When the Kangxi Emperor died in 1722, the dramatic events of the Nine Sons began to unfold. Lao Si Yinxi and his supporters tried to compete for the throne, believing that he should be the rightful heir.

At the same time, the mothers of Lao Ba Yinyu and Lao Jiu Yinyu, as well as their supporters, also took active action, hoping to make one of them the new emperor. Emperor Yongzheng's mother, Concubine Yi, also participated in the battle.

Yongzheng hoped to use reforms to strengthen the centralization of power, improve the efficiency of the government, and weaken the power of the Manchurian aristocracy. He may have thought that choosing his heir rather than the eldest son, predestined by the Kangxi Emperor, would help him achieve his political goals.
