In fact, before the birth of the Japanese-style 86-type license plate (fifth-generation license plate), the mainland's automobile management system had a history of 4 generations of license plates (counted since the liberation). Among them, the fourth-generation license plate (Type 73) issued between 1973 and 1986 can be seen from time to time in TV and television works that reflect the reform and opening up.
The civilian version of the 73-style license plate, the background color is the same as the current one, which is blue, but the province and region code is presented in the form of all numbers, plus the next 5 digits, and the whole license plate is composed of 7 digits, which is quite similar to the form of the third generation, but the font has been changed.
Interestingly, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126 series, which left the factory between 1979 and 1991, happened to go through the iteration cycle of China's fourth-generation (1973-1986) and fifth-generation (1986-1992) license plates.
For example, a 1986 W126 (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126 560SEL) photographed below has a Type 73 civilian license plate, but it is unknown whether it is equipped with the original car, and I think it is more likely to be "no".
