Paraffin wax is a product of solid crystallization extracted from petroleum. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons, i.e. hydrocarbons of different molecular weights. It is mainly composed of n-alkanes, in addition to some solid isomeric alkanes, naphthalkanes and a small amount of aromatic hydrocarbons. The number of carbon atoms of commercial paraffin wax is generally 22~36, the molecular weight range is 360~540, and the boiling point range is 300~550 degrees Celsius. As the molecular weight, boiling point and melting point of paraffin wax increase, the composition of the n-alkanes decreases and the isoparaffins and solid naphthenics increase. The chemical composition of paraffin wax in different crude oils is also different.
Yellow paraffin wax or badly refined wax needs attention!
Yellow paraffin wax or poorly refined wax, still contains trace amounts of non-hydrocarbon components, these complex sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen machine compounds, although only contain trace amounts, but the stability of paraffin wax is greatly reduced. Some of the thick ring aromatic hydrocarbons in the small amount of aromatics contained in paraffin wax are harmful to the human body, so as paraffin waxes used in the food industry and medicine, it is necessary to reduce the thick cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons below the specified indicators before they are allowed to be used.
In the laboratory analysis of some paraffin waxes with mass spectrometer, the chemical composition data of each fraction divided by the number of carbon atoms in the molecule show that the fractions with a small number of carbon atoms in the molecule are all ok-alkanes, and as the number of carbon atoms increases, the content of isoparaffins and naphthenics increases, and the aromatic hydrocarbons in the wax are only present in the fractions with high carbon atomic numbers. Therefore, when the refining conditions are the same, in the general commodity paraffin wax, the content of thick ring aromatic hydrocarbons in the low grade paraffin wax is lower than that of the high grade wax.
