Another said: "The head is like a camel, the eyes are like a ghost, the ears are like a cow, the horns are like a deer, the neck is like a snake, the belly is like a mirage, the scales are like a carp, the claws are like an eagle, and the palm is like a tiger."

It is precisely because the dragon has brought together the images of a variety of strange beasts in the history of its image formation, so at the same time as the formation and development of the dragon image, some strange beast images are also developing, and in a certain aspect, they combine a certain image of the dragon, so some people associate the two and become the so-called dragon son.

There has always been a saying in the mainland that "a dragon gives birth to nine sons", but the so-called "dragon gives birth to nine sons" does not mean that the dragon happens to give birth to nine dragons, because in traditional Chinese culture, nine means a lot, just like the Qing Dynasty scholar Wang Zhong said: "Where one or two cannot be exhausted, then about three, in order to see the more, and if three cannot be exhausted, then about nine." "Therefore, nine is an imaginary number, and the dragon gave birth to nine sons is a lot.

The saying that dragons give birth to nine sons has been around for a long time, but it has not been determined which animals are among the dragons, and various versions have appeared in the Ming and Qing classics alone.

The first person in the Ming Dynasty to record strange beasts in his writings was the scholar Lu Rong, but Lu Rong talked about "the different names of ancient artifacts", and did not say that it was the different names of dragons. He wrote in the "Shuyuan Miscellaneous": "Bixi, which resembles a turtle and is good at carrying weight, is used to carry stone tablets. Chiwen resembles a beast and is hopeful, so it stands on the corner of the house. In vain, it resembles a dragon and is small, has a good roar, and has divine power, so it hangs on the bell. The charter resembles a beast and is a prisoner, so it stands on the prison door. Gluttony (taotie) is good water, so the bridge is erected. The lizard resembles a beast, a ghost head, and is fishy, so it is used on the handle of the knife. Manquan is similar to a dragon and has a good nature, so it is used on the ridge of the temple. Chihu (chihu) resembles a dragon in shape, and has a good character, so it stands on the inscription. Jinni resembles a lion and has a good sex and smokes, so it stands on the lid of the incense burner. The shape of the pepper is similar to a snail, and the sex is good and the mouth is closed, so it stands on the door, and now it is called "drummed". The shape of the frog (daoduo) is similar to a dragon and small, and the sex is good and dangerous, so it stands on the protection of decay. Out of "Classic of Mountains and Seas" and "Naturalist Chronicles". Lu Rong recorded a total of 14 kinds of "different names of ancient artifacts", but did not say that it was a dragon, and pointed out that these statements came from the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" and "Naturalist Records".

The earliest record of the nine sons of the dragon appeared in the "Huailu Tang Collection" by Li Dongyang in the Ming Dynasty. According to Li Dongyang's "Huailu Tang Collection": "In the past, during the Hongzhi (Ming Xiaozong year), Tailing (Ming Xiaozong Zhu Youji) tried to order the Zhongguan to ask the name of the nine sons of Longsheng, because he often saw it in miscellaneous books when he was young, and he could not be hastily (promoted), and he did not know what to do. He also inquired about the external performance of Liu Yuan in the Ministry of Officials, and the results came to the book, and the book recorded this sentence, but he did not know where to come from, because he was reinstated. ”

Li Dongyang's reply to Ming Xiaozong's answer was: " The dragon is born nine sons do not become dragons, each has its own good: prison cow, good music, the beast carved on the head of the Huqin is its posthumous image; Yazi, the life is good to kill, the dragon swallowing the mouth on the handle of the knife is its posthumous image; mocking the wind, the life is dangerous, the horned beast of the temple is its posthumous image; Pu Lao, the life is good, the beast button on the bell is its posthumous image; Suanni, the life is good to sit, the Buddha lion is its posthumous image; the tyrant, the life is good to bear, the stele beast is its posthumous image; bi'an, the life is good lawsuit, the lion head on the prison door is its posthumous image; the negative tun (fuxi), the life is good, the dragon on both sides of the stele is his posthumous image; the kiss (chiwen), the life is easy to swallow, the head of the beast on the ridge of the temple is its posthumous image. At this point, this public case finally came to an end due to the curiosity of the "True Dragon Son". However, Li Dongyang later remembered: "Yu has another place to carry the weight of the eight insects Xia (baxia), and the stone beast under the monument is today." The descriptions are different, and they are just naturalists. The eight insects are suspected of being the former hegemon. It can be seen that Li Dongyang is not very sure about the issue of the dragon giving birth to nine sons. But in any case, this is the first official statement that the dragon gave birth to nine sons.

Some of Li Dongyang's previous Ming notes, all the records found about the name, shape, and characteristics of the dragon, are basically from Lu Rong's "Shuyuan Miscellaneous". In the classics of the Ming and Qing dynasties, in addition to the "Huailu Tang Collection", there are also Yang Shen's "Sheng'an Outer Collection", Hu Shi's "True Pearl Boat", Li Xu's "The Old Man's Writing of the Ring Nunnery", Jiao Hong's "Yutang Congyu", Xie Yingqian's "Five Miscellaneous Quirks", Xu Yingqiu's "Yuzhitang Talks", Shen Defu's "Wanli Ye Gets Compiled", Tan Qian's "Zaolin Miscellaneous", Gao Shiqi's "Tianlu Zhiyu" and so on.

In the thirtieth year of Wanli, Jinshi Xie Xianqian recorded in "Five Miscellaneous Works": "The dragon gave birth to nine sons: Pu Prison is good at singing, the prison cow is good at sounding, the kiss is good to swallow, the mocking wind is dangerous, the eyes are easy to kill, the cunning is good at writing, the fierce is good at lawsuits, the fierce is good at sitting, and the domineering is good at losing." In addition to the nine kinds of "Naturalist", there are: the charter is a good prisoner, the gluttony is good water, the lizard is fishy, the barbarian is good for wind and rain, the tiger is good for Wencai, the golden lion is good for smoke, the pepper is good for closing the mouth, the oyster is good for danger, the fish is good for fire, Jin Wu is not sleeping, and they are all types of dragons. Gai Long is sexually lewd and has sex in everything, so he has many ears. ”

Xu Yingqiu, a Jinshi in the forty-fourth year of Wanli, recorded in "Yuzhitang Talks": " The dragon gives birth to nine sons and does not become a dragon, each has its own good: prison cow, good music in life, the beast carved on the head of the Huqin is its posthumous image; the eye, the life is good to kill, the dragon swallowing mouth on the handle of the knife is its posthumous image; the mocking wind, the life is dangerous, the horn of the temple is its posthumous image; Pu Lao, the life is good, the beast button on the bell is its posthumous image; the fierce and sitting, the Buddha lion is its posthumous image; the tyrant, the life is good to bear, the stele beast is its posthumous image; the fierce man, the lion on the prison door is its posthumous image; the negative stump, the life is good, the dragon on both sides of the monument is his posthumous image; the kiss, the life is easy to swallow, the temple ridge beast is his posthumous image。 ”

Shen Defu recorded in "Wanli Ye Ed.": "Changsha Li Wenzheng Gong (Li Dongyang) was in the cabinet, and Xiaozong suddenly went down to the imperial palace and asked for the details of "Nine Sons of Longsheng". Wen Zheng said to the clouds: 'His son Pu Prison is good at singing, now it is the bell on the button, the prisoner ox is good at sound, now it is the head of the Huqin carved beast, the eyes are easy to kill, now it is the sword swallowing mouth, the mocking wind is dangerous, now it is the palace beast, the fierce is good to sit, now it is the Buddha riding the elephant (image), the bully is good to carry the weight, now it is the stele and the stone, the fierce is good at litigating, now it is the head of the prison to suppress, the negative piece is good, now it is the meandering on both sides of the stele, and the kiss is easy to swallow, and now it is the head of the beast on the spine of the temple. At the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, people talked about Qian in the collection "Zaolin Miscellaneous" and wrote in "Twist": "The dragon gave birth to nine sons: Pu Prison is good to sing, the prisoner cow is good to sound, the kiss is easy to swallow, the mocking wind is dangerous, the eyes are easy to kill, the scumbags are good at writing, the fierce is good at lawsuits, the fierce is good at sitting, and the domineering is good at losing." Tan Qian's book also quoted the "Naturalist Chronicles" and said: "The charter is good for prisoners, gluttonous and watery, crickets are fishy, barbarians are good for wind and rain, tigers are good for literature, Jin Yi is good for smoke, Jiaotu is good for closing mouths, crickets are good for danger, Aoyu is good for fire, Jinwu is not sleeping, and all dragons are also species." ”

Gao Shiqi of the Qing Dynasty recorded in "Tianlu Zhiyu": " It is said that there are nine kinds of dragons, each has its own good, one is said to be a turtle, it is like a turtle, it is good to bear a weight, and the turtle falls under the stone tablet today; the second is said to be a mantis kiss, the shape is like a beast, and the sex is good, and the head of the beast on the house is also; the third is said to be a prison, the shape is like a dragon and small, the sex is good and roaring, and the current bell is a superior star; the fourth is said to be a fierce carn, like a tiger has power, so it stands at the prison gate; the fifth is gluttonous, good to eat, so it stands in the dinggai; the sixth is said to be a worm, the sex is good to water, so it stands on the bridge pillar; the seventh is said to be a jaw, the sex is good to kill, so it stands in the knife ring; the eighth is said to be a golden lion, the shape is like a lion, like a good fireworks, so it stands in the incense burner; the ninth is said to be a pepper map, the shape is like a snail, and the sex is good and closed, so it stands in the door。 ”

In addition, according to folklore, "mantis", "犼", "pixiu", "tuolong", "silkworm", "pack" and "deer", "inverted scale fish" and so on are also among the dragons. "Turtle head" belongs to a kind of dragon without horns; "犼", some people say that he is the son of the dragon king, and has the habit of watching; "Pixiu", some say that Pixiu is born of a dragon; "鼍龙", in ancient times, it was called 鼍 (tuó), and the folk are commonly known as "earth dragon" or "pig dragon", that is, the Yangtze crocodile; "silkworm", silkworm is the dragon spirit; "Pack" and "Lynx", the divine beast, the dragon species, God uses to guard the treasure, the person who carries the treasure, so the lord enters, the rampant righteousness, so the lord comes out, each with the sex messenger, so Xianke observes his duties; "inverted scale fish" , out of the top of Longtan Mountain in the southeast of Ningguta Boat City, the scales are all upside down, and it is said that it is a dragon species.

Among them, from the "Shuyuan Miscellaneous Records" are "Pu Lao" (i.e., vain), "Xuanqi" (i.e., Jin Qi), "Baxia (Worm Eight Insect Xia)" (i.e., Xuanjiao), "Xuan" (i.e., Charter), and "Chi Kiss" (i.e., Kiss), although the names and functions of these animals have changed somewhat, but they refer to the same animal, and there is no objection today. In addition, although the functions of "Jianwei" and "lizard", "mocking wind" and "cricket", "negative" and "tiger", and "chim" and "crowfish" have the same function, they do not refer to the same animal. "Gluttony", "Cockroach", "Pepper Map", "Beast Kiss", and "Jinwu" also do not appear in the "Huailu Tang Collection".

Yang Shen remembered that "the sting" is good for bearing, the "kiss" is good for bearing, the "puff" is good for yelling, the "pun" is powerful, the "gluttony" is good for eating, the "grub" is good for water, the "japriot" is good for killing, the "golden lion" is good for smoking, and the "pepper map" is good for closing. In addition, Yang Shen also recorded a "Jin Wu", who is sexually psychic and does not sleep. The version remembered by Yang Shen is said to be derived from Li Dongyang, but it is not exactly the same, among which there is no "prison cow", "mocking wind", and "negative tuan" in Li Dongyang's version, and "gluttony", "worm pit vid", and "pepper picture", there are two different names but refer to the same animal, namely "Baxia" and "Zhuang", "Xuanyi" and "Jinyi".

Hu Shisuo recorded as: "Prison Cow" is good music, "Jianxi" knife handle dragon swallows head, "Mocking Wind" is dangerous, "Pu Prison" is good to sing, "Vicious" is good to sit, "Baxia" is good to bear, "Fierce" is good at litigation, "Cunning" is good at writing, and "Kiss" is easy to swallow. Among them, except for the difference between "Zang Tuan" and the "negative Tuan" recorded in Li Dongyang's version, the others are the same as Li Dongyang.

Li Xu recorded it as Lu Rong and Li Dongyang's version, but in it, "lizard" was written as "cricket". Jiao Hong's record is Yang Shen's version. Xie Jianqian's record is the same as that of Hu Shi's version except for the order. In addition, Xie also quoted a version, which is the version in Zhang Hua's "Naturalist Chronicles" of the Jin Dynasty: "Charter" is a good prisoner, "gluttonous" is good water, "lizard" is fishy, "barbarian" is good wind and rain, "tiger" is good Wencai, "Jinyi" is good smoke, "Jiaotu" is good to close his mouth, "cricket" is good to be dangerous, "Aoyu" is good to fire, and "Jinwu" is not sleeping. These ten animals are the same as ten of the fourteen different names of the artifacts recorded by Lu Rong, and Lu Rong also said that some of the different names of the artifacts he described are from the "Naturalist Chronicles", which shows that this is an older version.

Xu Yingqiu is recorded as Li Dongyang's version. Shen Defu is recorded as Li Dongyang's version and the "Naturalist's Chronicles" version, but "lizard" is also written as "cricket", and Shen Defu also describes several special species, namely "unicorn", "elephant", "dragon ju", "jiao", and even Han Gaozu, that is, the emperor, and "Ji hang". Tan Qian is recorded as the Xie Jian version and the "Naturalist" version. Gao Shiqi recorded it as Yang Shen's version.

To sum up, regardless of the order of each dragon, we find that there are "Prison Ox", "Jianzhu", "Mocking Wind", "Pu Lao" (in vain), "Fox" (Jin Li), "Zang Xuan" (Baxia, Worm Eight Insect Xia), "Raccoon Niu" (Charter), "Negative Dog", "Cockroach Kiss" (Worm Kiss), "Worm Viper", "Jiaotu", "Gluttony", "Lizard" (Cricket), "Cockroach", "Tiger", "Frog", "Fish", "Beast Kiss", "Jinwu", "Qilin", "Elephant", "Dragon Horse", "Jiao", "Emperor". Thirty-three species (or more) such as "Ji Hang", "Cockroach", "Pixiu", "Dragon", "Silkworm", "Pack", "Lynx", "Inverted Scale Fish" and other 33 species (or more) have entered the list of dragons, all of which can be called dragons.
