How to choose an antipyretic for adults
Common antipyretics for adults are ibuprofen and acetaminophen,
Note the following when taking it on your own:
(1) When the body temperature exceeds 38.5°C, you can consider taking antipyretics. Combined with physical cooling measures (warm water or alcohol bath, use of antipyretic patches, etc.), the results are better.
(2) Acetaminophen is generally taken once every 4~6 hours, one tablet each time, and no more than 4 times in 24 hours. Ibuprofen extended-release capsules are taken once in the morning and once in the evening. Do not alternate or combine acetaminophen with ibuprofen, and do not take antipyretics with cold medicine combinations that contain antipyretics.
(3) After taking acetaminophen for 4 hours, the body temperature is still above 38.5°C, you can consider taking it again, if the body temperature drops below 38.5°C, you can stop taking it.
(4) The following four groups of people should use ibuprofen with caution: (1) those with a history of severe coronary heart disease and heart failure, (2) those with a history of severe peptic ulcer and gastrointestinal bleeding, (3) those who need to use a combination of antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulant drugs for the treatment of chronic diseases, and (4) those with severe renal insufficiency.
(5) Drink plenty of water after taking antipyretics to avoid prostration caused by excessive sweating.
When an acute respiratory infection occurs, self-administration of antipyretics is convenient and effective, but it is also important to recognize that fever is not a disease in itself, but a symptom, and antipyretics only improve symptoms by lowering body temperature. If the fever persists or symptoms recur, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly to find out the cause of the fever and treat the cause.
How to choose an antipyretic for children
Antipyretics that children can use include acetaminophen and ibuprofen
Children over 2 months of age with a temperature of ≥ 38.2°C and significant discomfort can be treated with antipyretics. Children aged 2~6 months can choose acetaminophen, and children over 6 months old can choose ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Take antipyretic drugs no more than 4 times every 24 hours, and the interval between two doses should not be less than 4 hours.
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are not recommended at the same time or alternately, and antipyretics should not be used at the same time as combination cold medicines that contain antipyretics.
