Especially in the early stage of the all-out war of resistance, there was no hope at all. But in these days of the most suffering, a battle broke out that gave the Chinese people the courage to fight to the end, and that was the Battle of Taierzhuang.
Why is he an unprecedented victory, and what is the background of his outbreak?
Since the outbreak of the Lugou Bridge Incident, the defeat in the Battle of Songhu, the sorrow of the 300,000 compatriots killed in the Nanjing Massacre, and the rate of loss of land close to one city a day have all told every Chinese the bad news that the country is about to die.
And the Japanese army, having occupied Nanjing and Jinan, once again formulated a plan for the rapid destruction of China. The last time they had made a plan to destroy China in three months, they were completely bankrupt in the Battle of Songhu, and this time they were even more whimsical.
As far as the Japanese army was concerned, in order to open up the north-south communication line and connect the battlefield of aggression between the north and the south, they decided to use Nanjing and Jinan as the base camp of this war of aggression against China, and mobilized the Japanese army from the north and south to attack Xuzhou along the Tianjin-Pudong railway from the north and south.
And the most critical place in this battle is in Taierzhuang. Taierzhuang is located in the south of Zaozhuang, one of the borders of Shandong and Jiangsu, the gateway of Shandong, the north gate of Xuzhou, and the last barrier to defend Xuzhou.
From the perspective of historical origin, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, one of the largest canals in the world, encompasses the entire territory of Taierzhuang, which can really be described as the hub of the Sulu region. If Japan wants to win the battle, this area must and must be captured.
On the eve of the outbreak of the Battle of Taierzhuang, the occurrence of the Chihuai Resistance Battle and the Jining and Wenshang Attack Battles contributed to the final victory.
The Chi-Huai Blockade Battle broke the Japanese army's original strategic plan of attacking from the north to the south, forcing them to change their strategy and instead defend the south and attack the north.

The Japanese army also invested about 50,000 troops to participate in the war, and this force was composed of the 5th and 10th divisions of the extremely elite Second Army of the Japanese army, which showed extremely strong combat effectiveness in the past and brought extremely deep suffering to the Chinese people.
Against this background, armies on both sides are making final preparations, reinforcing their positions, stockpiling supplies, and adjusting tactics, all in order to achieve victory in the upcoming battle.
As the saying goes, "if you want to do a good job, you must first sharpen your tools", and adequate preparation before doing anything is necessary, not to mention a large-scale war related to the fortunes of the country. Before the battle began, the top brass on both sides had made the most thorough plans.
The commander of the Japanese Second Army, with the approval of the Supreme Command, decided to send the 10th Division of the army to destroy the Chinese defenders north of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, in order to prepare for further wars of aggression in the future.
Linyi and Tengxian happened to be the core points of southern Shandong, and if the Japanese army wanted to open up the north-south communication line from northern Shandong to achieve their original strategic goal, the first step was to take these two places, and then break through to the two key hubs of Taierzhuang and Hanzhuang. In late February 1938, the Japanese army marched south from Weifang, Shandong, first breaking through Yishui and then falling into Rizhao. The Japanese army pointed all the way to Linyi, and the shadow of war hung over the heads of every Chinese.
Li Zongren, the commander-in-chief of this campaign, sent the 40th Army under the Third Army to Linyi to deploy defenses, and in order to achieve the purpose of luring the enemy into depth, the 40th Army needed to resist the frontal impact of the Japanese Fifth Division.
Pang Bingxun, the commander of the 40th Army, led all the officers and men under his command to put up the most resolute resistance to the Japanese army in the spirit of "people are in the city", but the Japanese army's firepower was too fierce, and the 40th Army was about to face a desperate situation of running out of ammunition and food.
According to the original plan, Li Zongren needed to send an army to support the 40th Army under Pang Bingxun, but the battlefield situation at that time, Li Zongren's subordinates could only dispatch the 59th Army of General Zhang Zizhong.
Li Zongren was very hesitant, but he had no choice but to do so, and the reason why a battle-hardened marshal like him was very hesitant happened during the Central Plains War five or six years ago.
When it comes to General Zhang Zizhong, everyone in the Chinese people knows about it, but few people know that Pang Bingxun and General Zhang Zizhong had a feud.
The two of them met as early as the warlord melee of the Republic of China, and Pang Bingxun and Zhang Zizhong were both generals under Feng Yuxiang of the former Northwest Army, and they fought together for the interests of the Northwest Army.
During the Central Plains War in 1930, both of them were originally under the orders of Feng Yuxiang and President Chiang to confront each other, but during the war, Pang Bingxun secretly connected with the Central Army and secretly surrendered to the Nanjing Nationalist Government represented by Chiang.
It would have been fine if it had been just like this, but Pang Bingxun, according to the instructions of Nanjing, led his troops to carry out a fierce sneak attack on Zhang Zizhong's division headquarters during the battle.
As a result of this battle, Zhang Zizhong's troops suffered an unprecedented blow, and he himself was seriously wounded in the battle, almost losing his own life. Such a great feud is remembered by Zhang Zizhong to this day, but the current situation can only allow the troops led by Zhang Zizhong to go to the rescue.
Originally, when Pang Bingxun heard that this rescue would be carried out by Zhang Zizhong's troops, he was already hopeless. There was also the command of the 5th Division of the Japanese Army, but they did so because of distance.
General Zhang Zizhong's 59th Army was originally operating along the Huai River valley before receiving the order, and it was still a considerable distance from Linyi, the center of the battlefield.
According to the normal pace of marching, even if the 59th Army set off immediately, by the time they arrived at the city of Linyi, Pang Bingxun's troops would have been defeated by the Japanese army.
The Japanese army was also based on such an idea, and did not take General Zhang Zizhong's 59th Army as a thing at all. They planned to defeat Pang Bingxun's 40th Army again under Linyi City after defeating Pang Bingxun's 40th Army, so they nicknamed the 59th Army "Dead Army" before the war.
But what everyone didn't expect was that after receiving Li Zongren's order, General Zhang Zizhong didn't care about personal grievances at all, and the whole army was drawn on the same day, aiming directly at the Fifth Division of the Japanese Army.
According to the Japanese army's estimates, even the fastest 59th Army would take 3 days to rush from Yixian to Linyi, and by the time they arrived, the Japanese army had already burned and looted in Linyi.
But what shocked everyone even more was that General Zhang Zizhong, after abandoning his personal grudges, rushed to Linyi at an unbelievable speed in just one day and one night.
After rushing to Linyi, the 59th Army descended from the back of the Japanese Fifth Division like a divine soldier. After seeing the reinforcements coming, Pang Bingxun also led all the soldiers in the position to charge towards the Japanese camp.
In the shock and fear of the Japanese army, General Zhang Zizhong and Pang Bingxun "made dumplings" for the Japanese army in an unprecedented way. From March 14th to the end of the 18th, the pride of the two Chinese armies in the decisive battle of Linyi dealt a devastating blow to the Japanese Fifth Division, so that the Fifth Division had no ability to fight again and fled in a hurry.
It is worth mentioning that due to the funeral tradition in Japan, the Japanese army usually brought back all the bodies of the exterminated Japanese soldiers. According to Li Zongren's arrangement, the Taierzhuang position was defended by the entire Second Army led by Sun Lianzhong, while the Twentieth Army lured the enemy in Lanling and the northwest Yungu area, waiting for an opportunity to move.
On March 24, under the opening of aircraft, tanks and artillery, the Japanese army launched the most fierce attack on Taierzhuang with extremely strong firepower, and the general offensive began, but no one knew whether it was a general attack by China or a general attack by the Japanese army.
The position held at the north gate of Taierzhuang had the 1st Battalion of the 186th Regiment and even almost all of them recruits, who still resisted stubbornly under the iron hooves of the Japanese army. These poor rural children even engaged in a fierce white-knuckle battle with the physically strong Japanese soldiers outside the North Gate, and it is heart-wrenching that it is often only three Chinese soldiers who can fight with bayonets to fight a Japanese soldier, and in the end almost all of them are killed.
That night, a small group of Japanese troops broke through the small north gate, and Wang Zhen's team personally picked up machine guns and fired at the Japanese invaders. The Japanese army entered the city many times, and was desperately recaptured by Chinese soldiers many times.
It was not until after three days and three nights of bloody fighting that the Japanese army finally completely invaded Taierzhuang, and fierce street fighting began. Under the superior firepower of the Japanese army, the Japanese army gradually conquered two-thirds of the entire territory of Taierzhuang, is the defeat going to be repeated?
The Chinese defenders who were holding on to the south of Taierzhuang carried out the order of "holding the position even if there was only one person left", and one by one the young people were not afraid of the strong enemy, and put up the most resolute resistance to the invading Japanese invaders, so that the Japanese army could no longer move forward.
It was at this moment that the counteroffensive of the Chinese army began. On April 3, with the issuance of the order for the general decisive battle, all the Chinese troops involved in the war counterattacked the Japanese army, which had been invincible in the past.
In the street fighting, although the Japanese fought desperately, they briefly occupied most of the streets. However, the Chinese army launched a rampart battle, and gradually forced the Japanese army out of Taierzhuang.
After 4 days of fierce fighting, the Chinese army dealt the heaviest blow to the Seya detachment and the Sakamoto detachment. The Japanese army abandoned their armor and fled, and since then, the Chinese army has defended their homeland with a final victory.
The Battle of Taierzhuang was one of China's greatest victories since the beginning of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, in which the Chinese army wiped out about 10,000 Japanese combat forces at the cost of 50,000 casualties.
