The rise of Chinese brands in the new energy era has brought unprecedented happiness and self-confidence to domestic consumers, and after the success of "corner overtaking", buyers who once flocked to joint venture brands and imported brands have switched to the arms of domestic brands, and there is even an argument on the Internet that "electric vehicles made by traditional foreign brands are miscellaneous cars".

It is true that under the extreme involution of a number of Chinese brands, the advantages of traditional joint venture brands and imported brands in terms of intelligence, localization and cost performance have been quickly wiped out and surpassed, but are the products created by these brands with many years of car-making heritage really useless in this new era?

At least in terms of battery life, it's really not.

Recently, the authoritative evaluation agency "Consumer Reports" released a test for the real range of electric vehicles VS nominal range, which covers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Tesla and other brands of various price level models, through high-speed range tests to find out those models with serious "false standards".

And the test results they released are indeed surprising, as many as 10 of the 22 electric vehicles tested this time cannot reach the officially declared EPA operating range.

The worst performer was Ford's F-150 Lightning electric pickup, which has an official nominal range of 320 miles (515 km), but a measured true range of only 270 miles (434 km). Although as a pickup truck, it certainly has no advantage in terms of energy consumption, but under extremely strict EPA conditions, there is a range discount of up to 15%, which is still unexpected by many people.

The performance of the Ford Electric Mach-E four-wheel drive long-range version, which is also a Ford brand, is quite good, with an official nominal range of 270 miles (434km), and it has achieved a measured range of 299 miles (481km), which is 10.7% more than the nominal one.

However, when it comes to "reverse false standards", the strongest are the two luxury brands Mercedes-Benz and BMW. A total of six models from the two brands have been tested this time, and all six models have achieved higher range than the official claim.

The most exaggerated of these was the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 4Matic, which ran 332 miles (534 km) at the official nominal 260 miles (418 km), which was 27.7% higher than the nominal time!

And EQE SUV, EQS, EQS SUV have also achieved a lot higher than the official nominal endurance results, although I have experienced the Mercedes-Benz EQ series many times in China before I knew that the high-speed endurance of Mercedes-Benz pure electric models is very strong, but such exaggerated data still surprised me.

Similarly, the performance of the two models tested by BMW, the i4 M50 and the iX xDrive50, was also quite impressive. The i4, with an official nominal range of 271 miles (436 km), ended up running 318 miles (511 km), while the iX, with an official nominal range of 324 miles (521 km), ran a range of 370 miles (595 km).

You must know that whether it is Mercedes-Benz's four mid-to-high-end models in the EQ series or BMW's two new forces in the i series, the sales in the Chinese market are not sluggish, and the discounts are even more exaggerated than the other. For example, the guide price of the iX xDrive50 in the Chinese market starts at 846,900 yuan, but the current terminal price can be within 600,000 yuan, and the price of the more entry-level "40" version starts at 746,900 yuan, and the price can even reach around 450,000 yuan, which is close to the level of six folds.

In addition to Mercedes-Benz BMW, models such as Volkswagen's ID.4 four-wheel drive version, Genesis GV60, Hyundai IONIQ5, Kia EV6 and other models have also surpassed the EPA's official range, but these models are selling worse than one in China.

On the contrary, the Tesla Model S, as a representative of advanced electric vehicles, only ran 366 miles (589km) when the official nominal range was 405 miles (651km), and the Lucid Air, which is also a "new force in American car manufacturing", also had a measured range of 40 miles lower than the official one. However, not all traditional car companies have achieved good performance in this test, such as:

For example, the nominal range of the EQE SUV in China is 613km, but the nominal range in the United States is only 407km, and the main reason is that there is a huge difference in the range test methods between China and the United States.

Different from the CLTC battery life we commonly use, the US market adopts the EPA standard working condition endurance, which is not only far stricter than the CLTC, but even more stringent than the real usage scenarios of many people. The general process can be divided into four steps:

1. Fully charge the vehicle and let it sit overnight.

2. Place the vehicle on the bench for testing, in addition to the traditional city/high-speed two major working conditions, the EPA also adds two major scenarios: "intense driving conditions" and "air conditioning use conditions", and a rough range data can be obtained after the battery runs out.

3. Re-charge the vehicle, record the charged power and the loss during the charging process, so as to obtain the equivalent fuel consumption value.

4. On the basis of the measured endurance results, add wind resistance or other influence factors to obtain a "discounted" data, which is the final EPA operating endurance.

As an unofficial organization, Consumer Reports uses even more rigorous testing methods than the official tests in order to produce a more realistic range data than the EPA. According to the test procedures published by them, the participating vehicles are all "quasi-new cars" with a mileage of less than 2,000-15,000 miles, which not only ensures the condition of the vehicles, but also ensures that each vehicle has been fully run-in.

The test process is also quite rigorous, each car will be prepared in accordance with official requirements, including tires, tire pressure will be set at the standard value, and the test environment is selected at a temperature of 21-32 degrees, the air conditioning temperature will also be fixed at 22 degrees, and each car will be set at a speed of 70 miles (112km) / hour cruise control, turn on the energy-saving mode / kinetic energy recovery to the minimum. In the event of a significant fluctuation in the average speed due to traffic jams, the car will be directly retested.

Therefore, under such strict true and pure high-speed test conditions, it also means that those models that can achieve better results than EPA operating conditions do have certain strength in high-speed energy consumption.

It just so happened that some time ago in China, Li Bin, chairman of Weilai, personally drove a Weilai ET7 equipped with a 150-degree battery pack, and carried out a high-speed 1000km endurance challenge, although the final challenge was successful, but because it drove at a speed of 90km/h for a long time at high speed, many netizens complained about the lack of reference value in this test, and it also aroused heated discussions about high-speed endurance and vehicle speed.

In fact, this also reflects the anxiety of many potential buyers of electric vehicles about high-speed range, in terms of range testing, countries have different road conditions and national conditions, although we cannot copy the US EPA standards. However, since the CLTC standard working conditions have a bad and untrue reputation among consumers, the relevant departments and even car companies may start to consider promoting stricter and closer to the actual battery life test standards.

What I'm more curious about is that if there is really an updated range test standard in the future, will these joint venture/imported brand electric vehicles that are now "spurned" by consumers have a chance to win back a city for themselves in terms of solid battery life, and recapture those buyers who are particularly anxious about battery life?
