On January 7, the final of the 2nd Science and Technology Academy Competition (hereinafter referred to as the "Competition") of the China Graduate Rural Revitalization Science and Technology Strong Agriculture + Innovation Competition "Pinduoduo Cup" was successfully concluded in Dali, Yunnan.

With the theme of "Solving People's Livelihood and Governing Culture", this competition evaluates the fruitful results achieved by the Science and Technology Academy in the past year in going deep into agriculture and rural areas, aiming at practical problems in production and life, and helping rural revitalization through scientific and technological innovation, application innovation, industrial innovation and other ways.

After fierce competition, nearly 200 teachers and students from 46 teams from 22 colleges and universities across the country finally stood out and won the first prize in the end, Chu Cheng Science and Technology Academy of China Agricultural University, Chongqing Tongliang Vegetable Science and Technology Academy of Southwest University, Gushengcun Science and Technology Academy of China Agricultural University, Guangxi Xingning Fufeng Chicken Science and Technology Academy of Guangxi University, and Jiangsu Rugao Rice Science and Technology Institute of Nanjing Agricultural University stood out and won the first prize. In addition, 13 teams, including Danling Orange Science and Technology Academy of Southwest University and Pinghe Pomelo Science and Technology Academy of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, won the second prize, and the remaining 28 teams won the third prize.

Founded in 2009 by Zhang Fusuo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at China Agricultural University, and his team in Quzhou County, Hebei Province, the Science and Technology Academy has expanded to more than 1,000 villages in 31 provinces across the country in the past 15 years. With the increase in the number of participating institutions, teachers and students, and the outstanding achievements of production, education and research, the Science and Technology Academy has now gone abroad and been promoted to 8 countries in Laos and Africa. At the same time, the service model of the science and technology courtyard has also developed from the 1.0 model of helping one family at the beginning to the 3.0 model of comprehensively helping rural revitalization through technology empowerment and talent support.

In 2020, as one of the special events of the China Graduate Rural Revitalization Science and Technology Strong Agriculture + Innovation Competition, the Science and Technology Academy Competition was absorbed as the theme event of the China Graduate Innovation Practice Series Competition. This year is the second time that the Science and Technology Academy Competition has been held, and it is also the second consecutive time that Pinduoduo has been the supporter of the competition to help college students communicate and compete in the art of rejuvenating agriculture.

Promote learning through competition, and young people strive to become new farmers

As an innovative practice competition, the competition provides a stage for students of national science and technology academies to learn from each other's agricultural skills, share the achievements of rural production, education and research, and show their youthful demeanor.

Relying on Chu Cheng's more than 20 years of development history and high market recognition, Chu Cheng Science and Technology Academy can be regarded as one of the "popular" teams in this competition. When he spoke on the stage, Tielin's voice was loud and full of energy, which came from his confidence in scientific research results.

21 years ago, Chu Shijian contracted the sugarcane field at the eastern foot of the middle section of Ailao Mountain to plant oranges, and worked hard to create the "Chu Orange" brand. However, piebald fruit and cracked fruit have always been the most serious problems that plague the quality of Chu oranges. Under the strict selection requirements, the yield rate of Chu Cheng was once only 54%, and the rest could only be disposed of or destroyed at a low price, and the direct economic loss in 2022 alone would be as high as 26 million yuan.

After testing and comparison, Chu Cheng Science and Technology Courtyard focused on the cause of the wind. In order to solve these problems, they set up a high net on the outside of the farmland, and sprayed pesticides on the fruits to form a protective film; in order to reduce the rate of cracked fruits, they also specially supplemented potassium and calcium, and in the past, a tree produced 200 fruits, and about 20 or 30 cracked fruits, but after some "treatment" by the science and technology courtyard, now it has dropped to two or three. Xiaoyuan also built a quality and climate prediction model, which according to Quan Tielin, can predict fruit quality 45 days in advance.

Chu orange represents the very high management level of China's fruit planting industry, and its success has attracted many orange producing areas to follow suit, but it has been difficult to match so far. According to Quan Tielin, Chu Cheng has built a training center to teach technology to surrounding farmers who are interested in orange planting for free, so that everyone can go from "not being able to learn" to "being able to learn". She herself has gradually established a love for agriculture in the process of taking root in the front line, communicating with farmers, and explaining technology.

In addition to the roadshow defense, the on-site display of the competition also enhanced the opportunity for students from different primary schools to exchange Xi. The participating teams either built models to present technical systems, or put out planted vegetables and fruits for the judges to taste, and the scene was particularly lively.

In order to show the results of the improvement of breeding technology, the participating students specially boiled fresh and delicious chicken soup, which conquered the stomachs of the judges and students on the scene. Jiangsu Rugao Rice Science and Technology Courtyard directly cooked raw rice into cooked rice, with round and full particles and sweet aroma, attracting the judges to stop.

It is worth mentioning that this competition has added an on-site mutual evaluation link, that is, each participating team selects a team member to evaluate the performance of the rest of the participating teams, and Li Xinyue from Heilongjiang Wuchang Rice Science and Technology Academy is one of the mutual evaluators. A courtyard, several bungalows, and three or two students are the "standard" of the science and technology courtyard. Although the scale is small, it plays a huge role in serving the "three rural" and revitalizing the countryside. Its service model largely determines the effect of helping farmers and benefiting farmers.

After decades of development, the science and technology courtyard model has been continuously upgraded from the initial help to one family. Located in Wanqiao Town, Dali City, Gusheng Village Science and Technology Courtyard is the first science and technology courtyard to move towards the "3.0+" version. In 2021, Academician Zhang Fusuo of China Agricultural University led the organization of more than 50 experts and scholars across the country to conduct in-depth research on agricultural non-point source pollution in the Erhai River Basin, and found that the sources of non-point source pollution are unclear, the soil nitrogen and phosphorus surplus is too high, and the output value of planting is not high.

The following year, the Gusheng Village Science and Technology Courtyard was officially unveiled. Zhang Fusuo and his team of teachers and students have been stationed here for a long time, on the one hand, to provide local villagers with zero distance, zero time difference, zero threshold, zero cost "four zero" services, on the other hand, to visit and investigate the utilization of local resources, and seek a solution to the problem of non-point source pollution in Erhai Lake.

In order to win the battle for water resources protection in the Erhai River Basin, Zhang Fusuo specially invited experts in agricultural non-point source pollution control to be project specialists and lead the team to overcome relevant difficulties. Getting up in the early morning and braving the rain to collect water samples in the fields and streams has become the normal work of teachers and students in the Science and Technology Academy of Gusheng Village.

After more than a year of unremitting efforts, the team initially identified the source of non-point source pollution, and established an accurate analysis and systematic treatment model of non-point source pollution sources, laying the foundation for subsequent treatment work.

Since its establishment, the Gusheng Village Science and Technology Academy has comprehensively contributed to the revitalization of local talents, organizations, industries, culture and ecology, and realized the transformation of Erhai Lake protection and farmers' income increase from going in the opposite direction to moving in the same direction. Behind this is the integration of multiple forces, including industrial integration, discipline integration, industry-university-research integration and so on.

In fact, cross-industry and multi-subject collaboration to promote rural revitalization is becoming the development direction of the national science and technology institute.

Taking Chongqing Tongliang Vegetable Science and Technology Institute as an example, it has explored a new model of taking the industrialization consortium as the starting point and multi-subject participation in the development of agriculture. On the R&D side, the Science and Technology Institute is responsible for analyzing the problems and creating a green production model for the whole vegetable industry chain; on the sales side, it will cooperate with the government, universities, agricultural enterprises, e-commerce platforms and other entities to broaden the sales path and improve the income of vegetable owners.

According to reports, after the promotion of the new model, only one crop of pepper will increase by 953 yuan per mu in the season, and the income will increase by 9.53 million yuan according to the promotion area of 10,000 mu.

"Arming" farmers with science and technology to promote increased production and income

Technology and talent are the key factors restricting rural development. While helping farmers solve problems, the Science and Technology Academy has also set up training classes, upgrading from "teaching people to fish" to "teaching people to fish", and accelerating rural revitalization by cultivating "science and technology farmers".

Zhao Zeru is a well-known "soil expert" in Danling County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province, not only won the championship of the first Danling Ignorant Fire Planting Technology Competition, but his son Zhao Gang also participated in the competition in 2021 and won the title of "King of Fruits".

Next door to Zhao Zeruo Park is the Danling Orange Science and Technology Courtyard. In 2021, Zhang Lijun, who first entered the courtyard, always took the initiative to greet Zhao Zeru in order to learn more about the local situation in Danling. Ask him questions and answer them, but there is a clear sense of distance. Zhang Lijun recalled.

With the passage of time in the small courtyard, the acidic soil improvement work that Zhang Lijun is responsible for has begun to show results, and her relationship with Zhao Zeru is also getting closer. He would take the initiative to say hello and exchange planting experiences, "Why don't your leaves turn yellow?" "Why is the sweetness of your fruit so stable?" and so on. Zhang Lijun not only answered carefully, but also gave Zhao Zeru a package of fertilizer to try out, helping him gradually upgrade from an experience stream farmer to a technology stream farmer.

Now Zhao Zeru treats Zhang Lijun like an old friend, and will always invite her to eat at home when she adds vegetables, chatting for a few hours, and will take the initiative to help take care of the orchard when she goes back to school.

Lai Guoyong, located in Banzi Town, Pinghe County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, is now also a "science and technology farmer". In 2019, the listing of Pinghe Guanxi Pomelo Science and Technology Courtyard brought scientific pomelo planting technology to the local area. However, it is not easy to get farmers to accept the small courtyard plan, not only because there is a language barrier, but also because the effect of the plan is not guaranteed. The students of the Science and Technology Academy gave the special organic fertilizer for soil improvement to farmers for free, and Lai Guoyong became the first batch of people to "eat crabs".

The effect test of the new fertilizer came out quickly, not only did the fruit grow well, the leaves were fat and green, the yield did not decrease, and the money for fertilization was also saved, which made Lai Guoyong completely convinced the students in the small courtyard. He began to act as a bridge between the science and technology institute and the farmers, striving to be a Hokkien "translator" when the students went to the village to promote organic fertilizer, and used practical experience to help build trust between the two sides. Sometimes, when the students were taking soil for analysis, Lai Guoyong, a stonemason, offered to help go up the mountain to dig the soil. With the help of the Science and Technology Academy, the fruits of the Lai brothers are not worried about selling, and all of them were booked by buyers last year, and the price of a single catty significantly exceeded the same period last year.

It is reported that the courtyard has brought out more than 20 "science and technology farmers" like Lai Guoyong to promote the development of local pomelo planting industry through farmers teaching farmers and leading households from household to household.

Like the Danling Orange Science and Technology Courtyard and the Pinghe Guanxi Grapefruit Science and Technology Courtyard, there are not a few small courtyards that use the talent transfer model to promote the popularization of technology. At the closing ceremony of the competition, the representatives of the participating students released the action initiative of "taking root in the village and the farmhouse, chasing the dream of rural revitalization" to the National Science and Technology Academy, and the students of the small school said that they will be unswerving, firm in their ideals and beliefs, take root in the earth, cultivate love for agriculture, seek knowledge and be good at learning, temper their agricultural skills, stand up and take responsibility, and contribute to the strength of youth.
