In the long history of military history, there are many battles that have become hot topics in people's hearts because of their tragedy and cruelty. In late May 1985, a battle between China and Vietnam in the Lao Son area still leaves a deep imprint on people's memories even as time passes. It was a life-and-death struggle that took place on the 211 Heights, a fierce battle that pushed the soldiers and generals to a desperate situation.

The Lao Son area was once one of the battlefields of the war between the Chinese and Vietnamese armies. In this land, the 211 Heights became synonymous with a bloody battle. On May 21, 1985, the 67th Regiment of the 199th Division of the 595th Army took over this position from the 1st Army and became the most forward position in the Nala direction. However, this seemingly inconspicuous place was turned into a "large meat grinder" in the later battles.

On May 31, the Vietnamese army took advantage of the unstable change of defense of the 67th Army and launched a battalion-scale counterattack, codenamed "M1T5". The 67th Army, which won the first battle, unexpectedly lost the 211 heights, making this position the focus of fierce fighting between the two armies. Under the careful planning of the 322nd Division of the Vietnamese Army, the attack on the 211 heights became their priority task.

The Vietnamese army's reconnaissance of Heights 211 was very detailed, and they found 10 cat's ear holes on the heights, each of which was estimated to contain 3-6 Chinese soldiers. The Vietnamese army fully understood the garrison situation of the People's Liberation Army and thus formulated a sophisticated battle plan. They divided their troops into three routes, with the southeast as the main direction of attack and the southwest and northwest directions as auxiliaries, intending to break through from the southeast and clear the PLA in the cat's ear hole one by one.

In the fierce battle, the 5th company of the Vietnamese army captured the 211 heights, resulting in the death of more than 20 PLA people and the capture of 1 person. The Vietnamese army used this victory to make a big deal of publicity in Hanoi in an attempt to influence the morale of our troops. However, the top brass of our army quickly took measures not to listen to the radio in order to avoid being affected by the enemy's situation.

The defeat on the 211 heights made our army feel defeated, so they blindly and brutally tried to recover the lost territory without adequate preparation. In the 11 days from June 1 to June 11, our troops carried out several attacks on the 211 position, trying to regain lost territory. However, this reckless battle led to the casualties of hundreds of young soldiers of the 595th Regiment of our army, and the situation became even more serious.

After several efforts failed to recapture the 211 heights, the 199th Division of the 67th Army launched another offensive on June 11 in an attempt to turn the tide. However, the battle turned out to be extremely fierce, with the Vietnamese army launching 98 counterattacks on the 211 heights, plus 120 sneak attacks, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

In the bloody battle on the 211 heights, the sacrifices of our troops cannot be expressed in words. However, after 44 days of fighting, our army successfully recaptured the 211 heights on September 8 through hard work. It was a protracted battle, and every inch of the land was stained red with blood.

The bloody battle of the 211 Heights was a tragic battle in the history of the Chinese army. Soldiers fought bravely in that area the size of a basketball court, and countless lives have written eternal magnificence on this land for the country and faith. The 44 days of bloody fighting are the best commemoration of those fearless soldiers, and it is also a profound reflection on the cruelty of war.

This history, although cruel, is also worth remembering. In times of peace, we should cherish the tranquility in front of us and remember the heroes who gave their lives for peace. At the same time, we should deeply reflect on the horror of war and strive to make peace our common choice. I would like to pay high tribute to those comrades-in-arms who fought bloodily in the 211 Heights, and may the flowers of peace always bloom. [Continue Reading]

The smoke of war, the years are sinking. At the end of May 1985, a tragic battle took place in the Laoshan area, pushing the soldiers to a desperate situation, and that battle took place on the 211 Heights, a land of blood and fire.

The Laoshan area has gone through vicissitudes, and the 211 highlands have become the focus of this battlefield. On May 21, the 595th Regiment of the 199th Division of the 67th Army took over this area from the 1st Army, never thinking that this position would become the focus of the fierce battle between the two armies, and the 211 Heights became synonymous with "meat grinder".

On May 31, 1985, the Vietnamese army took advantage of the unstable change of defense of our army and launched a counterattack plan codenamed "M1T5". Although our army won the first battle and successfully withstood the counterattack of the Vietnamese army, it unexpectedly lost the 211 heights. In this position, the Nanjing Military Region once conquered the three outposts entrenched by the Vietnamese army when it was stationed in Laoshan, and numbered it as the "211 position".

The Vietnamese army is well aware of the situation on the 211 heights, and detailed reconnaissance shows that our army has deployed 10 cat's ear holes, each of which is estimated to have 3-6 PLA soldiers. As a result, the Vietnamese army formulated a series of plans, mainly in the southeast direction, supplemented by the southwest and northwest directions, in an attempt to break through from the southeast and sweep the PLA in the cat's ear hole one by one.

In the fierce battle, the 5th company of the Vietnamese army successfully captured the 211 heights, our army lost more than 20 people, and 1 person was captured. Seizing this opportunity, the Vietnamese army quickly held a news conference in Hanoi to trumpet the Vietnamese army's "war results" in an attempt to shake the morale of our army. However, the top brass of our army took urgent measures to prohibit soldiers from listening to the radio in order to ensure that the morale of the army was not fluctuated.

The defeat on the 211 Heights made our army feel frustrated, so in the case of insufficient preparation, the army commander Zhang Zhijian ordered the 199th Division to recapture the No. 1 and No. 2 posts on the 211 Heights at all costs. However, in the 11 days from June 1 to June 11, our troops launched several attacks on the 211 position in an attempt to regain the lost ground. This reckless battle led to the casualties of hundreds of young fighters of the 595 regiment of our army, and the situation became even more serious.
