The story of Hu Shining, a Qing official five hundred years ago

In the eighth year of Ming Jiajing (1529), Hu Shining, the prince of Zuo Du Yushijia, resigned his official post and returned to his hometown. Because of his outstanding political achievements over the years and his honesty as an official, the emperor gave him many rewards before his departure. Hu Shining tried his best to resign, proposing that it would be better to fold rice with silver to save the people in their hometown from the burden of buying rice hundreds of miles away to pay for grain. The emperor, grateful for his love for the people, immediately agreed and instructed the local government to handle it. The local people were very grateful and passed on the story of his incorruptibility as an official and the benefit of Sangzi from generation to generation.

Hu Shining, also known as Yongqing, a native of Renhe Hengtang, Zhejiang (in present-day Shangcheng District, Hangzhou), served as the Right Attendant of the Bureaucracy, the Left Attendant of the Bingbu, and the Shangshu of the Ministry of Works. Throughout his life, he had a clean and honest society, indifferent to fame and fortune, and was praised by posterity as a "loyal carp".

He is not afraid of the powerful and powerful, and he is just and upright. In the eighth year of Hongzhi (1495), soon after Hu Shining entered the official field, he served as an official in De'an Province, responsible for handling the matter of prison. It was also in this year that Emperor Mingxianzong's fifth son, Zhu Youzong,Đại (朱祐棆) was made king and given the title of Emperor De'an of the Domain. Zhu Youzun's family, believing themselves as emperors, robbed and robbed innocents, and made the people miserable. The case reached Hu Shining, who was not afraid to threaten to take the perpetrator into custody. At the trial, Zhu Youtong actually came to the scene to put pressure on Hu Shining, but Hu Shining did not give in, but adhered to principles, enforced the law impartially, and severely punished the parties according to law. In the face of Zhu Youzun's on-the-spot rebuke, Hu Shining righteously and sternly stated that the laws of the imperial court are also the family law of His Highness, so how can His Highness not take the lead in observing them? The people who have been violated by the royal palace are the foundation for the continuation of the country, so how can officials at all levels not be sympathetic? Zhu Youzun knew that he was wrong and was speechless. Since then, Zhu Youzun's family behavior has relented, and he no longer dares to be as unscrupulous as before.

Hu Shining is not greedy for wealth and wealth, nor does he seek to make a false name. In the sixteenth year of Zhengde (1521), Tang Fengyi, a subordinate of Hu Shining, was ordered to tour Zhejiang and proposed to build a torii for him in Hu Shining's hometown. Hu Shining flatly refused, saying that there were many sages there, such as Chu Suiliang, Xiang Lin and others, they were all accomplished officials, their own examples, and if they wanted to build archways, they should also be built. After Tang Fengyi arrived in Hangzhou, she saw that Hu Shining's family had only three bungalows, and because of its disrepair, the decadent walls were in danger and dilapidated, she deeply felt that he was honest and honest, public and selfless, and even more admired. Hu Shining does not care about his own fame and fortune, but he is meticulous in his national interests. In the first year of Jiajing (1522), Hu Shining was promoted to the position of official attendant, and the imperial court planned to increase his salary, and he even recited the chapter, "The state is always limited in endowment, and the funds are infinite... If a subject is promoted to the first rank, he can raise more than thirteen stones of rice per month, and he can support thirteen poor border warriors, and one hundred and fifty-six stones a year..." In his opinion, the imperial court should be used where it is more needed.

Hu Shining is a man of pure spirits and a model for future generations. When he was young, Hu Shining's family was poor, he could only weave and sell shoes during the day, pick up lights at night and read hard, and finally got good results after years of hard study. According to volume 28 of the "Records of the Emperor and Ming Dynasty", Hu Shining's forty years of career has always been "served and eaten, and Yu Sushi is also", and after his death, "there is no accumulation of reserves in the family, and there is no surplus of millet". Hu Shining established himself with honesty and strictly governed the family. There is such a record in the Hu family tree: In those days, the clan members were poor and loved the rich, and the customs were corrupt. Hu Shining leads by example and takes the lead in setting an example, respecting the elderly as fathers and brothers, loving the young as children, and advising the clansmen to sympathize with each other in the event of marriage and funeral or poverty; those who have bad words and deeds that affect the reputation of the family, or bully their parents and infringe on their relatives, they must be admonished and punished; if they do not obey the family rules and family discipline, they are not descendants of the Hu clan. To this end, he also personally wrote the "Record of the Ancestral Tomb of the Hu Family", and erected a stele in front of the ancestral tomb of the ancestors.

In his hometown of Hangzhou, Hu Shining is famous and revered. Soon after his death, the people of his hometown built the "Yonghui Ancestral Hall" to show their nostalgia. In the Qing Dynasty's "Wulinfang Alley Chronicle", there is also a poem dedicated to Hu Shining: "The virtuous minister is not vain, and the heavens are auxiliary to the state; the world has martial arts, and the Qing Festival is more desirable." Today, there is also a statue of "Resignation to the Benedicts" in the Gaoting Xiaolian Cultural Park in Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, which tells his deeds to benefit the people and portrays his awe-inspiring image.
