, chief of staff of the enemy division, and ordered him: "Call and order all regiments to surrender!"

Liu Shaokun trembled and picked up the microphone: "Hey! xx ?...... Order, stop resisting ......"

At 15:30 a.m., the remnants of the enemy, seeing that the resistance had become hopeless, obediently laid down their arms and raised their hands in surrender. A small number of stubborn enemies tried to break through from the northwest, but they were also intercepted and annihilated by the Sheyang Guard Regiment and the Huaihai New Second Regiment. In this battle, more than 8,000 enemy officers and soldiers were captured.

The red flag of victory flutters in the wind on the upper floors of Huaiyin City and on the tall buildings!

Huaiyin City has been conquered, and Huaiyin City has been liberated!

The ancient city of Huaiyin, which had been in the hands of the enemy for six years and seven months, returned to the embrace of the people. Inside and outside the city, there were smiling faces everywhere, singing everywhere, and it became a sea of joy.

Tens of thousands of people, who have endured the pain of being trampled by iron hooves for a long time, and today they have regained the sunshine and been liberated, how can they not emit joy in their hearts!

The local party, government, and the masses of the people organized a consolation team, holding high the red flag, beating gongs and drums, and bringing many fat pigs, eggs, vermicelli, and other consolation goods, which were transported to the city from outside Huaiyin City in an endless stream to comfort their own soldiers.

Commander Chen Yi sent a commendation telegram from Yan'an: "The battle of Huaiyin relied on the courage of our commanders and fighters to break into the enemy's pseudo-fortified city defense stronghold in a short period of time, kill the enemy chieftain, liberate Huaiyin City, and make our northern Jiangsu, central Jiangsu, Huainan, and Huaibei one piece, which is very gratifying." He still hoped to continue to expand the results of the battle and to extend condolences to the wounded commanders and fighters. "The people's condolences and the commendation of the army commander have given me great encouragement to the commanders and fighters who participated in the war.

Our local party, government, and people's organizations held a congratulatory meeting in Chengnan Park. At the meeting, a telegram of commendation from Commander Chen Yi and a congratulatory telegram from his brother troops were read out, and the order of the division headquarters was announced: The four detachments of the 10 th Brigade first attacked Huaiyin City, developed rapidly, suffered few casualties, and captured a large amount, which played a decisive role in the victory of the battle, and awarded the detachment the glorious title of "Qingjiang Unit." The 2nd Company of the 1st Battalion and the 4th Company of the 2nd Battalion, which served as the main assault mission of the detachment, were awarded the glorious title of "Qingjiang Combat Model Company". Zeng Jialiang, the leader of the fifth squad of the second company, and Zhang XX, the second squad leader of the fourth company, were brave and tenacious in the battle, and they were the first to enter the city, and were awarded the title of "Huaiyin Battle Hero", and each recorded a special merit. The two classes were awarded the "Huaiyin Combat Model Class", and each recorded a collective meritorious service. Zhang Changyi, the commander of the fourth company, was witty and brave, personally led the assault team to insert into the command post of the enemy division, played an important role in the victory of the battle, and was awarded the title of "lonely hero" and recorded a special meritorious service. The Sheyang Guard Regiment fought bravely in the battle, had a hard work style, and greatly improved its combat effectiveness, and decided to report to the Central Military Commission for approval to be promoted to the main force and reorganized it into the 23rd Regiment of the Eighth Brigade of the Third Division of the New Fourth Army. The 5th and 6th Companies of the regiment were awarded the title of "Qingjiang Combat Model Company".

Although the division's special service regiment suffered heavy casualties in the battle, it was brave and tenacious, not afraid of sacrifice, pinned down the enemy's forces, and contributed to the capture of Huaiyin City. Xu Jiabiao, the leader of the fifth squad of the seventh company of the regiment, was seriously wounded when he first landed in the city, but he still continued to insist on fighting, and blocked the enemy's machine gun hole with his own body to cover the assault troops' brave landing on the city, and was posthumously regarded as the "Huaiyin Battle Hero". In order to commemorate and carry forward the revolutionary heroic spirit of Comrade Xu Jiabiao, the division party committee and the local party committee decided to name the south gate of Huaiyin City as "Jiabiao Gate" and the class where Xu Jiabiao was in before his death as "Jiabiao Class".

After the Zhujie meeting, we bid farewell to the fathers, brothers, and sisters of Huaiyin City, went to carry out the new tasks assigned by our superiors, marched to the southeast, and quickly surrounded Huai'an City, where the puppet and stubborn brigade commander Wu Duzi was entrenched.
