According to @CCTV International News, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency, the crater at the summit of Mount Sakurajima Minamidake in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu Prefecture, Japan, began to erupt at 3:52 pm local time on January 9, and volcanic smoke rose from the crater to about 1,200 meters into the air.
It is said that this is the first eruption of the Sakurajima volcano this year. The volcano erupted 89 times last year.
There are five levels of alert for volcanic eruptions in Japan, with level 5 being the highest. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has maintained the volcano alert level at 3 on Sakurajima and restricted access to the mountain.
Sakurajima is an active volcanic island located in Kagoshima Bay, covering an area of 77 square kilometers and consisting of three volcanic bodies: Mt. Kita, Mt. Nakadake, and Mt. Minami.
