Hengshui was the domain of the Yan and Zhao states during the Warring States period, and after Qin Shi Huang unified the Six Kingdoms, Hengshui was named Julu County, and during the Han Dynasty Hengshui belonged to the Assassin History Department of Jizhou, and successively established the State of Guangzhou, the State of Xindu and the State of Anping in Hengshui.

During the Three Kingdoms period, it was the territory of the State of Wei and Ji prefectures, which were transferred to xindu from the beginning of Yi, and the territory was divided into the three counties of Anping, Boling, and Bohai. The Jin Dynasty was still under the jurisdiction of Jizhou. During the Sui Dynasty, the southern part belonged to Ji Prefecture, and the northern part belonged to Shen Prefecture, which was established in 596 AD.

Different history of Hengshui

In the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Hebei Province, in the early Song Dynasty, Jizhou belonged to Hebei East Road, and Shenzhou belonged to Hebei West Road. At the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, the guanzhou administrative office was moved to the county seat, and in 1265 it was renamed Jingzhou.

After that, until the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was successively under the jurisdiction of Zhongshu Province, Jingshi Province, and Directly Subordinate Provinces, and the territory was still divided by the three prefectures of Ji, Shenzhen, and Jing. In the early days of the Republic of China, all states were changed to counties and directly subordinate to provinces.

Until 1914, the present district was divided into Daming Province, Baoding Province, and Jinhai Province. In 1928, the province was renamed Hebei Province, and at the same time, the province was abolished, and the counties were directly subordinate to the province.

Different history of Hengshui

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1937, the present district was divided into the Jizhong District of the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Ji'nan District of the Jin-Ji-Ji Luyu Border Region.

In May 1948, the two border regions were merged and renamed as the North China Administrative Region, and on August 1, 1949, Hengshui Special District was established, which had jurisdiction over some counties of the former Ji'nan and Jizhong districts.

Including Hengshui, Jixian, Zaoqiang, Wuyi, Shenxian, Wuqiang, Qinghe, Enxian, Xiajin, Wucheng, Gucheng, Jingxian, Fucheng and other 13 counties, belongs to the newly established Hebei Province.

On November 7, 1952, Hengshui Prefecture was abolished by order of the North China Administrative Committee, and the three counties of Xiajin, Enxian and Wucheng under its jurisdiction were assigned to Shandong Province, and the six counties of Hengshui, Shenxian, Wuqiang, Wuyi, Zaoqiang and Jixian were assigned to Shijiazhuang Prefecture.

The three counties of Jingxian, Gucheng and Fucheng are assigned to Cangxian Special District, and Qinghe County is assigned to Xingtai Special District. On June 27, 1962, the State Council approved the restoration of hengshui special area.

It administers 11 counties including Hengshui, Jixian, Zaoqiang, Wuyi, Shenxian, Wuqiang, Raoyang, Anping, Gucheng, Jingxian and Fucheng. In 1970, Hengshui Special District was renamed Hengshui District.

In January 1982, Hengshui Town was upgraded to Hengshui City. In September 1993, Jixian Was reorganized into Jizhou City. In July 1994, Shen County was rebuilt into Shenzhou City.

On May 31, 1996, the State Council approved the abolition of Hengshui District and the establishment of Hengshui City at the prefecture level, and at the same time abolished the former county-level Hengshui City and replaced it with Taocheng District. By the end of 2000, Hengshui city had jurisdiction over 1 district, 8 counties and 2 county-level cities.
