IT Home reported on December 27 that SpaceX recently tweeted, saying that the Falcon 9 booster B1058 left us forever during the transportation of the last mission.

SpaceX said the booster B1058 returned to the Just Read the Instructions (JRTI) deck, less than 100 miles from Port Naviral, after completing its launch mission on Dec. 23, though the B1058 fell into the sea due to high winds and waves.

SpaceX says the booster B1058 has been in service for 3.5 years, during which time it has successfully launched more than 860 satellites or more than 260 tons of cargo into orbit, and successfully completed its 19th reuse mission on December 23, 2023.

SpaceX 发射副总裁 Kiko Dontchev 解释道:

The booster B1058 experienced an uneven load on the "legs" during landing, while high winds or sea conditions caused the pusher to crumble.

In this state, protecting with Octagrabber is challenging and cannot be guaranteed to be completely successful.

The B1069 had a similar situation two years ago on Christmas, but the booster had an auto-leveling setting that instantly equalized the leg load on landing.

The booster B1058 was not equipped with this set, so it ended its life 100 miles from the door of "home" in the event of strong winds and waves.

This is the first ever "19-handed" Falcon 9 rocket, with a refurbished launch period of about 50 days, the first mission was on May 31, 2020, and has previously flown the Crew Demo-2 mission, ANASIS-11 mission, CRS-21 mission, Transporter-1 mission, Transporter-3 mission, and 13 Starlink launch missions.
