Christmas Eve Killing Night Series: A Review of the Pros and Cons of Six Films

The Christmas Eve Killing Eve series of movies has attracted many audiences with its unique "Santa Claus Killer" setting, and six works have been launched so far. However, not every one of them is evocative. In reality, the series is not as horrific as critics and moral defenders fear, and not every installment is a masterpiece.

Unlike the 1974 classic Black Christmas, this film doesn't stand out in the genre. Aside from the pre-release controversy, it seems to lack special attention. Although the first film attempts to incorporate a discussion of Catholic guilt and childhood trauma within the framework of a standard killing film, the content is slightly exploitative, leaving the characters with a lack of depth.

However, "Killing Eve on Christmas Eve 2" became a classic, thanks to the casual humorous moments in it. However, the next three sequels gradually deviated from the original setting. Here is a ranking of the Killings on Christmas Eve series movies from worst to best.

6. "Killing Eve on Christmas Eve 5: Toy Maker"

The film borrowed from the popular fantasy genre killing films of the time, such as "The Return of the Ghost Baby", "Candyman" and "Ghost Street". The story revolves around Joe Peto, a toymaker who creates a variety of murderous toys to take bloody revenge on bad boys. Joe, played by Mitch Rooney, is obnoxious and unattractive, making this sequel a failure in the series and the worst of many Haunted Street copycats.

5. "Killing Eve on Christmas Eve 3: You Better Be Careful"

This production, directed by Monte Herrmann, proves that not all genre films can benefit from the creativity of a unique director. Herman's slow pace and dreamy atmosphere don't add highlights to this banal sequel, but instead are reminiscent of a dull David Lynch movie. Lacking both the humor of the second installment and the innovative killings of the first, Killing Eve 3 is not only the worst in the series, but also the worse of the two Christmas horror movies of the same name.

4.《平安夜惊魂》(2012)

This 2012 remake feels like a simpler and more straightforward film, leaving behind the tragic setting of the original and straight to Santa's killing spree. While there is a brutal villain character, overall, as a horror film, it lacks surprise and depth. Still, it's a funny, insanely bloody comedy-horror film.

3. "Christmas Eve Killing Eve 4: Activation"

The outliers in this film series are just hanging the series name. Directed by legendary director of the body horror genre Brian Yuzner, Silent Eve Killings Night 4 is heavily influenced by David Cronenberg and tells the story of a journalist who is caught up in a world of insect-mediated body horror while investigating an all-female cult. Despite having nothing to do with Christmas and Santa Claus, the film creates a disturbingly nightmarish atmosphere. However, it has little to nothing to do with the series name.

2. "Christmas Eve Killing Night"

The film falls into a similar predicament to Halloween, Drill Killer or Maniac. "Killing Night on Christmas Eve" is too vulgar to give pure pleasure, and at the same time not enough to be a truly wonderful, filthy midnight movie.

All in all, the Silent Eve Killing Night series isn't all as good as one might expect. While there are some highlights, there are also quite a few disappointments. I hope that in the future, this series can rediscover its original intention and bring more surprises to the audience.
