There is a famous dumpling brand in the mainland: "Wan Chai Pier". The founder of Wan Chai Ferry Pier is Zang Jianhe, and behind her founding this brand, there is actually a difficult experience that few people know about.
When she was young, Zang Jianhe had a good lover, and she thought that she would live a happy married life in the future. But after getting married, because she did not give birth to a son, her husband cruelly abandoned her and her daughter.
But Zang Jianhe did not collapse, she strongly led her two daughters to embark on the road of entrepreneurship, and finally created a business legend in Wan Chai Pier.
So, how did Zang Jian and this strong woman make Wan Chai Pier bigger and stronger, and what kind of legendary life did she have?
The source of this article is from the official media (China Economic Weekly), published on February 12, 2019, but in order to improve the readability of the article, the details may be edited, please read sensibly, for reference only!
Born in poverty, I met a scumbag
Zang Jianhe was born in 1945 in a small village in Zhucheng County, Shandong Province, her father died young, leaving her alone, her sister and mother.
At that time, many peasants were oppressed by the landlords, and they did not have enough food and clothing all day long. This is the case for families with strong labor, not to mention Zang Jian and the three orphans and widows.
Zang Jian and his mother are very strong people, and she is determined to raise her two daughters to adulthood no matter how hard it is.
But the only source of food for the family is an acre of wasteland carved out in front of the house, and the mother and daughter can only survive on a little food from the field.
Later, the People's Republic of China was founded, and the oppressed toiling masses were finally liberated. Everyone cheered, and the peasants were given their own land.
Seeing that the life of the family is slowly improving, the mother and daughter are very happy. But when Zang Jianhe was 14 years old, his hometown suffered a natural disaster that had not been encountered for decades, so the family of three went all the way to Qingdao by begging to seek a way to survive.
After arriving in Qingdao, Zang Jianhe's mother lived on the street with a good needlework to sew clothes for others to support the mother and daughter.
In order to make the family live a better life, Zang Jianhe stopped going to school early. She went to the hospital to work as a nurse for patients, and Zang Jianhe, who had been smart and capable since childhood, quickly found a job taking care of patients.
In the hospital, 14-year-old Zang Jian has done all kinds of hard work, but she never feels tired, Zang Jianhe is very sensible, and she thinks that it is a proud thing to be able to support a family with her mother.
In this way, Zang Jianhe has been working hard in the hospital, and her work level is very high, and she is loved by many people. At the age of 18, Zang Jianhe's delicate and generous appearance became the object of many people's pursuit.
This year, a Thai-Chinese doctor came to the hospital, and the two often came into contact because of work, and over time, Zang Jianhe had a good impression of this doctor, and this doctor also had the same feeling.
After going back and forth, the two fell in love, but many people are not optimistic about this relationship, thinking that the different nationalities of the two are destined to have no good results. Some people also advised Zang Jianhe: This doctor is not even a Chinese national, be careful that he has deceived you!
But Zang Jianhe didn't care about this, she recognized that this doctor would be good to her for the rest of her life. After more than a year of love, Zang Jianhe married a doctor. In the two years after marriage, Zang Jianhe gave birth to two healthy and lovely daughters for her husband.
Just as Zang Jianhe was immersed in a happy life, her husband suddenly told her that there was an urgent matter at home in Thailand that needed to be dealt with and needed to go back. Because Zang Jianhe did not have a passport, she could not go abroad, and she told her husband that she would always wait for him to come back in China.
But what Zang Jianhe didn't expect was that he had to wait for three years. Every day and night, she looked forward to her husband's return, but she did not wait for a few phone calls from him for three years.
In 1977, Zang Jianhe got a Thai passport, and she decided to take her two daughters to Thailand to find her husband.
According to the address her husband had previously left her, she came to her husband's home in Thailand. She didn't expect her husband's family to be very wealthy, and Zang Jianhe saw a magnificent Thai-style building with maids coming in and out.
But Zang Jianhe didn't want to see all this, she just wanted to find her husband as soon as possible. Eventually, she found her husband, but he was accompanied by another woman and a young boy.
Seeing her arrival, her husband was very surprised, and her husband impatiently pulled Zang Jianhe aside to explain the current situation. It turned out that when her husband had just returned to China, her mother was very dissatisfied when she learned that Zang Jian had not given birth to a son.
Polygamy is allowed in Thailand, and at the strong request of his mother, Zang Jianhe's husband actually married a wife and had children!
This was a big blow to her, and her husband even let her and her daughter stay there first, and wait a while. The depressed Zang Jianhe had no choice but to do this, in her husband's house, her mother-in-law did not have a good face for Zang Jianhe, and she scolded her two daughters.
Zang Jianhe's strong personality couldn't stand this kind of thing at all, she looked at her husband who was silent on the side, and understood that this marriage could not be maintained.
So she broke up with her husband and took her two daughters on the plane back to China.
Hard work
When the plane docked in Hong Kong, Zang decided to take his daughter off the plane.
Because she was already disheartened at that time, she felt the same everywhere, in addition, Zang Jianhe had heard that there were many development opportunities in Hong Kong, and as a self-reliant woman, Zang Jianhe wanted to make a career.
Because they had no money, the mother and daughter had to rent a four-square-meter hut, which was dim and damp, and there were no windows.
When he first arrived in Hong Kong, Zang Jianhe was very uncomfortable, and in order for his family to survive, Zang Jianhe had to work several jobs a day. She worked as a dishwasher, a car washer, and a nurse, and when she was a dishwasher, she accidentally sprained her waist.
After an examination in the hospital, the doctor found that Zang Jianhe not only suffered a waist injury, but also diabetes, and her physical discomfort no longer allowed her to continue to work outside.
But even then, she refused government assistance. Because her mother taught her since she was a child: freeze to death at the windward station, starve to death and do not bend down.
No matter how hard she lives, she is not willing to accept the sympathy of others. Under the education of Zang Jianhe, the two daughters have also developed self-reliant personalities.
Later, at the suggestion of a friend, Zang Jianhe made his own small cart and sold dumplings at the Wan Chai Pier in Hong Kong.
Zang Jianhe has been making dumplings with his mother since he was a child, and the dumplings she made are beautiful and delicious, Zang Jianhe is the first stall at the dock, and the latest to close the stall, and the days are very hard every day.
At that time, Hong Kong did not have a subway, and many people would have a meal while waiting for the boat at the pier. Zang Jianhe's dumplings are not only delicious but also cheap, which attracts many customers.
When I first set up the stall, life was very hard, and Zang Jianhe had to go out on time every day. The two daughters are very sensible and help their mother with work almost every day.
In the cold winter, the mother and daughter never fell for a day. The mother and daughter all had their hands cracked wide from the cold, but the mother and daughter never complained.
Zang Jianhe attaches great importance to the hygiene and quality of dumplings, and whenever a customer proposes improvements, she will spare no effort to improve them. In the end, Zang Jianhe formulated the dumpling wrappers and fillings into an exclusive secret recipe.
Zang Kin-wo's dumplings are very much in line with the tastes of Hong Kong people, and they are not only sold on the pier, but also ordered by high-end restaurants. The turning point in Zang Jianhe's life occurred one day in 1982, when a Japanese department store wanted to cooperate with Zang Jianhe.
It turned out that the owner of this company accidentally tasted Zang Jianhe's dumplings in a restaurant and thought that they were very delicious and could be greatly promoted.
Zang Jianhe told the Japanese businessman that he did not have a shop, only a small stall. So the Japanese proposed that they provide the equipment, Zang Jianhe and provide the technology, but the dumplings should use the Japanese trademark.
Hearing this request, Zang Jianhe refused directly without thinking about it. She believes that her own things are her own, and in doing so, she is undoubtedly deceiving customers.
When the Japanese relented, they agreed to use Zang's trademark and contact information, and a small vendor on the dock eventually convinced the shrewd merchants.
Zang Kin-wo's "Wan Chai Peking Dumplings" have since become a bestseller, and her first factory was established in Hong Kong soon after.
As the fame of Wan Chai Pier grew, many foreign businessmen came to Zang Jianhe for cooperation, which also made Zang Jianhe accumulate more and more wealth.
A business legend
She has gone from a single mother to a strong woman with more than a billion assets in a few years. In addition to frozen dumplings, Zang Jianhe has also developed different frozen products with the factory.
Many of the frozen products developed by her are unprecedented in the market, and many people in Hong Kong know the Wan Chai Ferry brand.
Wan Chai Ferry Terminal has 30% of the frozen dumpling market and 20% of the fresh dumpling market in Hong Kong, which already accounts for half of the dumpling market in Hong Kong.
In 1997, Pinshile, the largest frozen food company in the United States, came to Zang Jianhe for cooperation, and they were very interested in Zang Jianhe's dumpling products and a series of frozen foods with Chinese characteristics.
So the two sides reached a cooperation, because Zang Jianhe's company's cold chain technology is still relatively backward, in order to better development, so 70% of the equity was ceded to American businessmen.
After occupying the equity, the American refrigeration company worked harder to promote the development of Wan Chai Wharf, and under the joint efforts of the two companies, Wan Chai Wharf quickly established modern frozen food factories in Shanghai, Guangzhou and other big cities.
Although the company is getting bigger and bigger, Zang Jianhe has never forgotten her original intention, and she has been pursuing better quality.
Sometimes customers eat problems from the products, Zang Jianhe will personally apologize and compensate the customers, and go deep into the factory to improve the problems with the workers. And she has a good relationship with the workers, and she doesn't have any boss shelves.
Zang Jianhe once said:
I can't forget the help I received from well-wishers when I was in trouble, at that time I was very envious of the people who had the ability to help others, and now that I have the ability, I will help more people.
She truly fulfilled her promise by donating 1 million RMB to the Qingdao Charity Association and building a public welfare nursing home in her mother's name.
Zang Jianhe said that this is what he should do. Today, Wan Chai Pier has become an international brand, and in 2006, Zang Jianhe won the World Outstanding Chinese Award.
At the conference, she was the first outstanding female entrepreneur to speak in Chinese. In 2019, Zang Jianhe, a legendary business woman in her life, passed away at the age of 73.
Founded by Zang Jianhe, the Wan Chai Ferry Pier brand has become a very representative cultural symbol. It has made more foreigners taste the delicious taste of Chinese dumplings, and it has also made this time-honored food carry forward all over the world!
