A new handheld gaming console called MSI Claw has leaked online with quite impressive hardware information. Once available sometime this year, it looks like this upcoming device will challenge the Steam Deck.
On the second anniversary of its launch, Valve's popular handheld console is now eyeing several high-profile competitors. One of Steam Deck's competitors is the Asus Rog Ally, which debuted in June 2023. Lenovo jumped into the race for handheld gaming PCs back in October with the Legion Go device.
On January 4, Taiwanese tech giant MSI teased itself as a Steam Deck competitor, strongly suggesting that its portable gaming system would be unveiled at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Just a few hours after the trailer was released, an official promotional flyer provided by a user depicting the upcoming device appeared online. According to the leaked images, the upcoming handheld will be called the MSI Claw and will have a rather aggressive look that is somewhat reminiscent of the Asus Rog Ally, except that the color will be black instead of white.
According to the apparent Geekbench profile of the device that appeared online on January 5, the model number of the MSI Claw is A1M. Leaked benchmark results suggest that the handheld will offer twice as much RAM as the Steam Deck and feature a more powerful CPU in the form of an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H.
While the leaked list of specs isn't complete, the main takeaway is that the MSI Claw will ostensibly offer more powerful hardware than Valve, but at the cost of battery life. That said, the CPU of choice runs at 28 watts, which is quite energy-efficient, but still well above the thermal design power of the Steam Deck processor's 15W.
The leaked promotional poster also shows that MSI plans to offer a chance to get Claws for free later this year to some lucky consumers who purchase some of its products, such as the company's latest line of gaming laptops. There is no indication that this special giveaway will be available outside of Taiwan or even Chinese mainland. However, the handheld console itself seems destined for a global release, and MSI seems to be planning to announce the device at CES 2024, which kicks off on January 9.
